The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Loved this so much!
I loved the satire and comedy elements of this. If I had not read that this was a black comedy, I may have been scratching my head a little, but having known that from the beginning, I absolutely loved it. Kristin Bell was perfect in this. All of the actors were great and it kept me guessing throughout. I actually laughed out loud several times. I watched the whole series in 1 day. I couldn't stop and I loved the subtle silliness of it. I gave it a 9 because I felt the ending was just SO out there, but I still absolutely loved it. Thank you, Netflix! Great job! I look forward to more shows like this from you.
The Beales of Grey Gardens (2006)
My favorite movie
I have watched this movie 5 times in the past month. I think I am a little obsessed with Edie Beale. She shows such joie de vivre in this film and is full of joy and wonder. The movie is wistful and at times bittersweet. I wish I could have known the Beales and visited them. They show such love and respect for each other. I also love Lois. This movie makes me nostalgic for the 1970s. I feel like I am in a time capsule. I actually prefer this movie to Grey Gardens; I felt that Edie's true personality, charm and joy was shown in a better light. Lois was also highlighted more. Love love love this movie. I will probably watch it a million more times. When I watch it, I feel like I am a friend visiting with them, passing the time and singing songs. It puts me at peace. Namaste.
Made for Love (2021)
My favorite show in 2022
I loved this show so much. The acting by Hazel (Cristin Milioti), Billy Magnussen (Byron Gogol) and Ray Romano was outstanding. However, I thought all of the acting was great. The show is quirky, funny and suspenseful all at once. It is a wonderful comedy drama. I watched both seasons in just a few days and I already miss it. I hope the 3rd season comes soon! Love love love it!
The Righteous Gemstones (2019)
I really wanted to love this.
My husband and I watched Season 1 Episode 1 a few nights ago and absolutely loved it. There were so many funny parts - the wave pool, the parking lot scene, etc. However, we watched a few more episodes and it started feeling like a chore. I don't mind swearing and male nudity. However, it seemed overused. We loved the black humor of the first episode, but each episode afterwards felt less and less funny and darker and more depressing. It no longer felt like a comedy. We also didn't care about any of the characters. For me, there has to be at least one redeeming character that I can care about and relate to. After four episodes, we decided to call it quits. I prefer something lighter that makes me laugh. However, some of our friends absolutely love this show. To each their own. Namaste.
Ms. White Light (2019)
One of My favorite movies
This movie was a little gem. Roberta Colindrez was amazing in this. I loved the subtle humor. I laughed several times throughout the movie. It really made me think and made me care about the characters. I thought the acting and writing were both great. I thought it was a beautiful, uplifting movie that made me laugh and I loved it.
In the Dark (2019)
WOW!!!!!!! Loved this show - especially Season 3
I disagree with viewers that stated Season 3 dropped the ball. I think Season 3 may have been the best season. The acting is great. The characters are believable, and each episode is suspenseful. I could never guess what would happen next. I think, unlike a few other shows on Netflix ("Another World" - UGGHHH), the writing was excellent with just the right amount of humor thrown in. I loved this show, connected to most of the characters and watched all of Season 3 in just 2 or 3 days. Love love loved it. In my opinion, the ending of season 3 was believable. It also left this open for a Season 4. Can't wait!!!! My favorite show this year.
Dick Johnson Is Dead (2020)
Favorite film of the year
I was blown away by this movie. I am so happy that I saw it in a listing of Emmy Nominees. I may have missed this otherwise. This was a pure gem. I just watched this, and I am still crying. It was beautiful, heartfelt, funny and real. I fell in love with Dick Johnson. He reminded me a little of my dad - self effacing, funny, kind, considerate and loving. My dad passed away in 1998 at the age of 69 from a heart attack due to Type 1 Diabetes. I am not sure if I am crying partly for the loss of my wonderful dad or the thought of this wonderful man passing away. I love you, Dick Johnson, and I love this gem of a movie. <3 <3 <3. Your daughter Kirsten is pretty special also.
