You Can't Kill Meme (2021)
Delusional, chaotic, and...hilarious?
The movie itself sucks, but the absolute insanity of the interviews could make for a funny watch. The editing of degraded jpegs, seemingly random found footage, and awkward camera angles screams amateur, yet it really has me wondering if the director believes in this chaos magick, willing reality into existence, poltergeists, WitchTok, and other wacky ideologies. The rabbit hole gets deeper and deeper with each new interview. The director really blurred the lines if these are trolls or real people who believe in this, and even more so for her actual belief. But whether she is exploiting these looneys, or if they are actually actors, or if the director has completely immersed herself into this world of madness, it's a unique video that will leave you questioning the sanity of this world and the people on it.
Maybe one day we will actually see "Level 1".
Dokyumentaru (2016)
Great concept, decent execution
Documental thrives on it's strong premise of comedians trying to not laugh at each other, but gets less funny as each season lingers on.
The psychology behind the show is quite fascinating. Some go the deadpan strait man route, some absurdist, some self-deprecating-there isn't one way to win. It's pretty apparent when a competitor is "trying too hard" to get a laugh, which is why many of the predictable props & costumes bomb hard in the later rounds.
Overall, there's some funny moments and you're likely to have a couple favorite comedians that you are rooting for by the time that it's over.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Everybody talks in analogies...?
As a whole, The Gentlemen was very distracting and odd. The dialog was completely loaded with metaphors and zingers, the editing (and random use of b roll) was jarring and over-stylized, there was no character growth, the meta screenplay insert didn't add to the story at all, to name a few. The tone was intended to be fun, but there was hardly any room for that (aside from the on-foot chase scene, the gym guys' battle video, and Hugh Grant's quirkiness). The dramatic moments could of been a little more tense, but not a single one of the villains posed any sort of threat to the protagonists. The good guys kind of steam rolled through the turncoats and rival dealers. Everything worked out and it was super easy for them, which might be a first for a crime movie.
The casting in the movie was excellent, but the character's motivations were so clean cut and obvious that the sense of mystery was essentially absent. The directing and acting shined. Yet, there was no momentum or character moments to really speak of; which, as a viewer, made the whole endeavor seem one-note.
Other noteworthy aspects were the cinematography and soundtrack. Nothing bad to say here.
I can see why lots of people would enjoy this movie, but I had a hard time getting into it.
Cats (2019)
I feel like I am going insane
Cats is incredibly surreal. It's barely a movie, I don't know what it is.
Now, don't get me wrong, it was hilarious. The wonky facial expressions, lingering songs, and downright creepy mannerisms were quite the hoot. Almost all of the audience was there to laugh at the movie. For good reason. There were two people in the theater who were taking it seriously (a young couple on a date. Oops, that's a poor choice of movies), but they turned around by the end of the "film" and started chuckling.
It's so strange how a piece of media like this can exist. Despite how unwatchable it is, the movie was weirdly hypnotizing. Well, I guess we are one with the jellicles now. Whatever that means.
