The Chosen (2017)
Wonderful!
Whether you are familiar with the Bible or not this is some very beautiful storytelling and directing by Dallas Jenkins. Jonathan Roumie is absolutely brilliant as JESUS. Highly Recommended!
Thale (2012)
Weird, disjointed, but still pretty cool
I have not seen a lot of Norwegian fantasy/horror films. 'Thale' is a decent little movie. I have watched the movie in both Norwegian and English language. Neither language makes that much difference?! It's a hard story to follow BUT it is still an interesting and entertaining little movie and definitely worth a watch for fans of international horror strangeness. Pretty cool IMHO.
Enough Said (2013)
Surprisingly heartwarming, Recommended
This movie really caught me by surprise after first seeing it on HBO one night honestly by accident. I as many of other millions of people loved 'The Sopranos' and not to any small part because of James Gandolfini's performance, and all the range he displayed as an actor. Brilliant! However, there was only a hint from time to time in The Sopranos of James Gandolfini's ability to play true emotional vulnerability (which I always thought he was at his best as an actor) But, what is most surprising is that Julia Louis-Dreyfus actually gives a pretty good heartfelt dramatic performance as Gandolfini's co-star/love interest in the movie. Respect to her for sure. 'Enough Said' is a surprisingly good little movie that I think has gone mostly under the radar, but I think is definitely worth a look. Check it out. Peace.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Seriously the Worst (most boring) movie ever made
Who wrote this? Who invested in this garbage? Wonder Woman was never a good franchise from the beginning. But add Kristen Wiig as the villain and now you know we are going someplace very lousy. She is probably the worst, lousiest, most least likable actresses/person/people I can ever remember ever seeing on the big screen. Disturbing.
Wai dor lei ah yat ho (2010)
Intense, Violent & Cool
'Dream Home' has one of the most violent disturbing deaths/murders in the opening scenes I have ever seen ever in any movie. The movie deals with a lot of modern real life fears taken to their ultimate extreme. Interesting and highly recommended for fans of Asian extreme cinema.
The Hollars (2016)
Wonderful movie!
I caught this movie on some basic cable channel one rainy afternoon when I was stuck at home. What a great surprise! Very well written story/script by Jim Strouse, and very well directed by John Krasinski (who also plays the lead character very well) Richard Jenkins is also spot on brilliant with his performance as the patriarch of 'the Hollars family) Sharlto Copley is also very cool in this movie. Highly recommended!
Joshua (2002)
Wonderful!
I can understand how at first glance that 'Joshua (2002) might be dismissed as just some 'cheesy/Christian movie of the week. BUT. It is so much more. This is a good movie for any cynical/non-Christian to watch. Not that they should convert to Christianity after watching it (though I would highly recommend they give their life to Jesus Christ) I think the movie has a lot of sweetness and complexity that makes it still one of my favorite movies even in 2020. Peace to all. P.S. This is absolutely Tony Goldwyn's best film performance(perfect) ever for sure in my opinion. Also F. Murray Abraham's acting is perfect in this movie. Bottom Line: Wonderful. Peace to All. JOHN 3:16
If I Die Before I Wake (1998)
Pretty Intense, Highly Recommended
Muse Watson is most known for his work in the 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' horror franchises. But, 'IF I DIE BEFORE I WAKE' is a very under-rated horror film/movie. The film is well directed, and actually very scary. Muse Watson is also very cool in it.
Shogun Assassin (1980)
Unique and Wonderful
Tomisaburo Wakayama is amazing/awesome as 'Lone Wolf'. Brilliant Story/Movie/Film etc. I love SHOGUN ASSASSIN(1980) even in 2020. Wonderful! Pushing his cart containing his 4 year old son through some of the most violent and war torn places equipped just with his 'Samurai sword' and his own personal world view. Respect.
Lake Placid (1999)
Awesome!
First of all comparisons to 'Anaconda' is ridiculous. First of all this movie features really amazing practical in camera special GORE AND CREATURE FX by Stan Winston. Secondly the performance by Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, and also Brendan Gleeson really make this movie so cool and so enjoyable to watch multiple times. I highly recommend watching the Unrated or R rated DVD version., because most TV versions have been cut & censored a lot and not nearly as good.
