Raising Dion (2019)
Fresh, Fierce and plentiful
Amazing, Beautiful and Genius. Originality with deep routes of cultural, social, economical and sheer human obstacle. Adulting is never easy, nor is childhood this comes together with great integrity. Visually flawless, with decent tempo, structure and story arc fulfillment. We could knit pick at the little things, but why bother when you can sit back and enjoy. Waiting for Netflix to approve season 2 of this binge worthy delight.
Another Life (2019)
It's a grower
It begun quite weak but strengthened as it grew through the series. I saw one critic write that it seemed like all onboard were mentally ill?! Well isn't everyone who wants to travel into space leaving all that is safe and known behind them. We instantly assume it's based in our universe, it is, at least, where it echoes similar eventual disaster as does our own. This a universe that contains an Earth like ours 100 years from now or so, maybe even less if we continue the way we are. Why would the world leaders send their brightest into space? If it turns out, which it often does like Event Horizon to name one, a one way trip. The brighest would stay on Earth hypothesising the next best move to make, so it sends simply a bright and capable crew, who have all graduated in interstellar travel, with various degrees in various niches of course. It follows the scifi/horror genre and plays by the rules of such a piece. The CGI and set will always be criticized, but then again wasn't the remaking of several Disney hit movies?! SciFi is rare we excuse the roughness it is after all in most trekki's imaginations that carry the story forward in our hearts and minds. The acting is good, the storyline evolves and the characters have arcs, the cinematography is good and it has a nice finish. Could we use more semiotics? Maybe. Could it use a little more mise en scene? Perhaps. And does it feel like some times the non SciFi fans are spoon fed just for Netflix rating? I'll leave that for you to answer yourself. All in all this deserves a better rating than previously given.
