Son of Zorn (2016–2017)
5/10
Good at times but for the wrong reasons
17 December 2020
This show almost got six stars from me because it was in some ways pure genius and prophetic - but only got a 5 because it was accidental on the creators part. Zorn is symbolic of the death of the 80s, American masculinity, and freedom. In it's place we have the rise of PC culture and feminization of manhood. The problem I had with this is that it was obvious that the creators were on the side of "woke" culture. They mocked what many of Boomers would see as something wonderful - a time before everyone turned into snowflakes that were always getting their panties in bunch. The rise of the SJW over the traditional warrior. It made the show obnoxious and depressing. The death of He Man is not a happy topic for those of us who loved the 80s.

The humor in the show was there... at times. Sometimes pretty funny, but the really good laughs were drowned out in the awkward moments and preaching the virtues of the brave new world of Karens. It did not catch my interest for long.

Umm.... Hmmm

Take a movie with a poor lead actress, mundane writing, a boring bad gal, a plot twist - kinda, and then make it all WOKE by adding a lesbian couple. That's this movie, enjoy.

Iron Fist (2017–2018)
6/10
The worst of the four
21 March 2017
I LOVED Daredevil, I truly enjoyed Jessica Jones, I liked Luke Cage a lot, but this... Iron Fist is by far the weakest of the four. Why: 1) The main character is a crappy actor. Some of his emotional scenes look more like a cross between sudden abdominal cramping mixed with the William Shatner school of ham acting. 2) The story was kind of dull and the fight scenes were not nearly as intense as the scenes from DareDevil. 3) The martial arts seemed weak, the movements of the characters were awkward, and all those guns- all handled by bad guys who went to Stormtrooper school to learn how to shoot. 4) The over the top moralizing, angsty BS. We must not kill, but we wants to, no, you must not, but we wants to. It got tiring and really did not work mixed with our number 1 actor (see 1st point). 5) This show really missed hitting the sweet spot of creating real suspension of belief. Not because the guy's fist would make nice night lights once in while, but many of the character interactions. Clair always seemed out of place and did not fit well. Her motivations for joining the dynamic duo on their escapades did not work.

Is it worth watching, ya, it's still watchable, but do not expect even close to the same level of head games you get with Jessica Jones or the intensity and immersion you will find with DareDevil. Those shows had really good actors and far more interesting plot.

The Expanse (2015–2022)
8/10
Very good, but few warts.
30 May 2016
This show is good and SciFi should be commended for bringing it to the screen (much better than some of their other endeavors). The acting is descent, the writing is good, and the story is very engaging. The show is also getting stronger as the episodes progress and the actors start to feel more comfortable in their roles. I really hope this gets green lighted for a second season.

Now for the warts. Not deal breakers, but these were "unforced errors" and the producers could have easily done better. 1) This is hard SciFi, but misses many things. Like going down a shaft on Eros using a ladder. Sorry, the gravity would be so low on Eros that jumping down a 200 ft shaft would be no big deal. 2) The chronic water shortages on Ceres and other belt stations. Why? Where does all the water shipped in go? Sure very small amounts will be lost do to airlock usage, but once you have water on a station it does not go anywhere. 3) Weak, brittle boned, belter folks. Sorry, again this is far enough in the future that I really really doubt that they would not have solved such low G medical issues. 4) Where is the Transhuman future? The future in the series feels more "primative" than expected. Humans would be for more advanced genetically and cybernectically than what we see here. Budget would put some constraints on this, but they still could have made the future more like - the future. 5) Where are the robots? See #4 - too primitive. 6) Finally, I think it very interesting to see Mormons as part of the setting. Sadly, as a Mormon, I can say that who ever is writing them in does not get Mormons. Mormons on the show do not "feel" like Mormons (sorry this is hard to describe). A Jewish friend once told me only Jews really get Jews, and I said the same is true for Mormons. So, cool to include Mormons as part of the story and one of the cultures, but could you please get an active Mormon to help you write them into the story?

Agent Carter (2015–2016)
8/10
Close to perfect
7 March 2016
Agent Carter is a great flashback to the cinema adventure movies of the 30s and 40s with the special effects of 2015. The acting is usually good and the action well done (most of the time). Plots are interesting with many subplots and conspiracies to add more tension but it is not over the top dark and moody.

