Purgatory House (2004)
A powerful movie that deals with real issues.
This movie shows depth to its characters and deals with issues that affect a lonely teen who struggles for acceptance in the aferlife. The young writer and director have clearly a great empathy and insight into the non- glitzy and very real scenes that happens when life goes wrong. It won't be liked by everyone because. Pop culture it is not. It is written and will work for the right audience, whether they relate by age or connect with harsh life events. It does what it says it does and so ought to be applauded for that. There is one other thing to add: This movie can actually educate those who have enjoyed a more protected or cosseted existence. That is if it is given a chance of course. It actually needs to be watched and not as a light eye candy movie.
Flowerman (2014)
Shockingly good.
This movie is set in the North of England. It tells us about a well balanced and loving family. They seem to have it all. Then they lost the mother who is taken. The man doing this was able to make it look like she had been having an affair. What fascinated me about it was that this was such a convincing tale told in such a way that there was no doubt as to the reality of the situation. He made it happen so easily that this should be as scary as hell, and it is for that reason. OK it is a well made movie and has tension and twists and all the things you may expect a successful movie to have. But the real scary bit is that this has happened and could happen again. There has been a high profile news story recently where the police gave up on the victim. The writers of this movie seemed to know a lot about the mindset of someone who could do such a thing. It shows how the man had power and that is what was so creepy and disturbing about it.
Mike Case in: The Big Kiss Off (2013)
Most entertaining and refreshing.
You can look around for a long time before finding something of a film noir gem like this. If you like your entertainment hot and sharp with a great deal of style then this is where to go. One thing that has struck me is that this is a genre that has received little attention form the big studios over recent years. You can image how pleased I was to find an independent producer like this getting in on the action and delivering this result. This was a refreshing movie with a budget behind it certainly but that has not been spoiled. It retains the creativity and edge of good indie cinema having not lost the unique quality that this can, but does not always bring to the screen. I'm looking forward to a sequel to this.
