Madame Web (2024)
Missed opportunities but not terrible
This is not as bad as people say. The people handing out 1 star reviews must have never seen the fantastic four movie from the mid 90s.
The story is deliberately disjointed to give the audience a bit of a glimpse into what it feels like to be webb herself. It actually treats you with a little respect in regard to piecing things together, which is frankly more than can be said for the majority of superhero films out there.
The character is drab compared to the depth of comic book character and johnson is a little too deadpan in scenes where we would expect more of a reaction.
Overall the setup here is good for future movies, and it plays nicely into the Spiderman universe to set the character up for a broader use.
Interstellar (2014)
Swiss cheese
I don't write many reviews, and I avoided this movie for years because I am excessively critical of science fiction as a genre. As I have gotten older I have come to really appreciate a well thought out story that is cohesive and realistic. This movie is not that by any means.
I really have no intention of writing an excessively long review of this film, The plot is riddled with holes that you cannot easily explain away, the acting is all over the place and not in a good way. Some people are wooden others are over acting. Some performances really make you want to feel emotion for the character but their detachment is obvious which drops you right out of the movie. The writing is hard to swallow sometimes, and just adds to the derivative nature of this film.
The things this movie has going for it, are the visuals. Pair the visuals cinematography etc with the score and that's where I get my conclusion of a 6 out of 10. If this movie had been a visual exploration only I would have rated it around an 8.5. But the problem was that pesky story and terrible writing.
To say I am disappointed with this movie is an understatement. The story was not only poorly conceived, but predictable as well. On top of that was the blatant disregard for the collective intelligence present on the endurance.
There is so much fundamentally wrong with the progression of the story that its truly not worth listing all the flaws that are present.
Watch this movie because it has great imagery. The rest of it is really a throw away.
Splatterhouse (2010)
well done remake
As I played through this I really noticed the attention to detail that was taken in its creation. While at times it feels very much like a ride on rails with a one track story, it is revealed that your girlfriend is not the main motive of the story. Granted if you have ever played a Splatterhouse game before you know that the terror mask is not exactly a kind being. The reality being that in all the games it has an ulterior motive outside of helping you save your beloved. The game the first time around through Savage difficulty was frustrating. The monsters were balanced, but at times the horde aspect of the fights became overwhelming to the point where fighting sometimes seemed pointless. On a replay through on brutal keeping all of my abilities the game is noticeably easier despite the difficulty increase. The idea of keeping the learned abilities is a nice add to this game genre. It makes a replay more fun than normal. The survival mode is by far the most fun and challenging.
Also this game is not family friendly in any way they are not kidding about the rating. This is as close to an AO game as they will ever come without the rating. Where as the original Splatterhouse has cartooned violence and was rather harmless this game could be disturbing at times. It has a "drawn" look but that does not change the fact that monsters are having their lungs torn out, and their spines torn out through their asses.
On a side note if you are an achievement/trophy hunter and are planning on getting all the photos be prepared to play through on savage and brutal difficulties because photo shards are not available on some levels until you play through them on brutal.
Inside Man (2006)
Unfortunately disappointing
Unfortunately I found myself drifting during this movie. It was not hard to follow, in fact from within the first thirty minutes I had figured out the entire plot line, and had lost interest in what was happening on screen. The overall message of the movie is very good, but gets lost in poorly cut scenes, and scenes that are repeated. The campy music doesn't help the mood of the film either. Spike Lee attempts to recreate a campy heist movie, but only comes close to it, and then falls off the cliff before barely saving himself at the bottom. One of the major flaws in this movie is that There is too much open to the viewer to attempt to figure out for them selves after the movie ends. He leaves you nothing to figure out, and spoon feeds you everything important without even asking you if you wanted to eat first. Half the fun of a heist movie is having to figure out how they planned the job, and what their motivation was. Since you find out what their motivation was a quarter of the way through the film you lose interest in the main plot line, and stop caring about what is happening. For die hard Spike Lee fans you should see it he has his usual cuts, controversial dialog, but for the average Heist movie buff stay away, and wait for DVD its really not worth seeing in theaters.
End of the Spear (2005)
Well done, but preaches too much
I was lucky enough to be able to see a prescreening of this movie. I was not disappointed by both the acting and cinematography in this movie, but the message contained deep within its bowels turned me away. The message in this movie is not that of what the preview tells you. From what you watch in the preview you see that this is a movie about bringing peace to a waring tribe. But in all truth the movie tells more of a story of Christians coming to save the damned souls of the tribe. Unfortunately this story holds in it a disheartening message that for non-Christians will most likely disgust them. When you first realize the true nature of the story is when the main character Nate Saint says to his son after asking if they will kill the waodoni he calmly replies that they cannot because they are not ready to die, and by the end of the movie if you didn't realize it then you will realize that he is referring to them not being saved. If this undertone had not been there throughout the movie it would have been a much better piece, and would be on my A-list. All story elements aside this movie is worth seeing for the great acting, and great direction.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Prequels will never live up to the originals
As far as how many reviews there are on this site for this movie I am pretty sure mine will go unnoticed, but I must say what I feel about this horrible attempt at unifying the 6 movies. Episode three had one good part and that was Yoda until the end when he just gave up. This movies blatant use of horrible cinematography, and over use of CG rockets it into the caliber of not worth seeing. Not only did this movie ruin my day(not because of sad story either). This movie has turned the Star Wars universe into something that can be underdone unlike the first movies.
This movie was lacking in acting dialog, and decent camera work, and during a few parts I was even tempted to walk out. THe story garnered no emotion from either me nor anyone I was with. I think that anyone who thinks this movie redeems Lucas just wants to be done with Star Wars so that the catastrophes called movies can end. This movie not only covers too much of a time span, but also could have been compressed into about an hour and been much better.
If you are a true Star Wars fan like me you will gladly accept the originals as being the only ones, and read the later books instead of wasting our precious money on garbage that Lucas spewed out after a long night of drinking. Another point that this movie lacks is it blatant use of a non existent cast which reduces the ability for the actual living members to interact with. I not only felt robbed, but also felt betrayed when i saw that even in scenes of battle in structures the clones were still CG. The worst of the CG clones being that of the captain under the emporers control when ever he took off his helmet I was tempted to boo due to the fact the Lucas was too cheap to even hire a real actor for those scenes. It wouldn't have been so noticeable if the CG wasn't jerky, and didn't feel out of place.
Lastly this movie not only show cases all the for mentioned, but also contains a story compressed for time constraints. This hurt the movie a lot, and ruined the story for me. The end especially was poorly thought out, and felt like they rushed it so that Lucas could be done with this monstrosity he calls Star Wars.