Why only 8 stars? Because they are starting to add too much political correctness to the show. The last thing I want is one more show where the writers decide that they must become SJW and preach the cause. If it were more subtitle, and less obvious, that would be fine. Nope. It is getting louder and more beat you over the head. Initially it was fine showing how agent Carter had to deal with a chauvinistic society and even used it to her advantage. Fit right in. Without adding spoilers though it is now turning the 1940s into a PC whipping boy.

Sorry the show works better when it focuses on the positives of that society instead of the negatives. This is one of the reasons Capt. America did so well because he represented what was good about America. Go back to that, sure you can show that it was not perfect - Agent Carter has to deal with that daily, but don't loose site of what makes a show in this time period so awesome.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow (2016–2022)
5/10
Dr Who with super heroes - I wish
6 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This show could be soooo much cooler. I think the developers were trying to go for an "American" Dr. Who. They even hired Arthur Darvil to play "Rip Hunter" (manly name for a wimpy guy) to play the Capt. of the time ship. The time ship is bigger on the inside than the outside though it does not look like a police box. The Doct... I mean the Captain's companions are a group of reject heroes and anti heroes that decide to go with the Capt. to save the world from Vandal Savage, an immortal.

Where does the show fail. Acting is okay with a few of the actors but gets overshadowed by some of the poorer actors that they play next too. With time as each gets used to playing their character that may improve.

The plots. Oh those terrible, contrived, poorly thought out plots. The way the characters are forced to "solve" the problems that face them is almost cringe worthy. I find myself saying, "wait, this is stupid why don't they just...." Forced plots are no fun to sit through and are the results of lazy writers not being able to match the abilities of the characters with the problems that they face. Thus plot holes and characters ignoring the obvious abound in the series. With Scooby Doo I can understand why they are always splitting up to go find the ghost, but when this happens all the time in this series causing all sorts of problems that could have easily been avoided, it grates.

Finally the writing and character relationships. Why the crew has not thrown the Captain out an airlock is beyond me. Some of the relationships seem almost as forced as the plots. The dialog needs more cleverness and wit. Perhaps if they could track down some of the writers for Doctor Who we could see a positive change.

Supergirl (2015–2021)
3/10
The Yin Yang of Supergirl
25 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I really want to like this show. It has some great moments and a likable lead. That's the good side, now for the darkside:

1) Please, please, please try to keep the plot holes from multiplying like rabbits on a diet of Viagra. Example: the first episode where Supergirl meets her evil aunt, she thinks she is her mother, but learns in a bit of "evil guy dialog" that she is her aunt that she was never told about. A few episodes later we find out that Kara and her aunt were once the best of buds... what the Hell.

2)Preach it baby. This show is very much in tune with women rule and boys drool, especially white boys. ALL the major villains are white guys full of "white privilege". General Lang, Mr. Lords, Nom(the real Kryptonian villain as his wife - Kara's aunt - is really a good person inside), the Trickster, all evil white guys. The heroes are selected from a college course on women and minority studies. I have no problem with heroes being of whatever color or gender. I do have a problem when the show gets preachy about how white guys are evil and stacks the deck in such a way that it is painfully obvious. The only sympathetic white guy is a nerd and even with that his dad is evil.

3) Too much suspension of belief. Not the lasers coming out of Supergirl's eyes. The fact that she would love her job working for Han Solo's wife (Flockart)who plays an utterly detestable character who has the heart of the Grinch, Donald Trump's narcissism and Hillary Clinton's bitchy I can do no wrong attitude. Sometimes it is funny how over the top she plays the role, reminds me of Shatner's acting skills.

4) Why are they ruining the role of Jimmy Olsen? In NO universe is Jimmy a highly confident tall muscely black man. Where is the awkward red head with freckles. I'm sure they did this because this show is more concerned with appeasing the PC gods (see #2). Sad that they could not be a bit truer to the source material.

Will I keep watching the show, maybe. I do get tired of the disjointed plots and every show learning about how evil white guys are, but it does at times redeem itself. They better move their low bar a little higher and soon.

The Flash (1990–1991)
7/10
Better then the new series - most of the time
25 February 2016
It was great to find this series again as I missed many of the original episodes when they came out. This series is great in that it has more heart than the new series. The special effects are, at times, better than the CGI intensive new episode. It is refreshing to see the Flash speed pummel an adversary, old Flash is more buff an less wimpy/whinny then new Flash. Old Flash is more action and less angsty than new Flash.

The new series does have some better villains and Cisco's humor is great. It is interesting to see that the main characters from the first series are given roles in this series. I like both, but the old one has the edge!
