Red Dragon (2002)
Another great movie, this time a prequel.
After the Oscar winning Silence Of The Lambs they made a good sequel with Hannibal so I was curious if the next movie could be as good. This time not a sequel but a prequel and again a worthy movie in this franchise. No Judie Foster or Julianne Moore this time but Edward Norton as the lead investigator. Great job from the entire cast that consisted of top actors and actresses. Anthony Hopkins again in probably the best character of his career. Hannibal Lecter is just written for him. Ralph Fiennes plays the other deranged serial killer and he nailed it as well. Three movies in this franchise for the moment and not one bad one, with the original standing out from the rest. Tonight the next one with Hannibal Rising, hopefully of the same quality.
Hannibal (2001)
A worthy sequel.
Ten years after the Oscar winning The Silence Of The Lambs from Jonathan Demme they finally made a sequel, this time by the more famous director Ridley Scott. Jonathan Demme's movie won five Oscars, all well deserved as that movie is still a gem, even now. And alrhough Ridley Scott made some gems as well the first movie was just much better than Hannibal. Still a very good movie though, but casting Julianne Moore as agent Clarice Sterling instead of Jodie Foster did just not had the same effect. Nothing bad to say about Julianne though as she's a good actress, but it's just a pity Jodie Foster didn't play her character, probably her best character ever. Luckily Anthony Hopkins still played Hannibal, honestly a role that only he could play that well. All in all it's a worthy sequel, maybe not as suspenseful but still a very good watch, certainly for the fans.
The Penguin (2024)
Outstanding show.
DC Comics or Marvel, I just love that kind of entertainment, and even though The Penguin doesn't have the typical superhero or villain characteristics it's just a phenomenal mini-series. Hats off for Colin Farrell for his outstanding performance and hats off for the make-up artists as well as they did an incredible job transforming Colin Farrell into his unrecognizable character. If my wife would not have told me it was Colin Farrell playing The Penguin I would never have guessed it. Just his eyes in close-up sometimes gave you a clue. Cristin Milioti was also great in this crime/gangster show. And Rhenzy Feliz was the perfect side kick of The Penguin. Too bad the show is only eight episodes long because it could go on for much longer if it was up to me. I absolutely loved it.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
An absolute gem.
For a crime/thriller about a serial killer to win five Oscars it has to be an outstanding movie and it undeniably is. I watched this movie at least five times and I still enjoy it even though the element of surprise isn't there anymore. But I rate it as it was the first time I watched it, and that was just the absolute top in this genre. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins were just phenomenal and they both deserve their Oscar for their outstanding performances. Even after so many years my wife and I still recite famous movie lines from this gem, like "it puts the lotion or it gets the hose" or "quid pro quo Clarice, quid pro quo". To me this movie is just perfect and a must watch for the amateurs of the serial killer genre.
1992 (2022)
Ray Liotta's last movie.
1992 is worth watching if you like heist/action movies. It's also Ray Liotta's last movie ever as he sadly passed away since then. So as a homage to him it's also worth watching. Tyrese Gibson plays the righteous defender of morals and Scott Eastwood the son of Ray Liotta, a small time crook trying to score a life-changing big hit. Scott Eastwood is the son of the legendary Clint Eastwood, and there's absolutely no doubt about that as he's the spitting image of his father. Not yet the same charisma though but good enough to be believable. It's an entertaining heist movie, not flawless but in this genre you can't be too picky.
Saturday Night (2024)
Congratulations, you made an awful movie about a great show.
Well what can I say? I was really looking forward to watch this movie. Because I and millions of others had a lot of fun watching SNL over the years, a show that had me laughing almost constantly. What a contrast with this movie where I didn't laugh once. They managed to make a boring movie about a very successful franchise. And it's not the acting that wasn't good, it was just everything else, from the very boring plot, the awful soundtrack (how annoying it was to have to listen to that jazzy piano music during the entire movie), and the lousy cinematography. What a major letdown. What a waste of my precious time.
The Hangover Part III (2013)
Still good even though the first two were better.
My wife and I decided to rewatch the three movies from The Hangover as we already enjoyed them a lot in the past. It's just our kind of humour. I get it that not everybody finds this funny but it's just impossible to please everybody with comedies as we all have a different sense of humour. The first two movies were the best ones (we both scored them a nine) but this one is still a very good comedy. Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha are at it again, this time not on a bender but still a lot of crazy scenes and situations. Ken Jeong is definitely the best character in all the movies. His hyper energetic character is just a delight to watch. To me they can make another Hangover, it will give me a reason to rewatch them all again.