Brian's Song (1971)
Classic!! Still cool in 2020
I saw Brian's Song the first time like most people in 1971 on TV. I loved it then, and I saw it the other night on PBS uninterrupted and commercial free and was impressed on how well it stands up still in 2020. James Caan's portrayal of Brian Piccolo is almost perfect as the journeyman type NFL football player who can never get out of the shadow of the great Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers, but they still manage to form a friendship, and emotional bond that transcends football, race etc. BUT, It is the acting of Billy Dee Williams that makes this the classic film it has become. BRILLIANT, WONDERFUL acting performance. My second favorite Billy Dee Williams movie is NIGHTHAWKS!
The Irrefutable Truth About Demons (2000)
New Zealand Horror
I saw this back in the day at it's original screening @ the Milan Film Festival. I remember having the feeling of 'I don't know why I like this movie so much, but I do'. 20 years later, and I still feel this way. Maybe it is 'because' of the opening goofiness of the characters in the opening scenes, maybe because the movie did have a nice amount of Gore and cool Special make-up FX, or maybe just because it is a kind a quirky/strange film that uses just a few digital FX ( i.e. super wide shot of a demon climbing up the exterior of a building) and is used just slightly, and only to support the 'in camera practical special FX. Plus it just has a nice playful tone that shifts into a more dark, and disturbing feel quite seamlessly and effectively while all the while maintaining it's quirky charm. I still like this movie a lot, and I think it has aged well for 20 years.
Deranged (1974)
Deranged (1974) Ed Gein story
Roberts Blossom's portrayal of Ezra Cobb is still impressive even in 2020 in this portrayal of one of the 'First, and MOST INFAMOUS SERIAL KILLERS OF ALL TIME.
Kaijûtô no kessen: Gojira no musuko (1967)
My favorite Godzilla movie of all time.
Admittedly I am not a huge fan of Godzilla either Japanese, or USA version. I remember back in the day when there was a huge promotion for Godzilla with Matthew Brodrick and it was still lousy, and the studios have been trying ever since. Even up to 2020 every attempt to make a big Hollywood Godzilla movie has been a bust. Unlike 'King Kong' Godzilla lacks the his facial expression (it comes down to the difference from the range of facial expressions between a Monkey & a Lizard) And the Monkey wins. That being said, I love 'Son of Godzilla' (1967). I love the use of puppetry in the creation of the 'son' and I really like the relationship Godzilla has with his son, even when his son is struggling. Cool movie. Highly recommended
Krampus (2015)
Next GREAT HORROR CHRISTMAS Movie Classic...
KRAMPUS took a few views for me to start to like/appreciate it. I think this is one of those movies that need a few (maybe 5 - 10 years) to be fully appreciated. I thought it was lousy/terrible on first viewing, but by the year 2020 I have come to appreciate it a lot more. Despite the poor writing the tone is pretty cool, and most of the Special Creature/Gore FX pretty are well done. IDKY but I have grown to like this movie over time. PLUS, also IMHO Conchata Ferrell is an awesome character actress (i.e. Two and Half Men)
The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)
Best Oscar Wilde film adaptation ever
1945 this movie was made, and it is still brilliant, and not in a "oh, I love classic cinema" i.e. Cassablanca, Wizard of Oz etc. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a unique, and surprisingly unnerving movie. George Sanders is perfect as 'the devil's advocate' character, but much credit should be given to Hurd Hatfield for his very layered performance as Dorian Gray. Plus I love the surprising/shocking (at least to me?!!) transformation of the Dorian Gray portrait....But sadly Hurd Hatfield never went on to many other great films. It is often reported that after his performance in TPODG Hurd Hatfield was so closely associated with that role(Dorian Gray) that he was just never considered for many other roles after that..... Still, Hurd Hatfield was very cool in this. Perfect I think. It is a cool movie.
