Oh God, this movie. It's such avant-garde art. I love it. I love Gary Oldman, of course. He is the obviously shining star of this film. When he starts playing the piano and singing, I truly was mesmerized by his beauty and talent.
Bravo, I'm glad George Harrison produced this trippy piece of art. The director has a real concept of what surrealism can bring to a film. Just an absolute masterpiece. It's like an acid trip. Not sure what is real or what is implied. It's a wild ride!
Gary Oldman is my favorite actor. He just belongs in the spotlight of every film he is in. This film shows how well he has mastered his craft. 10/10.

The story, as a whole, works. The cinematography is excellent, of course. But the drawn out story is exactly that...boring. I found myself struggling to continue to watch this through to the end. The lead is well acted but you don't end up rooting for him as you do with the movie version with Matt Damon as the protagonist. Dakota fanning was not well cast in this mini series. She is a great actress and I like her work, but she was not a good fit as Marge. She was way too cold and emotionally lacking, vapid, almost. This is prompting me to read the books. I love the tales by Patricia Highsmith so much in all their big screen adaptations, aside from this one. This mini series was a major disappointment for me. I was excited for it, too. Bummer. 5/10. My rating would be lower except the director did a superb job with the cinematography, as mentioned.
All the negative reviews must be from people who don't like change! Agreed, it's way different than the classic '90s black beauty, but once you get past that it, is a darling film. I absolutely love black beauty, although she is not a mustang...I was confused by this. I like the fact that it was a female led cast. The scenery was breathtaking, I love out west and I love Mr. Manly's New York ranch. Very warm and fuzzy feelings for me as I used to have my own female quarterhorse when I lived with my mom on her ranch! This movie is adorable, the horses are so gorgeous they literally steal the show, especially black beauty! Watch this movie if you love horses!
