Miss Representation (2011)
Amazing... Eye opening
I just wanted to write a response to the Review floating around from TVGUY that said it was "OK". First off, just because you're showing images of sexualized women, doesn't mean it's going against what the film is for. THEY'RE showing you the exact images that are being consumed by the masses, and THEN backing it up with evidence of how detrimental it is to women and men. If you don't want your girl seeing it in the context of it being negative then that's your prerogative; but at least they aren't glamorizing it... you think your little girl won't see it somewhere else? It's basically PLASTERED in our minds.
This was a great movie... it broke down the stereotypes and misogyny in the industry and really dissects the machine that controls the masses; media. Not only does it focus on Women's oppression, but also on the monopoly that the media has become... it's quite scary how controlling and how much dominance this institution has on the masses and consequently the public realm and government. This is no man hating by any means, they even draw the connections on how men are oppressed because of the oppression of women. EVERYONE should watch this... truly enlightening. If you think misogyny and female oppression is the only thing the Machine pushing and is the only problem going on then you're wrong... Oppression and violence will not be rid of in societies until we begin to hold the media and said institutions accountable. Anything corporations get a hold of turns into complete crap. Start thinking with your own minds, maybe then will you truly live a happy life and provide a safe place for both daughters AND sons.
Catwoman (2004)
Looking back...
I was watching this movie last night and thought to myself, What the heck were people and critics thinking? This movie deserved way more than it got. It was definitely underrated and compared to the horrible s*** coming out today, this is AMAZING. Now, right from the start people were mad with how the movie was coming along. The fact that this Catwoman was not the Selena Kyle from the comics or movies. The fact that it wasn't set in Gotham. Get over it, please. It's a completely different film! Judge it on its own merits. Yeah, it was cheesy and campy. That doesn't mean it was bad. The eighties was all camp. That didn't stop people from going and enjoying movies. The acting was great, I thought. Halle did a great job portraying the very vulnerable Patience and was able to transform this fragile character into a stronger, sassier Catwoman. Yeah, her prancing around, eating tuna, and performing acrobatic moves isn't what Catwoman is supposed to do. But this is a completely different story. She has talents that are cat-like. Again, judge this on its own. The supporting cast is great as well. Her best friend, and villain Sharon Stone are strong supporting characters. The action sequences are a pleasure to look at and the film itself has a lot of style. The soundtrack is a nice touch, adding an urban sense to the film. The cinematography is great and it is obvious at times that it is CGI, but done very well. Yeah, it could've been more serious and the script better written. But we got a movie that entertains. It is NOTHING like the critics say. And in my opinion, a lot of the audience gave it such a low rating solely on what someone else said, without giving it a chance. The movie was made to entertain, and it delivered. Give it a chance, and you'll find that it is not as bad as people make it out to be.
The Best Years (2007)
The BEST show!
Wow. I cannot believe that The N canceled this show! The characters in the show were amazingly developed and the drama was real. All of the cast definitely played their roles well. Many of the characters were likable and there was always a feeling of relativity to at least one character. The N truly made a mistake in saying this show non demographic. It's really disappointing that this gem was scratched off the board before even giving it a decent run. Hopefully this doesn't happen to Degrassi or South of Nowhere. They better come out with a DVD for the series. Good luck to the cast. We miss you guys!
BRING THE SHOW BACK!
Denied (2004)
A Great Story
I'm giving this an eight solely because of the horrible lighting and horrible audio. The rest is great. Now, this is one of my first gay cinema pictures. The plot caught my attention. I picked the movie up and brought it home. What I liked about this film was the realism it contained. There are no resolutions and there is conflict many times. People do really fall in love and sometimes, this love isn't enough to save them. In the end, nothing is solved. There are hints of the relationship the two friends had, but never a definite answer. Both men were very attractive and I think, did a very well job. The production was awful. Horrible lighting and muffled sound. The editing could've been much better, but not as bad as the lighting and sound. Had that been upgraded, the movie would've only improved. Very effective. I recommend it, just turn the volume 110% percent and watch the movie in the dark. Also, the intimate scenes could've been a little longer. It felt like the director was afraid of getting into it. I'm not necessarily saying sex just intimacy in general. It would've made the ending much more emotional. Overall not bad.