Mr & Mrs Murder (2013)
Love love love it!
I have had a hard time finding a favorite show since Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I loved that series so much. It is hard finding something that both my 85 year old mother and I can both watch and like. Last night we watched a few episodes of Mr. And Mrs. Murder and loved it! It is refreshing, light, funny and the Australian scenery is beautiful. I wish there were more than 13 episodes. The acting is great and the guest stars are interesting and fun. Love love love it!!!!
Ms Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries (2019)
I really tried but just couldn't appreciate this series
After absolutely loving "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries", I had such high hopes for this series. I loved the lead actress Geraldine Hakewill in the show "Wanted". She was absolutely amazing in it. However, I REALLY Tried to like this show, but it just fell flat for me. I watched a few episodes, and they were ok. However, I finally turned it off halfway through in the episode where the detective was drugged. I didn't feel he was believable and I didn't care for the storyline. It seemed too contrived. I kept (probably unfairly) comparing the detective's acting to the wonderful detective in the original series and to me, it fell short. In the original series, there was undeniable chemistry between Miss Fisher and the detective. However, in this series I just didn't feel any chemistry at all between them. My 85 year old mother who LOVED The original series was so excited to see this show. However, after we had watched 5 minutes of this she said "I cannot watch this." I am glad that many people enjoy this show. At 59, I may just be too old for it. Maybe the 30 somethings like this better. It just fell a little flat for me. Namaste.
Queens of Mystery (2019)
Loved the quirky characters and light humor
I really enjoyed this series. At 59 years old, I really resonated with the aunts. I loved the bond they shared with each other and their niece and loved their quirkiness. My favorite character is "Cat". Loved her in the series "Benidorm" and she is even better in this series. I am so looking forward to the second season. I can't wait to see how the mystery of her missing mother and identity of her father is solved. Namaste.
Solos (2021)
I loved this series so much.
I wasn't expecting great things because the overall reviews were low, but the actors are reputable so I thought I'd give it a try. Solos seems to be polarizing. You either love it or hate it. I absolutely loved it. I laughed and cried (mostly cried) multiple times throughout. Each story was poignant and I really cared about the characters. The last episode with Morgan Freeman tied everything together and it was the most heartfelt and poignant of the episodes in my opinion. The 2nd episode was a gem also, but I loved them all, even the lowest rated episode with the mother and baby. One of my favorites was the episode with Constance Wu. It was a little bit of a roller coaster ride and left me bawling. I think empathetic people will enjoy the series the most. People who are introspective and like thought provoking, quiet shows will most likely love this. Others who prefer action and less talk, who are not overly emotional, may not "get" this. It was my favorite series this year. I think the writing was mostly brilliant and I hope there is another season. On a side note, I usually do not care for science fiction but I absolutely loved this due to the rich characters and writing. Namaste.
Scarborough (2019)
Loved this show so much!!!!!
I thought I would never find something I enjoyed as much as Benidorm, but I did. I think this show may be even better. Jake Canuso was wonderful in this and I loved all of the main characters. Solid acting and I laughed out loud several times. I am so so so disappointed this was not renewed for a 2nd season. I think Derren Litten - the creator and writer - is an absolute genius. I watched all 6 episodes today and loved them all. Derren - please give us a new series. We Love you!!!!!
Living the Dream (2017)
Love this Show!!!!!!
I have to admit - when I first watched the first or second episode, I didn't really care for this show. However, I kept watching and it really grew on me. I especially loved Troy in the first season. The Character was larger than life (literally and figuratively) with a heart of gold under a rough exterior. I really miss him in Season 2. Kim Field was also wonderful in Season 1. Love Leslie Jordan (Aiden). He is great in everything he plays. He has brought a lot of humor and light to the show. Honestly, he really makes the show for me. Leslie Sharp and Philip Glenister are great actors - Mal and Jen have good chemistry and the characters are believable and funny. I was worried I wouldn't find anything to replace the show "Benidorm" after it ended - I loved the show so much. However, Living the Dream, to me, is just as funny. It is lighthearted and I feel good just watching it. Love love love. The Southern accents seem a little overdone some times, but that is my only critique. It is my new favorite show.
