1883 (2021)
Perfect in many ways. better than Yellowstone
Simply loved it. The writing, the acting, the music, the plot, the scenography... I can't find anything that I do not like about 1883. In fact I like it way better than Yellowstone even though I watched the entire 5 seasons. It feels so real, like peeking into history. Reminded me both of Dances with wolves and Unforgiven but it has its own personality and gripping plot. Isabel May is simply outstanding and could have not been better cast. Also Faith Hill and Tim McGraw kill it. They are natural born actors at least for westerns. And to wrap it up, Sam Elliott as the voice of a different generation and the opposite end of Isabel May: light vs darkness, new vs old, life vs death, future vs past. Wish I could watch it again as if it was the first time.
Rebel Ridge (2024)
Badly written and frustrating plot but something in it is promising
I thought it would deliver a very interesting and atypical story and in the end it is a simple plot written in a way that you often get lost and is not original at all. We found ourselves rewatching several scenes because the scrip made no sense. I even thought at some point that it had been written by AI.
On the plus side, the atmosphere is very well achieved and the acting is good too. The main character has something that makes you want to keep watching. And despite the flaws in the writting the movie feels like it can deliver more than it actually does. Left us frustrated for having lost 2 hours to an ending that was just like any other. It could have been much better.
Casual Day (2007)
Entertaining, well written, well performed. Great Spanish movie
I truly enjoyed watching Casual Day. Great acting, great script and good rhythm, which makes it a very nice watch. The story is centered upon a group of people working for a large multinational company who go for a company week-end away. It describes the ambitions, miseries and injustices that affect the workers of the company from many different perspectives. The negative side is that it is maybe excessively pessimistic, at the risk of being bias. However, one can imagine that there are companies where people are treated unfairly, with little humanity and where people feel deeply miserable but nonetheless trapped. On the good side, actors are at their very best and the plot is truly interesting.
