Popeye (1980)
"Cause the good always win's over the bad"
It's been at least 35 years since I've watched this movie, and I watched it tonight.
I loved it as a kid. I even had the soundtrack on vinyl. I know... The songs aren't that great but... (What do you want? I was 12)
It's also a little long for what it is but...
We grew up watching Popeye, and this movie was done the right way at the right time.
Williams was perfect for Popeye. At the time, we were thinking that it was crazy that "Mork from Ork" was going to be Popeye.
Who could do it now? Ryan Gosling? No.
Tomb Hanks? Errrrr. Maybe.
But Williams did an incredibly wonderful job bring a cartoon character to life, and getting Ray Walston to play his father was a huge score.
Just like Paul Dooley (Enabran Tain) who I also respect as an actor, as Wimpy
The set they built for the town was something else. It was remarkable. Absolutely beautiful.
But it's Shelly.
Shelly Duvall that makes this movie...
I know, her performance in "The Shining" was spectacular. But I also believe that her role as Olvie Oyl was the roll she was born to play.
I can't think of anyone who could have done it better. No one. Her incredibly nuanced peformance was absolutely wondeful.
She was magnificent.
Next time you watch this with your kids, just watch and pay attention to Shelly's performance, every little thing she does, and you'll know what I mean.
Absolute magic.
So eat your spinach! (Full disclosure, I hate spinach.)
Dune: Part One (2021)
Third time's the charm?
This is the third adaptation I've seen, and they still can't get it right. The 2000 mini series is still the closest to come to it yet. I guess we'll see if part 2 doesn't wreck it all.
Star Trek (2009)
Uhura
Uhura was a babe. I only say that because my review was too short. Abrams didn't understand Uhura or Spock. Or Star Trek. Or A Star Wars. But he did destroy two epic sci-fi franchises in the span of a few years.. Good going stupid.
Haunt (2019)
Tedious
This movie is a tedious, tedious, tedious, piece of crap.
Black Water (2018)
I would have given this a 5 but...
I kinda like the soundtrack.
That submarine, it sure was roomy.
Spring Break (1983)
I should hate this movie...
...but I don't. Its one of those "what was the 80's like" movies, and you tell people to watch this one. It's a no brainer romp with musical numbers thrown in for the this story line.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Inner Light (1992)
Go Carefully
I'm a DS9 guy. I love DS9. And I like all the other series of course. But "Inner Light" is quite possible the best Trek episode there is. Ever. You might disagree, and we could argue about it, but you'd lose. Heh Heh.
Kidding aside, it's not only good Trek, what you want Trek to be, but it's great sci-fi. And beyond Trek, it's good television.
Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)
Hellraiser III
I used to think that Hellraiser III was the worst. The. Worst. But after watching IV-X this Halloween, I have to admit that III is cinematic gold in comparison. Gold I tell ya! Hellraiser needs to no longer be raised. Let. It. Go. Unraised.
Hellraiser: Inferno (2000)
WTF
It's like the writers and director had never seen a Hellraiser movie before.
Red Dawn (1984)
600 Thousand Scarecrows
Granted, it may not be the best movie ever, but it is one of the movies that is an epitome of 80's action films. A great look into the era, ideals and fantasy of action films of the times.
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970)
This is...
... just terrible.
And when a movie spends the last few minutes explaining to me what just happened, it's just salt in the wound.
Enterprise: Damage (2004)
Archer is the Worst
This was the episode when I knew for sure that I hated Archer, and the Vulcans were right, he wasn't ready for command.
By doing "what he had too" he was no better than the Xindi.
Friday the 13th: The Series: Bottle of Dreams (1988)
Clip Show
Clip shows are a slap in the face to true fans of a series. Especially when it's a season finale.
Planet of the Apes: The Trap (1974)
Best episode in the series.
The ruins of the city. The arguments between Urko and Burke. The buried subway. A concrete rubble backlot. It's simply the best episode.
Hawaii Five-O: Little Girl Blue (1973)
The epitome of lazy TV production
Most of the footage comes from the episode "...And I Want Some Candy and a Gun That Shoots" I find that to be lazy and a slap in the face to fans of the series. (Even if it was 46 years ago)
Manifest: Estimated Time of Departure (2019)
The Bullet
Hopefully the bullet will ricochet around the room and get Micheala, Jared and Zeke all at once, then hover around the room waiting for Ben and Grace.
Because the show runners used a generic series checklist to create this show.
"We gotta have this." "We gotta have that."
I think the show creators probably owe me money.