P.S. Burn This Letter Please (2020)
I loved this so much.
This is probably the best documentary I have ever seen. It was beautiful, honest, poignant and heartfelt. It really opened my eyes on what female impersonators and drag queens have gone through in our society. I cried several times. This is the most meaningful movie I've seen in years. Loved it!
Benidorm (2007)
Love love love this show!!!!
Benidorm is my favorite show of all time. I rated it a 9 instead of a 10 because the last few seasons weren't quite as good - especially seasons 9 and 10. However, even in the later seasons, there were memorable moments. After I watched all 10 seasons, I started over. I am re-watching the second season now and it is absolutely hilarious. Re-watching allows me to really watch the acting, pick up on things I missed before, and it is even funnier. There were so many good actors and lines in this show - especially in the first 6 seasons. Some reviewers have said they didn't care for Joey, but I liked his innocence and sweetness. None of the characters really irritated me except possibly Monty saying "Chips AND Rice" over and over and over again. It was meant to be funny, but it fell flat for me. I also didn't care for Sammy Valentino too much. The Garveys, Mateo and Jacqueline were my favorites. Wonderful lines and just so many laughs. Mateo was just the best. Loved him! The Bullfight in Season 2 was absolutely hilarious. Loved it! Whenever I am down, I turn on Benidorm and it just cheers me up. Love it!!!!!!!!
Holidate (2020)
You either love or hate this movie....
I've never given a 3 as a rating before, but I really disliked this movie. It's funny because my twin sister really loved it and recommended it to me. I think it may be a generational thing. I am 59 and may just be too old for it. Teenagers and 20 somethings may love this movie. I just found it to be a little vulgar and not funny. It had many moments that made me cringe that I didn't feel were funny. It left me feeling sad and a little empty. In fairness, I could only watch about 45 minutes of it before I called it quits. Namaste...
You're the Worst (2014)
My favorite Guilty Pleasure
I retired early a few months ago and I binge watched all 5 seasons within a few weeks. It was my favorite show. I know, at Age 58, I am not the target audience. I'll admit there were times I wanted to give up on it because the characters - especially Gretchen - could be extremely unlikeable. However, I found that even skipping it for a day or two, I really missed the show. I watched the final 4 episodes today and LOVED The season finale. I love the characters and I miss them already. I wouldn't recommend this show to everyone - the more conservative people may not care for the shock value. However, for those viewers, like me, who love a quirky show with fun plots, good acting and believable characters, this may be their new favorite also. I am very sad to see it end.
Our Father's Keeper (2020)
Shayla McCaffrey is amazing in this!!!!
I loved this movie so much. What a heartfelt movie. Both the acting and plot were great. However, I felt that Shayla McCaffrey, the teenage girl who helped David (The father) was just amazing. She is such a beautiful, bright light. I look forward to watching more things that she is in. She just made me want to give her a big hug. Loved the dad in the movie also.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Love Jennifer Aniston, but Adam Sandler falls flat for me
The movie was entertaining, but Adam Sandler's sophmoric jokes just get on my nerves. He is like the bumbling, embarrassing drunk at a party that you just want to get away from. I thought that most of the jokes fell flat, and I was just embarrassed for everyone involved. Aside from Wedding Singer, Click, Mr. Deeds and 50 First Dates, I haven't cared for any of his movies. I just don't think he's funny in most cases. However, I loved the rest of the cast. Jennifer Aniston always shines, and the other cast members were entertaining as well. I especially loved Olafur Olafsson. He is hilarious in everything he does. However, the plot didn't really hold up. At times I almost turned it off, but I have seen worse movies. It wasn't a bad way to spend an afternoon.
The Time of Their Lives (2017)
Sweet, sad, uplifting film. Loved it!!!!