Smile 2 (2024)
Good sequel.
I watched the first Smile after a friend told me he was freaked out after watching that movie. I see why he was freaked out, watching freaky longlasting smiles does something unusual to you, giving you an uncomfortable feeling, so yes it was a good movie, it was for once a new theme in the horror genre. So I was curious about this sequel as sequels sometimes tend to be of much lesser quality than their predecessor. But it was a more than decent sequel, freaky again, and good acting from the entire cast. Naomi Scott and Rosemarie Dewitt play daughter and mother and they did a good job. Good cinematography as well. A worthy sequel.
The Hangover Part II (2011)
Great again.
My wife and I decided to rewatch all the movies from this franchise as we both enjoyed them very much the first time we watched them. Not often you see good sequels but in this case the sequel is of the same level as the original. Maybe not the kind of humour that will entertain everybody but to us it's just perfect. The gang is back and this time it's not Las Vegas but Thailand where of course everything goes crazy again. Justin Bartha, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Ken Jeong embark in another wild adventure. My favourite characters are again Zach, Ed and Ken but they are just all good to be honest. Great movie, looking forward to the third movie.
The Hangover (2009)
A classic, loved it.
It's time to rewatch the three movies from this franchise. The Hangover was a movie I enjoyed a lot watching when it was released on the big screen. It was just great fun and it still is now. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but with humour you will never please everybody as we all have a different sense of humour. To me some scenes were just hilarious. The adventures in Las Vegas of Justin Bartha, Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis are just legendary. Of course some characters are funnier than others, my favourites are definitely played by Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis from this quartet. But the absolute best character is played by Ken Jeong. He really adds that something unique to the story. Tonight it's time for part two, looking forward to it.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Not really a remake of the original, similar yes.
My wife and I decided to rewatch the entire Planet Of The Apes franchise, this time in the chronological order and not by release date, which didn't really matter as the chronological order isn't that accurate. Watching the recent ones first as they were prequels, all of them were good with the 2011 Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes as the best one of all of them. The older sequels after the original from 1968 weren't good, some borderline awful. So we finished with the so called remake from Tim Burton. It's similar to the original one but certainly not a remake. The ending of the original surprised everybody at that time, in a good way, and was much better than in this one, which I found confusing and not that great. Mark Wahlberg is definitely better than Charlton Heston, and so were the other actors of this movie. It just shows everything is better nowadays, lesser overacting and just much better cinematography. All in all a decent movie but not as good as the prequels.
Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)
Maybe the lowest score but actually the better sequel of the three.
Before watching the latest Planet Of The Apes movie fronm 2024 my wife and I decided to rewatch all the movies but this time in chronological order and not by release date. Not that it really matter though as the prequels and sequels got a little bit mixed up with their stories. The modern prequels were of high quality with the 2011 Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes standing out from the rest. To me still the best movie of all of them. After the original movie from 1968 the quality went seriously down, especially story wise, acting and lousy special effects, even for that time. I'm surprised The Battle Of The Planet Of The Apes gets the lowest score as in my opinion it's actually the more decent one of the sequels. Still not great though but slightly better than the second and third movie. Tonight we finish the whole franchise with the remake of the original one, starring Mark Wahlberg. The story won't surprise me as I suppose it will be exactly the same but I expect some much better special effects.
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)
Another bad sequel.
My wife and I had the luminous idea to watch all The Planet Of The Apes movies again but this time in chronological order and not by release date. I have to say it was great in the beginning with all the more recent movies, the actual prequels to the original movie of 1968 with Charlton Heston. The CGI's of the modern movies were just great, and so were the stories. But then to go back in time and rewatch all the old ones is hard to be honest. The original is still good but the sequels are not good at all. Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes is not an exception, it's just bad. Bad acting, a weak story, and lousy cinematography. It made me realize we live in a time where there are a lot of good quality movies whilst in the past we were just easily entertained but it was just not that great, besides a couple exceptions, the acting looked all forced and overly exaggerated. Credits to the new actors, it's just all much better now. Tonight we're going to watch the next sequel, not really looking forward to it to be honest as I can't imagine improvements.
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971)
Another bad sequel.
