King Kong (2005)
Chest beating in style
There were very few things about this movie that i did not like. It was spectacular to the last and had the larger than life feeling about it which just cannot be missed.
Though i didn't quiet appreciate Peter Jackson's efforts in the LOTR series (serious JRRT fan, sorry, changes in the story not appreciated) I still felt it made an awesome movie which reached an epic scale. As a movie The LOTR series was not bad but i wanted to see what Peter Jackson could do with a 25 foot Gorrila. Could he be as exciting as the reviews claimed? But this was one time i came out of the hall with a smile of satisfaction on my face saying that i definitely got my money's worth.
The Giant Silverback is everything you want him to be and more. He is scary, kicks some serious monster behind and rules with a majesty that is reminiscent of some great but fearsome conquerer.
Ann Darrow's role played by Naoimi Watts is done just right without too much drama or going over the top romance with the monkey. OK so she likes him but he is still a giant gorilla. Adrian Brody is in this movie also. One can expect nothing but great acting from this man and he delivers. The surprise package as has been said over and over again is Jack Black. He seems little like the fake sub teacher from School of Rock. He manages to do a good job but has his weak moments when he just decides to do what he likes. He is funny even in a grave situation. I suppose its just the way he is. Colin Hanks makes a decent appearance in this movie. Not much for him to do but what there is he doesn't mess it up. What i appreciate most about this movie though is Andy Serkis and the CGI team. He seems to have done some real magic with the gorilla and actually needs no words to communicate what he has to say and the CGI team has done what it needs to do to make the emotions come alive.
OK so the movie was long and well it could have been edited a lot more but somehow you don't walk away with a feeling of fatigue after watching such a long movie. It seems to do justice to the length even.
Looks like it all came together for Peter Jackson in this one. Everything seems to have gone right. Now Jackson can stand up on the top of the Empire State Building and do some chest beating himself.
Watch this movie but watch it on big screen or you do no justice to this movie.
Bluffmaster! (2005)
Wait for the DVD, get to soundtrack CD though.
From the moment I left the theater up to now, I still haven't been able to figure what feeling this movie left me with. It has several good things to speak about and some..well not so good. AB's baby has come a long way from the refuge of the Big B and has cemented his space as a star in Bolywood. Nana Patekar gives a splendid performance and nothing less could be expected from him either. There is little of Priyanka Chopra that people have not seen and in this movie they see even less of her which is actually a good thing. Boman Irani is a great actor in general but this is a performance which he would do good to forget. The surprise package of this movie, though, is Rietesh D. He carries his part to the T as the stumbling silly and lost protégé. He does seem to have a strange kind of charm about him which is easily noticeable in this movie. What leaves me dumb-found is the movie in itself. It is funny in parts and serious in all the wrong places. You keep getting this feeling being in a warp zone of some kind and you keep leaving your stomach behind. This is not for the excitement but just an uneasy feeling which makes you shift in your seat time and again. Sometimes the story tries too hard and at other times it just seems to not want to try at all. For instance the some of the gags are a bit much and the romance between Simi and Roy just falls flat. You begin to wonder somewhere along weather it would have been OK to just buy the soundtrack (which BTW is awesome) and pass up the movie but just then it pulls itself together and there you have it. Rohan Sippy seems to manage the last bit somehow again going a bit too far but just enough to make sure he rakes in the mullah. Not really a waste of money or time but I would much rather have watched this movie at home on a DVD.
