I just finished listening to the book and decided to watch the movie the same day. Probably not the smartest thing for me, but I was able to fully realize what parts of the book were left out of the movie and also what parts were added. Seems to me with a popular book you shouldn't take away from the original plot when obviously there's time for it or things wouldn't be added that didn't exist in the book. Makes sense to me. I realize there's not enough time in a movie to do a book justice and that's truly the case here. None of the cast was familiar to me either. Seems like there should have been some(not all) popular young actors involved. I did like the female main character. The thing I thought was done really well was some of the special effects-especially the shadows. The romance was just lukewarm for me. I know it's young adult but given the past for these characters you would think there would be a little bit of passion. And the end. It just was and very abrupt. At least the book showed a bit more closure. Opportunity was lost here to make a good movie. Whether it was money or time constraints, some major things could have been fixed.
After being so excited for this I was more than pleasantly surprised. Everything worked for me. It was also bittersweet in that Bridget's Mark Darcy is gone now and Bridget is a widow with young children. It's been 4 years and all her besties from the other films are cheering her on to meet a man-any man-for at least a one night stand. Bridget does meet a much younger man and begins an affair with him. She also meets her son's science teacher who uses a whistle to round up all the kids before school starts. It was very Sound of Music captain seeming. But what I loved most was Hugh Grant's character coming back to be a surrogate big brother/uncle to her children. He's still a womanizer even though he's a lot older than Bridget. My one problem was Bridget's hair. Before it was over, I wanted to comb her hair myself. It was a real mess. But I loved the whole thing anyway and I highly recommend it!
My title says it all. This movie will never be up for awards on Oscar night, but then very few of my favorite movies ever are. I guarantee a movie full of action, but also one with a story. When done watching, I immediately thought that it was like watching a James Bond movie from a woman's point of view. Lots of violence and action but not so much death. I'm good with that and I do know that's not real life. I don't know about you, but I go to the movies(or watch one)to be entertained. I was entertained watching this. It perfectly fit my criteria of a way to enjoy a quiet midweek movie night at home. I should also add that it has a wonderful cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Jamie Foxx, Glen Close, and Kyle Chandler. It also leaves it open for a possible?sequel. Or not.
