Wow, this movie was so great! I have never seen the theatrical production of Wicked, so I wasn't very interested in seeing this movie at first, but a friend of mine invited me to watch it so I went in to see it with an open mind. I have always been a huge fan of the original Wizard of Oz from 1939 and since I live in Brisbane, Australia, I am also very excited for the Wizard of Oz themed land witch will open at Warner Bros. Movie world on Boxing Day at the end of the year.
Overall, I was blown away by this movie, more specifically by the production design which was incredible. Everything in this movie all down to the architecture and the mese en scene was so wondrous and gorgeous to look at. O also loved the aesthetic of Emerald City, which was very welcoming wonderful, warm and enchanting.
The acting was great too, all of the cast put on great and dazzling performances and the musical numbers were spectacular. Overall, a perfect first parter movie about a very interesting story of how a villain saves the world. I highly encourage you to go see it!

I was browsing through DVD King in Brisbane when I saw a copy of the restored version of Metropolis on the shelf, I felt like I had no choice but to pick it up and buy it for $35 (what a steal!) and I'm sure glad I did!
I can see why this movie inspired countless iconic Science Fiction films and even franchises that came out after it in its wake, because this is a true piece of art captured in time with a potent message (especially for today) and mindblowingly impressive worldbuilding for the 1920s.
This movie is the definition of "The Roaring Twenties" with the atmosphere of technological progress and societal change roaring forth in full force. It's hard to tell whether Fritz Lang was trying to satirize society at that time or whether this was meant to be taken completely seriously at the time. I really can't tell.
The set and production design is outstandingly excellent for 1927 and I can only imagine how this made people feel at the time. This is without a doubt the most impressive achievement of the silent film era and I actually think it benefits from not actually having any recorded dialogue in it, allowing the music and visuals to tell the story.
The music is great too, with many memorable pieces with one in particular getting stuck in my head which lasted a few days, There are massive orchestral swells and crescendos which are very well synchronized with the rising tension of the third act and climax which must've been very original and boundary pushing for the time, since most silent music of that time was usually just one piano plus maybe a couple of other instruments just to put something in that was fitting to the mood of the scene. This however is a full orchestral arrangement with pieces of music that flow and change with the flowing story.
The acting is pretty great too. Sure, it's still a silent film, but the expression on the actor's faces are still pretty well acted and convincing. It's still a far cry from acceptable acting nowadays, but this is outstanding stuff for the era that it was filmed in.
It's just incredible just how much this film was able to convey despite the crippling limitation of the time in history when this was produced. Apparently, the budget of this movie was made in is the 2021 equivalent of 25 million Euros. Wow!
Overall, this is still a masterpiece of its time, and I am very happy to have finally watched it. I highly recommend you do the same :)
It's amazing of how much it has been restored which is %95 total film restoration. There is a little bit of it where the film is missing and there are a few text prompts of what you are supposed to be seeing. However, about half of the film is restored to clear looking shot with the other half still looking very degraded with a lot of stringy grain and scratches obstructing the shots, but I'll admit it does have its own charm.
