Django Unchained (2012)
The Perfect Movie
For anyone who isn't much into cinema, I would recommend watching Django Unchained and you will fall in love with films forever.
This film is a classic western full of drama, suspense and tension with a tremendously unpredictable plot but with a sense of realism taken into consideration.
I believe it would be hard to dislike this masterpiece as it has it all: action, adventure and even a sense of romance and the occasional humour.
The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
A Unique and Original Classic
TGBH is one of my favourite films ever.
It's aesthetic is visually pleasing and colourful which makes every scene a joy to watch. Furthermore, when paired with the very fun score from Desplat it gives even the most quirky scene a hint of suspense and tension (such as Deputy Kovac's run from Jopling).
Its dark tongue in cheek humour is perfectly timed and not too overdone.
The plot is very complicated but certainly not impossible to understand, however this wonderful film is one to entertain, rather than to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat; therefore I would recommend to a first-timer to try and enjoy it rather than to try and keep up and figure out the story.
It is a shame that Wes Anderson did not receive any Academy Awards for this masterpiece.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Simple
Mad Max: Fury Road did not appeal to me in the slightest.
I chose to watch this film as it featured the great Tom Hardy and had a decent 8.1 IMDb rating but was disappointed.
The plot was basic and simple - driving through the desert for 2+ hours. This bored me and I was waiting for the movie to end.
I also believed that the attempts to achieve style were flawed - such as the pointless guitarist (?).
This is just my opinion as I am aware many people love this film, but personally I just didn't get it.
3 Idiots (2009)
Had Potential but Lacked Execution
Unlike many other Bollywood movies, 3 Idiots was enjoyable - at some points.
Firstly, the film provides a useful message - do what you love rather than what someone else thinks you should do. It also has a clever and quite unpredictable plot which makes the film certainly watchable.
However, the reason for this film's downfall is due to its comedic aspect. The jokes and comedy to this film is super immature and childish and wouldn't make 99% of adults laugh. I genuinely believe that if this film had little to no comedic aspects, or at least a less childish comedic aspect, and was a serious film it could be comparable to Good Will Hunting.
Had the potential to be a global success but only succeeded domestically.
Bãhubali: The Beginning (2015)
Rubbish
Genuinely the worst film I've ever seen.
Its pacing is way too fast to the point where every scene is a fight scene and there is no suspense at all because it is so predictable.
Also completely unrealistic - it's literally laughable.
Wouldn't recommend this film to anyone because it is so rubbish, and I am astonished of its 8.1 IMDb rating.
Prisoners (2013)
First Watched it When I was 13 - Scared me to Death
This psychological crime thriller is one of the best out there in terms of gripping the audience. I watched it when I was 13 with a friend of mine after his step-dad recommended it. It freaked the hell out of me and left me with nightmares for weeks, simply due to the performances of Paul Dano, as the quiet and shy man-child and David Dastmalchian, as the creepy and slightly eerie red herring.
Hugh Jackman played an excellent part showing the quick change from sane to distressed in few scenes after his child was kidnapped, and Jake Gyllenhaal perfected his role as a determined but stressed detective; it's a shame he wasn't Oscar nominated.
I was hooked from minute one and was on the edge of my seat for the remainder of the film in order to find out the perpetrator.
This film is very thoroughly thought through and is not too obvious nor too vague and will keep you watching.
I only gave it an 8 rating rather than a 9 or 10 due to some minor plot holes - firstly, what was the 'maze' all about? And why was David Dastmalchian's character there, other than for distracting the viewer from the actual criminal?
Taxi Driver (1976)
Didn't do it for Me - De Niro's Performance is the Only Real Highlight
As much as I love Scorsese, Taxi Driver did not appeal to me.
For me the film was quite dull and boring with little suspense, drama and extremely slow pacing.
I'm intrigued to know why this film was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, as well as its ongoing rave as a classic.
Perhaps I missed the point of the movie, as I was waiting it to end from half way through.
However I did notice some positives. Firstly it is clear, De Niro's performance as a troubled veteran-turned-taxi driver was masterful, and he showed a clear character development during the film. Another positive for me is the aesthetics of New York, as its darker sides are shown. Lastly the score was one that stood out for me, with relaxing music in scenes of driving.
6/10 - a good effort, but too much caution over ensuring not too quick pacing.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Leaves the Viewer Thinking for Weeks on End
2001: A Space Odyssey is my favourite film of all time for simply one reason: the ending. Kubrick's ambiguous finish to this suspenseful trip will leave you debating and theorising its purpose for a long time.
Further positive aspects include its eerie score and music throughout (notably at the beginning), the visually pleasing aesthetic, and contrastingly the use of silence to truly prove that "no one can hear you scream in space."
I strongly recommend watching this film in a dark room with no distractions in order to achieve the full cinematic experience, and hopefully it will not disappoint.