Pulse (2006)
Damn Good
I went to see this movie yesterday with a couple of friends. Lets start off by saying this was a movie that Dimension (studio that should not make horror movies) had cut down over 30 minutes of footage to make it pg-13 which supposedly equals more money. Anyway the movie was actually well done. The atmosphere was really dark, the lighting really good, make-up, and visuals were awesome. If you like the Ring or the Grudge, you should definitely watch this. If you like gore, maybe this isn't your thing. I'm into the more atmospheric, visual, and sound of a movie, so this thing freaked me out. Don't pass it up, though. I can't wait for a directors cut when it comes out on DVD. To summarize it up, I enjoyed it, give it a chance. Oh and props to Kristen Bell and Christina Millian. They did a pretty damn good job in this movie.
Final Destination 3 (2006)
Third's a Charm!
What do I start off saying? I was super excited when I heard about this sequel. This movie was awesome. It was great that the duo came back to do the final movie. Wong and Morgan did an awesome job. The writing was awesome and sometimes witty (EX. The hardware store). They knew where to push the serious and comedic levels in this movie. The beginning, like the rest, start off as a premonition. This one, let me tell you was the best. It grabbed on to you and didn't let you go. The characters were well developed and I actually didn't want some of them to die at all. The death scenes were really cool and fresh. Another thing that this movie succeeded in was capturing the essence of death, It's mysterious and it's a "force", it's out there. It caught the suspense and horror that the teens were feeling, uncertainty and the feeling that you can't control what will happen to you. If you're a Final Destination fan you should definitely see it! Even a horror-thriller fan should go see this. Definitely a must see. Go watch!
The Omen (2006)
Stylish and Atmospheric
I thought this movie was going to be bad.
Like really bad. Nothing can beat the original. But... to tell you the truth... I felt like it was almost to the point of doing so. This was more of a thriller/suspense movie than horror.
The only problem with this movie was that it stayed to loyal to the original and didn't add in much of its own touch. It wasn't bad, but what made people scared in the original doesn't have the same effect on us today. It did do its job and it did the original much justice. Liev Schreiber does a good job. He shows a more sentimental side.
I was on the edge of my seat the whole time even though I've seen the original but I'd forgotten a lot of little things. Julia Stiles starts off a little stale but she soon starts to take a serious toll and proves she can act very well. Damien (seamus) is pretty good. He got on my nerves a little, but he's one scary little bastard.
All in all, I enjoyed this movie. It's stylish, loyal to the remake (too loyal ),gets intense, and the death scenes were very well done. I do suggest it more to people who haven't seen the original, because since it stays so close, it's pretty much the same. Religious people beware!
Remember this, it's much more of an effective thriller than horror. And it's a lot more graphic than the original. Sit tight, grab on, and enjoy it.
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Wasc
I bought the DVD yesterday and watched it. I thought the movie was pretty average when a saw it early 2006. I bought it and watched it. I really liked it much more. Knowing and understanding what this movie wanted to convey, I got much more out of it. I don't like the fact that this movie was made out and thought of to be a horror movie when it first came out. It's a psychological thriller. THRILLER. So don't expect the gore blood n' guts stuff. It isn't a slasher. Sure, it was Pg-13 and limited but it was still good. There were some deaths and a little bit of blood here and there. A lot of people thought it was stupid because they didn't find out who the killer was. Hence the name it got...when a stranger calls. What the movie was trying to convey was imagination and mind tricks. When we're alone or scared, we imagine things that scare the hell out of us sometimes. Our mind can be the worst at times. This movie is so real and that's what I like. I didn't even know who Camilla was until this movie and she does a good job. She conveys the average teenager very, VERY well. Her expressions were good as well, and heightened the tension in the movie. I thought it was cool what the director/writers did. They expanded the first 20 minutes of the original and made it into a feature film. The film was well shot and the lighting was wonderful. The movie also does something different. The HOUSE is an actual CHARACTER. It's beautiful and safe looking during the day, but at night it's hostile, uninviting, causing uncertainty and tension, not knowing what was coming. The ending could've been better and lasted longer, like maybe him coming after her again after he escapes, but nonetheless I liked the ending, kind of like CARRIE style. Hell, I would be traumatized too!! This was a pretty good movie, just watch it with an open mind and know that it's a THRILLER, and NOT HORROR, even more so, its more like a PSYCHOLOGICAL thriller. It kind of reminded me of last years Red-eye which I enjoyed very much as well. Watch this movie loud, the score was great and it had a great impact in the movie. Hopefully this helped.
Silent Hill (2006)
What a....