Since the new 2024 Planet Of The Apes (Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes) my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to rewatch the entire franchise but this time in chronological order and not by the release date. That makes it easier to follow the whole story but it turned out to be more difficult to watch after the first five movies. The four modern sequels are full of great CGI's and a good story on top of it. Rewatching the original one was also not bad as it was a cult movie. The problems started with the first sequel which was not good at all and didn't give me high hopes for Escape From The Planet Of The Apes. The movie turned out to be slightly better but still not good at all. Again a weak story and mediocre acting. Still two more movies to go (three if you count the remake of the original one with Mark Wahlberg). Some movies don't age well at all, hopefully the next one is worth watching but I fear for it.
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)
That was not good for a sequel of a classic.
The Planet Of The Apes, a bunch of movies that managed to entertain a lot of people, me included. My wife and I decided to rewatch all the movies, not by release date but by chronological order which means we started with the 2011 movie Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, followed by Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, then War Of The Planet Of The Apes, then Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, to finally start back with the first movie which despite its obvious lack of CGI's (what made all the more recent movies really standing out) still was a good movie, especially for that time. So you could say all the modern sequels were good. In this first sequel the quality serious plummeted, with a weak story and very cheap special effects. James Franciscus is better than Charlton Heston in my opinion, but that doesn't make this movie better than its predecessor. Linda Harrison finally said her first word, well just one word, but she's still eye candy and nothing else. Tonight we're watching the next sequel in the hope it will get much better again because this one is really the worst one, hopefully it remains the worst one.
In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery (2024)
Remains a mystery but worth watching.
In Cold Water: The Shelter Bay Mystery is another crime/mystery documentary. We get a lot of those shows lately, not that I mind though, as I enjoy watching these kind of mini series. You get to make your own conclusions, playing for jury by yourself. The interviews were interesting, which showed with what kind of people we're dealing with here. From a very suspicious husband to a narcissistic detective to not so very convincing witnesses. You get an idea of what happened but we probably will never know what exactly happened. Good cinematography made this years long investigation worth watching.
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Still good despite its flaws.
Since they just made another Planet Of The Apes movie my wife and I decided to rewatch all the movies from this franchise but this time in chronological order and not by date of release. So we watched The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, then The Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, then The War Of The Planet Of The Apes and then The Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. The 2011 one is to me the best of all of them, but even all the others were highly entertaining, which is quite rare with sequels. Obviously the great CGI's played a big role, so I was really wondering if the original movie from 1968 would still have that same effect on me as it did such a long time ago. That movie pleased so many people at that time, me included. After rewatching this masterpiece I can still say I liked it although now it's obvious Charlton Heston is a bit of an overactor. Nowadays actors are just much better, that's just a fact. I still remembered the ending which had so many people flabbergasted in 1968, so the element of surprise wasn't there this time. But besides the not so great acting, the lack of CGI's, and the absence of surprise the original movie is still a good movie. Not as good as in 1968 but still a movie worth watching even if it didn't age super well. Tonight another ape movie, looking forward to it.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Another good Planet Of The Apes movie.
When the first Planet Of The Apes came out, in 1968 with Charlton Heston, it was clear this franchise had a great future. A lot of people enjoyed that movie, me included. So many sequels later they come with another one, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. Before watching this one my wife and I thought it would be a good idea to rewatch all the movies but this time in chronological order and not by release date. So first we watched the 2011 Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (9 stars), which in my opinion is one of the best ones, followed by the 2014 Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (8 stars), then the 2017 War Of The Planet Of The Apes (7 stars). All great movies, certainly due to the incredible CGI's and all the different casts of good actors. Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is another very enjoyable movie, long duration again but never boring. Tomorrow it's finally time to rewatch the 1968 classic, hopefully still as good as then since there was no such things as CGI's back then. A movie that I will always remember, let's see if it aged well.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Another very good Planet Of The Apes movie.
The 1968 Planet Of The Apes with Charlton Heston was a movie that had a great success when it came out, and I was one of them that enjoyed that movie very much. So many sequels came after that, and dare I say quite successful considering that sequels often bomb in a bad way. I decided to rewatch all of them, this time in the chronological order so not by date of release. After watching Rise Of The Planet Of the Apes from 2011, which in my opinion is one of the best ones (I rated it a nine), it was time for the second movie Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Another very satisfying sequel, with great CGI's, a very well chosen cast, all good actors that delivered again. In the first movie you feel compassion for the monkeys, a bit lesser this time, but still a great movie for people that like animals versus humans stories. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow to continue The Planet Of The Apes saga. What a great franchise this is.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
One of the better ones of this franchise.
