The Hour (2004)
Boooorrrriiiinnnnng
This show was so boring. I don't dislike George S. but the shows just seemed so pointless, uninteresting and useless. The jokes were always so lame. Sometimes there would be a decent guest but even then it was just so bland and tedious to watch.
Freddy Got Fingered (2001)
Garbage
This movie is just garbage. Just stupid, brainless garbage that's not even funny. They are trying so desperately to be funny with Tom Green playing with a horse's penis etc but it's just so desperate it's sad instead of funny. He's also the worst actor I've ever seen. Next time you write a movie try adding some jokes into it... then again you'll never get to make another movie after this most epic bomb of all time so never mind.
The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight (1971)
Fun
This is a fun and oddball comedy from the early seventies. Two gangs go to war and the smaller gang uses a lion to shake down people living in the other gang's territory. The police have to intervene and one of the gangs ends up without a boss. It's wacky, crazy fun even though it's not a great film by any means. It's strange to see a young Jerry Orbach (Law and Order) in this comedy.
The Littlest Hobo (1979)
All Time Canadian Classic
The Littlest Hobo was an amazing show! London the dog played the unnamed "Littlest Hobo", a dog who would roam from town to town and each episode befriend and help a different person or family. Some episodes were more basic things like helping a blind person be more independent or help reunite family members who were estranged, but the show especially in later years got much more out there with the dog stopping bank robberies and jumping through windows to rescue people from kidnappers, or dragging unconscious people from burning buildings. The theme song was top notch and every episode is sure to entertain!
You Bet Your Ass (2006)
Fun!
I thought this Canadian comedy game show was a lot of fun. Was it a good game show? Not really. It had easy questions and the host acted like he didn't really want to be there (he probably didn't). The contestants were usually kind of boring and sometimes even a little confused and the grand prize was something paltry like two thousand dollars or something and nobody ever even got that much... Stewart Francis was the host, he is a Canadian stand-up comic who is very funny and very well known. He would tell one-liner jokes and riff with the guests and they would never really get it which would lead to him giving more comments. His cohost is the girl from Little Mosque, who is attractive but not very funny and for some reason she's acting like an airhead high school girl in this. Anyway this show was kind of odd and definitely entertaining whether you liked it or not, I did.
Black Books (2000)
Very Funny
Dylan Moran is great and so is Tamsin Greig. Bill Bailey I get tired of sometimes but in this he is usually funny (when the story is not all about him). Sometimes the show would get a bit too far fetched and silly which kind of breaks with the usual real world aspects of the show but I thought almost every episode was just hilarious. Wish they'd have made more!
Working the Engels (2014)
Terrible
This was a terrible show and I was very happy when I found out it was not coming back. This was a real waste of Andrea Martin's time and obvious talent. She is a Canadian TV legend and she deserves much much better than this show with it's lack of comedy and awful direction and writing.
Workin' Moms (2017)
Terrible
I don't understand or like this show at all. It's not funny at all and not only that but I just don't get what they are even trying to do. What is supposed to be interesting or funny about this show? I think the actors are fine but the writing and idea are so terrible they just have nothing to work with. This show is a real head scratch maker. Hate it a lot.
Viva Variety (1997)
Hilarious!
This was one of my fave shows of all time. It was hilarious and great parody! She was so sexy and he was such a great parody TV host. The variety acts and music and dancing were always so entertaining and the show always made my sister and I laugh our guts out. I can't believe people barely remember this show now, so sad.
Video on Trial (2005)
Classic Much Music
This is the best show from the best era of Much Music. Video on Trial was such a simple show where they would have comedians watch and make fun of music videos but it was fantastic! First of all it had something Much Music was lacking and doesn't even really have at all any more and that is MUSIC VIDEOS. So you got to see them but not just that there would be great riffs going on through the videos. If they were funny they would make you laugh and if they were not funny they were over so fast it didn't really matter and then you at home could riff about how bad the riffing was, and make your own riffs about the music videos. This is one of my fave shows from back then and it was fun growing up watching it, my sister and I loved it and basically scheduled our lives around when this show was on so we could watch it and make a game out of it. Love and miss this show. Still very angry when they got rid of the good judges then really angry when they changed the format and basically flushed the toilet down the show for no reason but whatever it was amazing while it lasted! And in the words of Ron Sparks "Shawn Desmond Sucks!" haha.
Train 48 (2003)
One of the Worst
This is one of the worst Canadian comedy TV series ever produced. I just reviews The Toronto Show which I think had the same problem as this show. They were trying to make a TV show every single day but probably only had a very tiny Canadian budget so they could not do it or at least not do it well. This show had characters on a train into the city every morning and it was half improvised so that right there should tell you how bad this show was. The writing was the worst but the actors also could not pull it off. The characters were annoying and just plain dull. I can't believe it was on TV for more than a couple episodes but again I'm sure it helped that it was the same hour of TV every day that probably cost next to nothing to make.
The Toronto Show (2003)
Awful
This show was very cheap looking and on a very cheap looking network. It was the Toronto 1 Network then it became the Toronto Sun Network and basically Canada's version of the Fox News Network after it failed. This show was the anchor show for the network at first with a host and lots of sketches, comedy characters, dance and music guests, etc. It was trying to be something like SNL for Canada but was just way too cheap and suffered for lack of talent and writing. Too bad it maybe could have been better if it was not on every single night and they took their time more or maybe didn't have to spread their money so thin. Maybe they didn't have to pay the guests or something I don't know. Too bad because it was a good idea they just I believe didn't have the money to pull it off.
