Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)
Beautiful, colorful and stylish
The colorful yet dark place of night city gives for a beautiful story that's both sad, hopeful and violent. It handles some heavy themes with social classes and injustice and also tackles love and despair, all while having an incredibly stylish art style matched with some beautiful music.
The characters are unique and really find a way to grow on you in the bleak world that takes place in cyberpunk these characters find comfort and hope within each other and accept the unfair reality they find themselves in, much like many of us in real life I feel like this story can resonate with many people.
This is a must watch.
Antlers (2021)
Good atmosphere but lacks something
It's beautifully filmed, and has some solid performances from the main cast, it is however very slow paced it instead relies on building up tension which it does to an extent but did not meet the expectations built in the ending.
Logic went out the window a couple of times, which keeps it from being a great movie. Creature design was fantastic, I just wish it had a bit more screen time.
Le guide de la famille parfaite (2021)
Captures a generation
The film does a great job in capturing today's problems when it comes to family and everyday life's problems. The movie looks great and I enjoyed the soundtrack.
It feels like this generation has been captured on camera and that is rarely nailed accurately without feeling off.
Trois jours et une vie (2019)
Beautiful cinematography
The cinematography is gorgeous and the movie has a great choice of music, scenes are filmed in dynamic shots that are very much character focused.
The story is filled with tention, and some great pieces of dialogue, pacing sometimes feels a bit odd as the movie skips large periods of time however the scenes we did see all serve a purpose.
Mortel (2019)
Must watch
The direction and photography here is incredible, visual effects are great and the story is fleshes out nicely.
Music is a good part of the show as well and it has a great soundtrack it deserves a second season.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Humanity at its core
It's a slow paced show that mixes emotional story telling with cool Sci fi ideas. Each episode has a different theme, loss, love, time passing us by and is very much trying to express the very things that make us human using sci-fi as a smart way to represent these themes.
It definitely won't be for everyone, if you enjoy shows like "The OA" I think you'll enjoy this one, even if you don't like a particular episode each one follows a different character and has a different feeling so it's worth experiencing as a whole .
A Monster Calls (2016)
A true tale of human emotion
This is a beautiful movie, it combines childhood like imagination with a very much real story and tells a tale that is both sad but with a shine of hope at the same time, it shows how human emotion is not black and white and does so in an incredibly well done beautiful story.
The animation here is incredibly well done and the stories told within the movie are illustrated very well, definitely a must watch for fans of good and human story telling.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
An awesome Journey
The pacing in this movie was something very different to most films, in many ways I felt like I was watching a TV show, it takes it time with its plot and characters and boy does it work and make it interesting. This is not a pure horror film it's more interested in presenting a story and its characters than scaring you and that is a good thing. This is a must watch for any fan of horror films
Cuernavaca (2017)
A look into loss and sudden change
The movie is beautifully filmed with bright and beautiful colors and it contrasts with the sad emotions of the film. It's follows the life of Andy and very much so is filmed from his point of view, leaving us feeling confused as to what's happening and what will become of him throughout the movie.
It does a great job of portraying that feeling of uncertainty in childhood, a time when you have very little control over what happens and how loss affects one deep through the core. It's very beautiful but not one I think everyone will enjoy, there's no action or complex storyline here just a very human story with very human emotions on display and in that it is excellent.
Mortel (2019)
Must watch
The direction and photography here is incredible, visual effects are great and the story is fleshes out nicely.
Music is a good part of the show as well and it has a great soundtrack it deserves a second season.
Ich seh, Ich seh (2014)
Very creepy and unexpected
The movie does a great job of setting up a story that makes you believe you know where it's going, but it changes dramatically and has some extremely well written twists, which if you pay attention well enough you may be able to notice as the direction and acting of both kids was excelent. Without giving too much away I recommend this film to any horror film fan looking for something creepy and different
Mid90s (2018)
Genuine characters
The film captures the mid 90s perfectly with a great combination of filming. Music and clothing which makes it feel very real. Without a doubt the best thing in this movie are the characters who all act extremely genuine and I bet most people can relate with knowing one of these personalities. At the end of the day it's all about a coming of age story which I would have loved lasted longer, the ending felt a little abrupt but still a great film
Daybreak (2019)
Very refreshing and stylish
I had my doubts about this one, but after watching the entire season I have to say it's one of the most unique and stylish series of the year, it takes a lots of freedom in storytelling and no 2 episodes follow the same style which makes them feel very unique. The thing that carries the show are the characters that are so well rounded and developed with great pace. Angelica specially shines and I hope we get a second season.
The Goldfinch (2019)
An emotional story with heart
This film was confusing at times if you haven't read the book since it jumps straight into Theo's life, I had a lot of questions right from the first 10 minutes of the film but it takes its time to unravel the story and allows us to see the full picture.
