Ondskan (2003)
Ups and downs in a world of private school politics. A Swedish dead poets society without our hairy friend Robin Williams
High school drama by famous Swedish hunter and outdoors-man Guillou. A Swedish Ernst Hemingway without the beard. Deals with delicate issues such as class differences and easy going mainlanders. Both common subject in the Swedish official sector. Guillous alter ego, Erik Ponti, sets out on a course thru troublesome waters when he is sent to a private school at an early age by his not so easy going abusing step dad (Superbly played by the star from "the sickness" Johan Rabeus). well there he gets in trouble with skitenhelm, an upper class disaster played by Stellan "skyscraper" Skarsgårds least successful and attractive son Gustav. He is unforgettable. He's struggle against the whole unjustable system gives him respect from his fellow classmates and specially from his roommate, the neurotic Frenchman, with limited social skills. Pontis awesome skills in the swimming pool (helped by likable social democrat Kjelle Bergkvist) becomes a thorn in skitenhjelms side. A typical Swedish drama that deals with personal vendettas more than widespread injustice. Thumbs down for Guillous fantasy biography!
Byhåla (1991)
Political irony at it's peak
Excellent Swedish comedy that captured the essence of Swedish mentality throughout the 90's. A backstabbing government had turned their backs on Swedish filmmakers and this is the response. Ronny and Ragge managed to do something that had been a hard nut to crack for the entire Swedish film-communion (nutley came close with änglagård but everything falls apart with Wolff), they showed the Swedish audience that political irony and classic slapstick were a winning concept in Sweden too. Ronny and Ragge are two typical middle-class Swedish teens in search for love, lust and political justice. They live in a quiet small town far away from the metropolitan city of Stockholm. They spend their time driving around in their car spreading their political agenda to the locals (mostly hill-billies and drunks). Ronny and Ragge takes you back to the time where the small town was something you praised. The little man in the big country. One would say a Swedish gilbert grape! Although Ronny and Ragge was aired one the legendary Swedish youth-show Unga tvåan(youth two) it got a wider audience than Swedish favorite host Ingvar Oldsberg. Swedish hillbilly jokes mixed with serious political message makes the Ronny and Ragge characters to two of the most important teenage stars of the 90's. A must see!
Göta kanal eller Vem drog ur proppen? (1981)
Great flick, must have been one of the greatest comedies ever.
Hmm. where e should I start. There are so many things i would like to acknowledge. Superb actors: Janne "Loffe" Carlson and Frank Andersson (you know the Swedish wrestler and player). It's about a boat race at the göta kanal (channel of goth). Their is a lot of funny things going on. Like when the fat police, brilliantly played by famous Swedish play leader Peter Harrysson who's most known for it's work in the famous TV-show "that's how it sounds", jumped out of the boat after being bribed by one of the teams. Excellent comedy! I can especially relate to this comedy since I was born in the wharfes in Gothenburg where the final scene takes place. A quick resumé: Some rich sheik from a foreign country wants a big amount of a Swedish Luxuary boat and a race takes place at "Göta kanal" (channel of Goth) between Janne "Loffe" Karlsson (a typical Swedish working kid) and a rich boating industry.
The ending (read this if you don't want to see the movie): Janne "loffe" loses a bit surprisingly (I was devastated) but it turns out that their has been a uprising in the sheiks homeland and the contract for the boats is ripped apart. A funny twist is when Jannie "loffe" gets this big order of rowboats from the Norwegian Navy (srupid Norwegians(!)). Fun times all the way!