I really loved this movie. Joan and Pauline Collins were perfect in their roles, and the whole cast was great. I loved that Priscilla found love with the reclusive millionaire even though it was for a brief moment. The plot seemed real and believable and I had the time of my life watching it. It made me want to watch more films with Pauline Collins. It made me want to befriend the 2 characters and go on an adventure with them. The film ended with hope and joy and possibly redemption, and I think that is all we can really ask for in life. I loved this movie and plan to watch it again soon.
Dina (2017)
Genuine and Moving
At first I was a little ambivalent about this movie. While watching it (about an hour in), my husband said "Can we turn this off?" Parts of the movie were awkward and a little difficult to watch. However, there were several times I laughed out loud and really enjoyed the scenes. I especially loved the bachelorette party with the stripper. It was hilarious. I also really started to care about the characters; especially Dina. Dina is so open and honest and genuine that it is very easy to care about her. I thought that in real life we could be friends. The 911 call towards the end was very moving. Movies that mean the most to me are the ones I can't stop thinking about after they are over. I felt that way with this movie. I wanted to know MORE about Dina and was sorry the movie had ended. I wanted to keep up with her life and join in the conversations with her and Scott - ie talks about Hilary versus Trump and the election. Ha! I loved this movie. I love that it made me THINK About Aspberger's and autism, but it wasn't overly sympathetic - just genuine and real and thought provoking. I think people will either love or hate this movie, but that most will be moved and changed for the better.
River (2015)
Love love loved River!!!!
I have to admit that I wasn't expecting great things. I channel surfed on Net Flix and saw that this was a BBC Detective mystery. The BBC Seems to consistently deliver quality programs, so I thought "Why not?" After the first 5 minutes, when River's partner Stevie sang joyfully to Tina Charles song "I love to love", I was transfixed. I watched all 6 episodes yesterday - a Saturday with 14 inches of snow piling up outside.
This series made me laugh and cry more than any other series I've ever watched. It was heartwarming, dramatic and suspenseful. I fell in love with Stevie and River and felt empathy for most of the other characters.
I loved this series more than I can say. I plan to watch the whole series again over Thanksgiving when my mom comes to visit.
If I could give this an 11, I would. Please ignore the haters. You really can't please everyone.
I plan to watch everything Nicola Walker ever did. She is the most amazing actress I've ever watched. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
Ouwehoeren (2011)
Loved the Fokkens!!!
**** SPOILER ALERT***
I was so pleasantly surprised by this authentic, original documentary that I watched it twice in one day. When I originally saw the title, I thought there was no way I'd be interested in it. However, my husband had watched it and I was curious. I loved it even more than he did. The sisters are so genuine and real and caring. They have a sense of humor and love of life that is just contagious. It made me want to learn more about them. I wanted to move to Amsterdam and befriend them and buy their paintings. The sex scenes, while graphic, seemed tasteful. Martine seemed to really care about her customers and want to make them happy. She has a positive outlook on life overall and believes that most men are kind. Both sisters had a quiet dignity that was really appealing. I loved this documentary more than I can say.
The Last Man on Earth (2015)
Hate is not a strong enough word.
I have never written a show review before, but I was shocked by how much I actively disliked this show. Maureen's critic review on Huntington Post is absolutely perfect, in my opinion.
For a comedy, to me, the main characters were extremely unlikable and unfunny. Phil is a lazy, self pitying, boring jerk. I loved other reviewers references to him as a "Charles Manson" wannabe. Maureen also referred to him as "BEARDO" which made me laugh. It's too bad there were so few laughs in watching Last Man on Earth. The humor was sophomoric, scatological and sometimes mean. If you like watching a grown man throwing balls all over the place, crashing cars, trashing a house and using the swimming pool as a bathroom, then maybe this show will appeal to you. I thought the show would improve with the introduction of the other character, but it didn't. It got worse.
I would not watch this show again if it were the Last SHOW on Earth.