The original movie from 1968 The Planet Of The Apes with Charlton Heston was a movie that had an immense success in those years. A movie that I really enjoyed watching back then. Since they decided to make much more sequels, some better than others, I decided to rewatch all of them but this time in chronological order. So the 2011 Rise Of The Planet Of the Apes is the first story from this franchise and in my opinion one of the better ones. Great CGI's and a story that will make you immediately take the side of the apes, unless there's something wrong with you, like being a hunter or so and you enjoy killing animals for fun. You can't help it to feel compassion for them and to hate humans. Well that was my feeling whilst watching this very enjoyable movie. No boring moments, just plenty of action and all very well shot and made. Good acting from the entire cast, from humans to monkeys, from real persons to CGI's. Tonight I will watch the second movie, The Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes from 2014, and hope to have a similar positive experience as with this one.
My Old Ass (2024)
Emotional story.
Romantic comedies, not really the genre I would go for normally, but in all fairness I have to admit I enjoyed watching this movie. I didn't laugh a lot though, so as a comedy it was just so-so, but the romance/drama was pleasant to follow. It got me shed a tear at one point but I don't mind having a couple tears rolling down my cheeks every now and then. The story was mostly about the growing relationship between Percy Hynes White and Maisy Stella. They both did a good job playing their characters. I would have liked a bit more of Aubrey Plaza as she had only smaller parts but she had me shed a tear so you certainly could say she was convincing in her small parts. I think the story will get to people that lost a dear beloved one. Personally I had to think about a couple of lost souls and that's never bad as it brought back the good memories I had with them. My wife and I enjoyed watching this movie. It deserves its good ratings.
A Different Man (2024)
Snoozefest...
I don't know who decides where movies should be categorized on here but I doubt that that person is competent. I solely watched this movie because it was categorized as a comedy/thriller but it was none of those. I didn't laugh once and there's nothing wrong with my sense of humour. I didn't get thrills either, far from it, as I almost fell asleep. A Different Man is a drama, a boring one on top of that. Dramas are certainly not my favourite kind of movies but every now and then you have a good one, this one wasn't, despite the extremely high ratings it gets on here. The only positive thing was the acting, that was good and that from the entire cast. Too bad the story was so boring to follow.
Spirit in the Blood (2024)
Boring and predictable.
When you watch a lot of movies and series like I do there are some movies I have to review immediately just after watching it, and certainly not wait until the next day as I will have forgotten everything about it. Spirit In The Blood is one of those movies, nothing special about it, boring at one point, and full of annoying characters. Is there anything else more annoying than bickering teenage girls? I can't think of anything else and that's basically seventy percent of what you get when watching this not very entertaining story. Pretty predictable as well so in short nothing that will make you want to watch this movie again in the future. I will for sure not watch it again.
Physical (2021)
Boring drama, not funny at all, about an eating disorder.
My wife and I like the same movies, the same series, so I was curious to see if we had the same taste of series as my sister-in-law as she clearly enjoyed this show very much. I guess we don't as we found it borderline boring. Rose Byrne is not a bad actress, nor were the rest of the cast, but that's about it. Categorized as a comedy/drama I can only agree there was a lot of drama but as for the comedy I'm still waiting for my first laugh, let alone a shy grin. It's basically about an eating disorder, a subject I have zero percent empathy for. It might sound cruel but it's what it is. You're hungry, you eat, you're not hungry you don't eat, you're fat you watch what you're eat, you're too thin you change your diet as well. To me it's that simple. So watching and mostly hearing a narrating voice whining about her disorder and that during three full seasons is just boring. They dragged this show out for three seasons, way too long in my opinion, but as I finish everything I started watching, good or bad, I can't say I had a great time watching Physical. Glad it's finally finished, time for something much better, hopefully.
Bagman (2024)
Watchable and forgettable.
Bagman has a nice poster, one that attracts horror aficionados like myself, but that of course doesn't guarantee a good movie, which it wasn't by the way. Like usual in this genre there was a lot of bad parenting. Who in his right mind would leave their kid alone when suspicious things happen? But that didn't really bother me, that's part of the routine in these kind of stories. It's just the entire story that is a bit stupid, and not really scary which is not a positive note when watching a horror movie. The villain is kinda creepy but it's all low budget. Like the acting, that could also have been better. The kid played by Caréll Vincent Rhoden was annoying but in my opinion the better actor of them all. All in all it's watchable but also very forgettable.