Siddhartha (1972)
Very Cool
First of all how to film a Herman Hesse book/novel?? Herman Hesse was a mystical person and all of his books/novels are still mystical. That being said, I do like this movie/film adaptation of the classic book: Siddhartha. Though some of my favorite scenes from the boak are missing ( i.e. Siddhartha contemplating suicide, sleeping then waking at thr river only to find Govinda watching over him) That being said, this is still a very enjoyable film adaptation of this classic novel. The classic cinematography featuring long wide shots are wonderful, and fir the tone/theme of the story perfectly. Recommended for fans of classic literature to film (i.e. Animal Farm, Moby Dick, Of Mice and Men)
What Happened Was... (1994)
Beautiful losers and lonliness
Tom Noonan is brilliant. His direction & acting performance are excellent. Though 'lonliness' is not an uncommon theme in many films, I think this film anticipated the situation many people would find themselves in this 'brave new world'. Sweet, heartfelt, tragic and wonderful. Highly recommended for fans of obscure but very cool low budget indipendent films.
Blood Freak (1972)
CLASSIC 70's WEIRDNESS. Pretty cool!
Although 'Blood Freak' is not quite in the same league as 'Last House on Dead End Street', or 'I Drink Your Blood'...It is still a not a bad movie. Worth a look for sure.
La noche de las gaviotas (1975)
Very Atmosphereic. Pretty cool
Maybe it is not the best of the 'Blind Dead' films, but it is actually my favorite of the series for some reason. Maybe because it was the first of the BLIND DEAD series I saw. Amando de Ossorio is my favorite Spanish horror film director from this period for sure. 'Loreley's Grasp' is also a pretty cool film by Amando de Ossorio. Only for fans of the weird, strange, and atmospheric...
Las garras de Lorelei (1973)
Amando De Ossorio is famous for 'Blind Dead' series..
I do like the 'Blind Dead' series a lot. 'Night of the Seagulls' is my favorite of the series. I love that movie. BUT, I also really like 'The Loreley's Grasp' a lot also! Even in 2019 Amando De Ossorio is still an impressive filmmaker. Respect.
Zombeavers (2014)
Cool looking zombie beavers & great gore FX
I notice a lot of disrespect, and ridicule about this movie (It is to be expected, it is a movie about undead beavers!?) I think 'Zombeavers' is a surprisingly cool movie the same way the first 'Lake Placid' was unexpectedly very cool to me the first time I saw it. I also really like the look of the zombie beavers. Unique movie. Recommended for fans of the weird, gory, and fun!
Route 666 (2001)
Unique Zombie movie
I am no fan of Lou Diamond Phillips as a leading man, but he does a really good job in this unusual zombie 'road' movie. I remember being a little disappointed in my initial viewing of this movie, but after a few subsequent viewings over time I have come to appreciate the film a bit more. I actually really like the design of the dead men (zombies) who come out of 'the pavement/road' and the unique way they look. Not a bad movie at all.
Leave It to Beaver (1997)
Best TV sitcom to movie I have seen
I personally off the top of my head can't think of any other TV sitcoms (especially from the early 60's) that were made into good movies. That being said, I was absolutely surprised at how much I liked this movie while catching it by accident on TV. It takes the nostalgia of the original series, and updates it while at the same time maintaining the innocence, and simplicity of the original. It's actually kind of clever and heart warming...and I am normally pretty cynical of these type of 60's TV movie remakes (i.e. Bewitched, Flintstones etc.)
Enemy Mine (1985)
25 years later and still cool!
I saw this movie back in the day in the theatre and it was amazing. Solid convincing scenes of space warfare (even today) as the story of the long time battle between the 'Dracs' and the Humans has been fought in space for a long time, but when one of the humans (Dennis Quaid) and one of the Dracs (Louis Gossett Jr.) find themselves alone, and stranded together on a hostile planet they eventually must band together. Best Dennis Quaid movie ever!! IMHO. I like the themes (i.e. stereotypes or racism regarding preconceived ideas about another who is different) Because it was not heavy handed as most films from Hollywood and Mainstream Media today is saying about white males. Anyway, cool movie! Peace to all.
