Padayappa (1999)
The best of Rajini
I was utterly disappointed after looking at the rating of the movie - 5 - who are those @#$% who rated this movie. I would give it a straight 10. This was a better movie compared to Chandramukhi (and of course BABA).
Here the director has given Rajini ample scope to perform in all three stages of the hero's life. His style, stunts and comedy in the first half. His responsible side after his dad's demise and as a father of 2 teens in the latter stages of the movie.
Initially it seemed that it was Ramya Krishnan's movie rather than Rajni's, but that was the highlight of the whole movie. You have to create something which is really bad so that our hero can destroy it with his flair.
I am still angry at the ratings for this movie. Hats off to Ravikumar(director) and Rajni and Ramya.
Mozhi (2007)
A clean entertainer with the hero as the script
Its been a long time that I have seen such a CLEAN entertainer. I have watched it several times. Other than Jyothika and Prakashraj all the names are kind of new. But the performance of all who has been casted have done a GREAT job. All the lines are funny. the levity is maintained throughout the movie. There was not a single dull moment. The highlight for me is not the acting of JO, since it was expected from her, she was brilliant importantly not overacting like she did in Chandramukhi. The highlight is the interaction between Prithiviraj(hero), Prakashraj(his sidekick) along with Bhramanandam(apartment president). Even with two on screen was good and when all the three come together they bring the roof down. Even though the out of bathroom scene is clichéd it was well done here. The cockroach scene and the following hospital make you go to hospital since your ribs will be in pain due to laughing.
The score by Vidyasagar must be mentioned. It was cool. Prakashraj and Radhamohan have given a better product than their earlier product Alazhia theeye.
All I can say is stop reading this and go and watch the movie.
Unnal Mudiyum Thambi (1988)
A great enthralling experience
I would start commenting about the movie by the words of KB. In one of the interviews he said that this movie is his 2nd best movie made.
We come to see Gemini Ganesan after a long gap, and the performance of all the characters are top notch.
In all KB movies even a peck may have a role to play. I was deeply moved by the COOK's character. The movie deals with a protagonist who is a maverick and doesn't want to follow the same stupid things which even his dad is following now. The concept of inter caste marriage, abolition of Liquor shops etc are very well etched in the movie.
The humor aspect and the Background score are excellent.
A must watch movie.
Gentleman (1993)
The Best of Shanker
This is one movie which everyone saw without any fanfare, nor with any preconception, which proved to be a great asset for the movie. I strongly believe that this movie changed the trend of all the other Tamil movies later. This brought light to the career of Arjun, who did a GREAT JOB as the education deprived youth, hence goes on looting Rs.50 cores to build a Engineering + Medical + Law college for the deprived youth. the concept was very ideal in the prevailing situation. The lead lady of the movie Madhoo ( all the heroines of Shanker's earlier movies lead lady were Maniratnam Movies Lead ladies - except Nagma) also did a pretty good job. This movie brought the emergence of Indian Michel Jackson Prabhu Deva ( who was later cast as the hero in Shanker next movie "Kadhalan"). The music and songs were added highlighted of the movie. The Climax of the movie was very touching. A great movie indeed. The sad part is that all the other Shanker's movie which involved politics had a great resemblance to this movie. So I still emphasize that this is Shanker's Best movie.
