Peak Season (2023)
Beautiful and subtle
A clear case of less is more. It was like watching real life taking place, with conversations where silence is equally important to words. This is how real life goes, you have ideas and expectations and sometimes it disappoints, or people disappoint, and then again, nobody's perfect and at the same time they are. The actors are completely natural, so genuinely laid-back with each other. And the dog. Props to Dorothy.
I loved this movie, with it's subtleness, softness, kindness, and beautiful scenery. What a backdrop for this story. Would actually love to see it again. Deserves all the credit it receives!
Perfect Days (2023)
Perfect in its simplicity
Being from a country (The Netherlands) where public toilets are few, and hugely undervalued, I truly fell in love with this film, and with its protagonist Hirayama, played excellently by Koji Yakusho. Now I want to re-see Tampopo and every other film he's been in. I fell for Wim Wenders' work with Paris, Texas, back in the days, and his films keep amazing me.
Perfect Days is perfect in its simplicity. The amount of spoken words is... maybe 20? 50? Hirayama seems to only want to speak when it is absolutely necessary, an example many others should follow, haha. He lives his perfect routine, but when disturbed it brings emotions to the surface. We get a glimpse of his (past) life through interactions in the present.
I loved it. A big thank you to the crew.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Very, very poor adapation of a great book
Good heavens, what a shambles. They don't actually set foot on the boat for almost an hour. During that time, all motives have been carefully laid out and Kenneth Brannagh has even found the time for an in-depth exploration of the birth of Poirot's moustache. Can't think why though. I knew from the first shot o Brannagh as Poirot himself that this would all be about him.
Clearly Brannagh deeply underestimates his audience, giving us clues complete with signposts. Loved some of the cast though, although Russell Brand should have been given an extra chance to shout without the cockney accent.
The only good thing is Agatha Christie wasn't alive to see her work vandalised.
Samsara (2023)
Stunning
This is a gem! Unlike anything I've ever seen before. Saw this at IDFA, the documentary festival in Amsterdam, though it's not your usual type of documentary is it.
I was really looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint. Beautiful imagery from Laos and such a gentle pace in storytelling. And then, halfway through, the most wonderful experience in a cinema I've ever encountered. And then we're in Zanzibar.
Felt really fantastic to be enjoying this with my fellow movie goers. I plan to remember all the wise words and lessons this beautiful film holds.
Hope to maybe see it sometime again.
Petite maman (2021)
Unexpected!
This movie took a turn I hadn't expected. So interesting! A sweet story, very gentle. Really stands out from other stories. Loved it.
A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
Loved this!
A classic Woody Allen, loved this all the way. It has al the familiar ingredients: New York in the rain, a neurotic young man, openly struggling with his thoughts and love life, the pretty young girl, the object of his affection.
Some of Allen's recent work has been rather lightweight, but here is is in true form again.
Safe (2018)
American actor with English accent.. bad choice
I was riveted to see Michael C Hall again! Big blow to hear him speak with an English accent though. Made it all very theatrical and unbelievable.
The premise of the story was okay, but they took it too far. Like someone wrote, the only thing missing was aliens. At times it would have been good as a satirical comedy.
So sorry, but huge waste of time.