Great movie. I mean this is just such a great movie. Wow. One thing I have to say is that the trailer deceives a little bit. There was this one couple after the movie that said this was "horrible, nothing like the trailer." That's not true, it's twisted, sick, and horrifying. The trailer doesn't show that there are other people living in the town and that they are an essential part of the plot and movie. The movie has great sounds, great special effects. It's twisted... and although throughout the movie there isn't much gore...during the climax of the movie, there so much, almost too much, not Hostel type gore, but the gore that tends to build up tension. The pyramid is really cool to see in this movie. There were a lot of people that didn't get the movie, I did, even though a briefly played it. Just pay attention, especially during the flashbacks because the story unravels pretty fast. The action is great and the movie is filled with atmosphere. I do have to say though, the dialog did get a little thin in some places when Rose said it was going to be OK but there were all these horrible things going on right in front of her and her daughter. I found that was kind of funny. The acting was surprisingly good. The actors help built up tension. The movie also established a great sense of claustrophobia. The ending is quite a surprise if you aren't familiar with the game, which I'm Not. *Spoilers* Some people as well as me, did not get the ending. They manage to get away from the evils of silent hill (Rose and Sharon) and once they are out everything's still foggy. They get to their house and it's all drenched in fog. Then it flashes to her husband and it's all bright. They still weren't in their "reality", they were still in the silent hill world. The husband felt her presence and looked to where Sharon was sitting in her world. He felt her there, but he couldn't see, her went to close the door because it had been opened by the "wind". Then the shot is outside the house and some sad music plays. Kind of Depressing. All in all this was a terrific movie. I highly recommend it and can't wait for a sequel.
Elektra (2005)
Good movie
I'm going to have to disagree with the critics on this one.I can't believe that Elektra got such a bad score. I mean at least a high six for god sakes. This movie was a great action movie and Garner showed her physical abilities in this movie. The dialogue was a bit crisp sometimes and got a little thin with the usual martial arts "You can do it" and that type of inspiring stuff. The movie, overall, is very entertaining and the acting is good. There were a lot of great special effects. The editing was OK. There were complaints on how the main guy died... I thought the death could've been more elaborate and more vengeful. The story isn't bad at all. I guess it's just a matter of taste, if you like movies that are closer to the reality side, go watch another movie, if you're open to things that aren't really tied in with what's real, you might like this. It's action packed and plot-wise, well it's actually not that bad. Elektra is lost in morality and doesn't know who she is, by the ending she finds herself again... with the help of people along the way. The little love thing they had going, i don't know about that, there was hardly any chemistry although both actors were capable. The movie was well done and is good enough for me to be expecting a sequel, just keep in mind, this is more of the definition of Elektra and finding who she is. Maybe, in the next movie, if there is one, there'll be more sense of reality to it. Have fun with it.
Stay Alive (2006)
it was good.
First off, this movie was definitely cut to be pg-13. Some of the scenes were really short and didn't make sense. Gamers will definitely like this one. The movie isn't your pg-13 generic movie. Like most horror films this has a little character development. This movie was good for what it was, a teen horror popcorn movie. Don't expect it to be Oscar worthy. It delivered what it was supposed to, which was entertainment and some scares. The opening scene keeps you on your toes and from then on. The movie had a lot of great scares that weren't the usual gore. It kind of shows that a horror movie can deliver without the gore. There was some blood which did the movie well. The characters are somewhat developed, and develop throughout the movie until... its game over. Overall, the movie was a good horror movie. I wasn't expecting much, but I got much more. The movie is creative with what it has and the special affects are pretty good. If you're a gamer, you should watch it. If you like horror, and don't mind it being kiddy, go for it. This movie kept my attention, and for me, that's important.
The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
Wow.
Wow. This movie is phenomenal. This is how movie remakes should definitely be done!!! Aja is... wow... he's so good. So the movie starts off with the Carters going on a trip to California. They want to find out if there is a shortcut so they stop at a gas station and ask for directions. The merchant tells them to follow a certain road, they do. The road to hell...So, anyway. They are on the road and don't see the spikes on the road. Their wheels get severed, but luckily they have a trailer home. They decide to wait it out. I don't want to say anything else. But this is when it gets really intense. I do admit, the pacing was a little to fast for the scenes to come, but nonetheless, it was well done! This movie made me feel things I've never felt. Claustrophobia, Anxiety, Suspense, Dread, Aw. I shuddered at some of the scenes. There was some drama in the movie, which helps the audience catch its breath, but right after we go back in to another fright-fest. The characters are well developed, so, that you actually care for them. People were clapping when some of the scenes were going on because it was so intense! Wow. Great job Aja, also kudos to the makeup!!! well done! This movie sets a high mark for all the upcoming remakes that will be done. Great movie! 9/10 on my list.