The Beaverton (2016)
Unfortunately It's Bad
I like the website The Beaverton but this show is so wooden and poorly written and poorly performed and just plain cheap looking and dull I just can't make myself watch any more of it. I gave it many chances. The laugh track they stuck in was like it was done on somebody's laptop while they ran on a treadmill at the gym. The jokes are bad then there were explosions of laughter than stopped all of a sudden. Maybe that was supposed to be part of the joke but what I saw was just plain bad. I would give it a 1 but I like the online Beaverton so much I will bump it up. The hosts are likable but they have nothing to work with here, just really bad jokes.
The All-Night Show (1980)
Classic
This was a classic late night bad movie show. It is not quite as good as MST3K but it came first! Nobody in the states knows about this show but it is a legend in Canada especially Toronto. Jim Carrey was on it too I think!
I would say it deserves more recognition for how outside the box this show was. The host was great (I really hope it is not true he erased all the tapes and they turn up someday). This show and Bizarre and This Movie Sucks and Hilarious House of Frightenstein are special to me because they were so low budget but also so awesome and Canadian. All-Night Show holds a special place in our hearts and I for one will not soon forget some great nights staying up to watch the wackiness unfold haha!
Storage Wars Canada (2013)
Stinks
Storage Wars Canada was the worst! I give it two stars just because I like the format so much. But the people in this show were such bad actors, and so boring and so obviously fake and performing scripted actions, I can't believe they actually let it go out over the airwaves. It actually ruins the other versions of the show for me because now I know all of them must be very fake it's just that the others bother to hide it better. Horrible performances, horrible writing, a horrible lack of effort all the way around here.
Steve Smith Playhouse (2004)
Not MST3K
This show was kind of like other shows that make fun of public domain movies but it is maybe the worst and cheapest example of it. Steve Smith (from Red Green fame) would play a bad old movie, like a 1950's Tarzan movie, and he would over dub the voices with his own voice to make it funny. The thing is him doing so many voices got pretty boring and the jokes weren't very funny. It was different than just playing the movies and riffing on them like MST3K and This Movie Sucks but not as good or funny. MST3K and This Movie Sucks! were both a lot better than this. But this was a good try and respect him for taking a chance on this format.
Starvival (2010)
Funny Stuff!
I really enjoyed this show. It was a good examination of people trying to be successful as artists/actors/models and who just need gigs in order to survive. She was funny and some of the projects she got up to and the weird people involved in them were so interesting. Funny stuff!
Stars on Trial (2005)
Loved It
Loved it. Great special. Stars on Trial was really funny. Basically a special episode of Video on Trial from back when that show was the best comedy show on Canadian TV. Start to finish laughs for me I'm still glad I have it on VHS... need to hook a VHS tape player up someday so I can convert this to my laptop.
Stars Gone Wild (2007)
Pales in Comparison to VOT
The reviews seem a tad harsh for this show. I know it is bad but one out of ten is literally the lowest possible review on this site (IMDB). I know that compared to Video on Trial this show was trash but that is true of pretty much every other show on Much Music because VOT was by far the best show ever aired on Much Music! Some shows were worse than this. Remember Love Court, Brain Fart? Even when they changed the format of VOT to be one host (still angry about that why on earth did they ruin their proven best show like that it makes no damn sense!) was also a terrible show compared to Video on Trial. So let's re-calibrate our hate on's here. This show is bad but not as bad as the 1/10 rating. It's not like this show killed anybody.
Space Riders: Division Earth (2014)
Fun!
I know this show is very strange and a lot of my friends (and partner) did not like it very much for how strange it was, but I liked it quite a bit. It was funny in that bizarre kind of way and definitely it was different than a lot of other shows on TV. It was good short content that made me smile and even laugh out loud sometimes. If you like strange stuff it is worth checking out if you can find it, it is online.
Sons of Butcher (2005)
Average Teletoon Show
Sons of Butcher was not great but it wasn't a bad way to waste a half hour either. It was never hilarious but some of the jokes were actually funny. Didn't love the animation or voice work and it never really got better than an average 5/10 show but certainly a lot better than a lot of other Canadian shows on Teletoon.
Son of Zorn (2016)
Love It!
This show was hilarious! Great voice work and it was really canceled too soon, I loved Cheryl Hines, the voice of Zorn and Hines's new boyfriend in this, they were hilarious.
Stick Around (1977)
A Kaufman Joke?
Is this an Andy Kaufman joke on the audience or a real series? It is supposedly a TV pilot from the seventies about a couple who have an "old" robot that breaks down all the time. This is Kaufman and the show is set in 2055 and has a lot of jokes about present day 1970s. The male of the couple wants to sell Andy because he breaks down all the time and drops trays of dishes etc. Also he runs an antique store that has stuff from the seventies in it and he's wrong about what all the stuff is used for etc. He thinks a toilet is art, stuff like that. Also Andy works with him at the store polishing ladders and wrapping customers' purchases etc very poorly, so it makes no sense why he would have this robot with him at work let alone at home where he also just breaks stuff and makes snarky comments. They get a new robot and put Andy up for sale, yada yada the show makes no sense and has the worst theme song in the history of TV.
Melvin and Howard (1980)
Very Entertaining
I had never heard of Melvin and Howard before, but it was airing on TV here a few nights ago so I checked it out in bed, thinking I'd just fall asleep to it, but I ended up liking it too much. I looked it up here because I'm still thinking about how much I enjoyed it and am surprised to see it won so many awards. It must be one of those movies that was very good but just kind of slipped through the cracks. Mary Steenburgen is awesome in this movie and really deserved her award. It's just a very funny but also touching and dramatic movie about a guy who seems to inherit a huge fortune from an incredibly rich but eccentric man, only to have his claims challenged.
