Depp VS Heard: The Verdict (2022)
This could've accomplished something.....
Ok so first of all, we all understand how much social media has taken over the world let alone impacted perspective, storytelling and how it influences documentary storytelling. But the TikTok and YouTube clips in this mini-document did not work. If anything, it undermined the story I think was trying to be told.
Each time it would start to go somewhere, a random and unnecessary social media clip or set of clips were interjected completely dismounting you from the story. However, I did not let the tone deaf clips erase the following conclusion: AH may in fact be all the negative things JD defenders say, but he is definitely guilty. He very well may not have memory of ever hitting a woman, but he has.
So many of his mannerisms, his defense mechanisms and using his charm to disarm those in the courtroom, mirrored abusers that are not famous. Mirrored abuse I have witnessed, included the abuser trying to charm me and others surrounding his victim, so they could never believe he'd be capable of doing as much.
The Deliverance (2024)
Only one difference.....
After reading the negative reviews and then watching it, it's sad that that there is only one conclusion I can come to about the negative reviews.
The Conjuring 3, had WAY more cliches, poor storyline, stilted scenes and disjointed story, yet that got higher reviews than this.
Did this movie have cliches? Yes, but not to the point of distraction. The main characters are not pale and dusty, hence the problem with those poor reviewers.
It was chilling, dreary and spooky. There were not tons of jump scares or anything like that. It held my attention, I became invested in the characters and cheered for them.
The story was believable (not just because it was true) and showed black people saving themselves. That's the only problem I honestly think the negative reviewers have, regardless of what they wrote.
Apartment 7A (2024)
The Exact Sane Story
I wish they'd quit doing prequels just to carbon copy the story they're doing prequel to. Some of the same characters with different actors, but nothing new in the story making it even more predictable while ignoring the tropes. If you're going to do IP, still give it a new edge!
The how and why are easily defined in the first act, but over time you begin to lose connection to the heroine. A sequel done while Mia Farrow is still alive would've been more interesting as long as it wasn't a rehash of the new Exorcist. I wish it had been better considering all the talent in the film itself. But, here we are.
Hacks: Bulletproof (2024)
Brilliant
This season finale was brilliant. I admit the first two seasons were intriguing enough to string me along, but I didn't really miss the show during its hiatus. But season 3 was LIT.
Each episode was unique and not a carbon copy of the previous, you saw real growth with both characters and I did NOT see the season finale coming.
But the cameos to B stories, to random events all were just fantastic. It felt like it was more in tune and leaning into the strengths of the show. Also, the realism of working in entertainment being displayed was comforting, especially considering the current climate.
I was snapping my fingers at the end and cannot wait for Season 4. I CANNOT WAIT.
Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV: Breaking the Silence (2024)
Rushed
You could tell this was rushed and not as well thought out as previous episode. The host not only did not seem like the correct host for this sensitive material, but it appeared as if she were often reading cue cards when she was talking to Drake.
When she was interviewing in-person, a lot of her questions were frankly just poorly phrased, timed and came off as interrogative. The victims weren't the perpetrators and I was more uncomfortable by her-NOT the material.
The questions did not prompt any new revelations, nor were questions asked in any visceral way. It seemed as if the host was being presented the information and responding as if hearing it for the first time.
The Rookie: Life and Death (2021)
Killing off....not a solutuon
I cannot believe they killed off West as a solution for the actor leaving the show...not leaving a window open for him to return. I have to wonder if it was intentional due to him citing concerns about the realism of the show. This makes it harder to watch past this point.
West's storyline in season 3 was desperately overdue. And the type of "fans" annoyed by it are exactly the type of people you'd expect to be. It was almost like they thought they'd test the waters, then punish the character.
We should always be striving to create a better society and a better relationship between the police and the community. I thought this show reflected that.
Industry (2020)
A Gem in Hiding
Kind of disappointed HBO has done so little marketing for this amazing show. It's succession with likable characters, and more in-depth analysis. At times the stakes feel extremely high, and it def takes you on a rollercoaster. I've gone through the first season in 24-hours.
It grabbed me from the beginning and I loved how they opened. It put you in the same seat as the main character, and intrigued you even if you have zero interest in the financial market.
The characters grow on you, and they surprise you. Some may say they find predictability in the show, but I'm genuinely surprised more often than not.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023)
So much potential....
It started off really strong, but a sense of eerie was that you have immediately in Pet Semetary was lacking.
I honestly don't know at which point it went wrong, but I would say the lighting didn't reflect the tone. This is supposed to be a film that provides insight into a very dark time or episode for a town with a terrible secret. Yet it always looks like we're watching a happy movie because everything is so bright, even when it was dark. Not saying it should've been pitch black, but something to make it seem like a darker movie.
Just as it really starts to build, it randomly and abruptly ends. I was so confused.
Power Book IV: Force: Dead Reckoning (2023)
Brilliant
The writing is brilliant for this show. Some may say it's predictable, I don't believe so, but regardless the performances of the cast is powerful nonetheless. I love this show.
So many of the character arcs surprise me (but make sense) and how the storylines intertwine is brilliant and makes me realize how poorly I keep track in my own head.
Each episode this season has escalated with each episode, one-episode feels like two because so much is going on, but you're still able to follow. I've become attached to each of the characters for different reasons.
If you hate someone on the show? You REALLY hate them lol.
Outlander: Where the Waters Meet (2023)
Why must the storylines repeat....
How many times will they repeat the storyline of Claire getting kidnapped? How does she still put herself constantly in a situation guaranteed to end with her being kidnapped? Like HOW?
Along with the other B and C storylines that never go anywhere.... I always start to lose interest in the "story" when they literally turn the plot into what happens after Claire gets kidnapped. I understand that is how it was for women back in this time period....but since this story already has some type of magic attached to main plot of the story....could we axe that from happening every six episodes or less?
Deadloch (2023)
Loved it. LOVED IT.
Jesus, if this isn't your type of comedy don't watch it. I loved every second of it and do not understand the ridiculous reasons why people don't love it. But, that being said: the puns, the actors chemistry, the arcs and I honestly didn't guess who the killer was until the very end.
I loved seeing so many actresses from Wentworth which only further demonstrated these actresses range. I also feel like a range of different characters were written, especially the female characters. It was the type of show you'd wish as an actor to be lucky enough to get cast in. I really
hope they do a sequel series.
Superman & Lois: Pilot (2021)
Unsure
What I loved about this is also what made me unsure about the first episode. It's obvious that a larger budget was dedicated to the pilot of this episode than the entirety of Supergirl and that bothers me. It's even more disturbing that they pretend as if she doesn't exist, and this is an worn-out record that I'm tired of listening it.
I get wanting to establish the series as its own, but hasn't DC learned the invaluable lesson of the strength in the universe? I could maybe look past ignoring the rest of the universe. But ignoring his cousin as it has been done in literally every single previous Superman installment? I'm over it.