The best thing about the movie are the characters that interact and impact the way Theo develops and deals with his problems in life. There are some great performances and It's definitely worth a watch, it's worth noting the cinematography and music are also spectacular.
X+Y (2014)
Brilliant in many ways
The movie takes it's time to develop the characters and makes you see them as real people with dreams, struggles & emotions.
It deals with complex subjects like being the spectrum, grief and love and it never feels forced or unnatural if anything it feels real and authentic which is something so hard to achieve.
The music choice is also outstanding giving a real emotional boost to the scenes and add to that the incredible acting by all involved and you have yourself a masterfully crafted film. While it may not be for everybody if you're someone who likes good and emotional storytelling you'll certainly enjoy this.
Light of My Life (2019)
An emotional journey
The movie does an amazing job at creating a strong emotional connection with the characters and this due to the fact of the incredible chemistry and acting of our father and daughter duo. The dialogue between them feels very authentic.
The action scenes are very intense and a fine choice of music gives big importance to every moment in them. I know the movie will not be for everyone but take the time to watch it and you will find a movie made with passion and anything made with passion is worth watching.
Happy! (2017)
Gritty, gory and hilarious
Happy is a breath of fresh air in TV, the concept is so ridiculous that I never know how to explain it to someone without sounding crazy. But a retired cop with a death wish that speaks to a flying magical unicorn is an awesome way to lead to some hilarious dark humor and action packed story telling.
This is very unique and awesome definitely worth a watch.
Ad Astra (2019)
A personal journey
A cinematic masterpiece following its own path. Do not expect a movie with deep roots in science fiction but rather a personal journey of emotional growth of the characters.
Much of the film is made from the protagonist's point of view as you listen in on his thoughts, fears and aspirations. Leading to a very personal way of storytelling the outer space plot is interesting but is not the main element of the movie.
It Chapter Two (2019)
More heart than horror
The movie did a great job of adding emotional moments and shows us new scenes of the losers bonding as kids through flashbacks, the acting is on point and the casting was incredible. My main problem with the film is the use of CGI that doesn't look that realistic and can take off the horror element in certain scenes.
Don't expect a terrifying movie but do expect a movie with emotion, comedy and heart. It seems like they went with the strong points of the book which Is a good thing.
The Lion King (2019)
Breath taking animation
The animation in this movie is completely incredible it leads some beautiful reworks of the original songs like the circle of life. The animals do not have facial expressions for the most part however this ties in with the realism looked for in the remake and instead emotions are shown through body language and voice acting, it might feel a little odd at first but I really enjoyed it. Timon and puma steal the show on the remake as they get a little more dialogue and they're completely hilarious.
An incredible remake that is not as emotional as the original due to the realism but it doesn't take away from how incredible it looks and the nostalgia of every scene hits home in a different way.
Good Omens (2019)
A very faithful adaption
The casting was spot on for all of the characters, the whole mini series is extremely faithful to the book almost to a fault. What makes a good scene in a book does not always make a good scene in film and I feel that applied to a few scenes in this one.
Still I enjoyed it throughly seeing the world come to life and you can tell they worked hard on this, hopefully we can see more shows coming soon.
Osmosis (2019)
Engaging till the end
The show is very interesting it deals with philosophy of love, progress and wether the goal justifies the means.
It takes some surprising turns and the ending still has me thinking, can humans live in a state of unlimited happiness? This may be the start of a brave new world after all
Dark (2017)
Very dark indeed
This show does not hold your jand explaining everything that happens the story telling is very mysterious and gloomy but as it goes on everything starts to clear up and reveals an incredible interlocking story where every single character plays a crucial role whether you expected it or not and the science behind it all is very interesting, if the future created the past, which was first?
The OA (2016)
A show that questions the mind
Highly recommend this show for people who like mistery, philosophy Sci fi. Although keep in mind its a slowly built up story however once it takes off there's no coming back
Just like the first season finale the second season's finale is mind blowing, just when you think you know everything about the universe of the show it leaves you questioning things no other show has made me question before.
It's hard to explain but somehow this show had me question things about our reality I hope you watch the ending and really pay attention to the whole scene since it's brilliant what the writers came up with.
Errementari (2017)
A hidden Gem
This movie blew me away, it starts of slow and looked interesting but i didn't expect it to be so good, as the movie goes on it gets better and this continues throughout the entire film.
It has incredible cinematography in some scenes that looked spectacular for a low budget film I won't reveal too much but it's funny in a really dark way, and it's a great story as most folk tales are.
Go watch it at the very least you'll find it entertaining just don't give up on it on the first few minutes and make sure to watch it in the original language it adds a lot to the film.
