Thondimuthalum Dhriksakshiyum (2017)
Life
Life has the tendency to surprise you in the most unexpected ways. Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum came that way to hit me real hard. It is a brilliant portrayal of life, perhaps the best you can find in an Indian movie.
There's nothing much to explain. Not many will be able to understand this movie. Too bad if someone watches this expecting it to be a thriller sorta movie. Though it's true that you feel a twist is round the corner, it's not what you think.
Talking about the story, Prasad and Shreeja are a runaway couple. While travelling in a bus, another man named Prasad stole Shreeja's gold chain and swallowed it when she saw him doing so. They go to the police station to sort the matter. Prasad's (thief) character is shady. He makes weird attempts to save his life despite being caught red-handed. You feel he has some plan, but there isn't any. He is making these attempts just in hope. Now viewers will point out logical flaws as there are many, but this is not your usual average investigation thriller. Movies like this one can get away with it. Too bad I don't understand Malayalam so couldn't understand the subtle humour if there was any.
The best movie to come in the last 4-5 years.
Kaithi (2019)
Almost as good as an out-an-out action movie can be
I am not a big fan of action movies. The reason is- they don't offer anything new and I always believe there's a limit to how much you can enjoy them. Beyond a certain point, they become monotonous.
Coming to Kaithi, it has got many things right which other action films usually don't. One is the fact that it does not lose the plot badly. The director is smart enough not to include any lousy action scenes, flashbacks, and pointless comedy. The action is limited and doesn't get repetitive. For an average Indian, it may look grim and goresome, but for fans of this genre, it may seem mild.
I didn't like any of the characters. They are not good enough to love but not bad enough to hate either, i.e, they lack depth. Action is not top-notch, it's just okayish. Plot-line is thin but it's not a bad thing at all. But for an action movie, 140 minutes is too much for my liking.
And now the big question is, is it worthy of 8.6/10? Well, just as much as Thadam and Ratchasan. It's high time we stop promoting mediocre films. Many Tamil/Telugu movies in the last 5 years have got ludicrously high ratings, this one is no exception. IMDB ratings have lost their relevance completely.
96 (2018)
A single moment of cliche kills the fun
I am the kind of guy for whom a single moment of cliche makes a wonderful experience just a watchable flick. In the recent past, I have seen a few Tamil films which were impressive in parts but suffer from this syndrome namely Thadam, Ratchasan, and Kaithi.
When one says the word 'school' , there are dozens of things that come to my mind. But if you are writing a screenplay in India, you have to insert the 'love' part to a saturation point.
96 starts on a promising note. Ram and his school friends from 10th class 96 batch gather on a get-together. There are moments of nostalgia. You feel being in your own childhood. Then it moves to one sub-story of Ram and Jaanu (Girl). At some point, it totally becomes a could-have-been love story. I wonder- if Jaanu couldn't come to the meet for some reason, and we saw only a little flashback of her story, and we had seen a movie about Ram and his nostalgia. This movie could have explored many more things.
I wished to see some backstory of them through only narration and without seeing visual flashbacks. It allows the audience to use their brain plus the writers to get out of their comfort zones and push limits of their imagination and reduces healthy 15 minutes from the running time.
Watching characters recollect the same story again and again, and crying is boring.
That amazing first half deserved a better second.
La marche des sans-nom (2007)
Fails as a political film
A man caused a war, we don't know who he is, how can one say what does it represent. Along with being hard to understand, it's also almost meaningless. This is not a new idea for a short film. I have seen a few like this. Certainly new in terms of looks and animation style.
Glued (2012)
The idea resonates with me, but the execution is weak
The ending is superb (the saving grace), forces us to think. Gadget addiction is the most common disease today, from that point of view, it's an important film. But, the rest of the film didn't strike me. It's slightly over the top. The mother was weird, but the baby, cute, calm, and relaxed.
There isn't anything unexpected. An okay film.
Fumiko no kokuhaku (2009)
What cringe !
Fumiko asks a boy for a go-out. He rejects saying he has to play basketball. Angry, the girl runs as fast as a jet (but why?), runs through the city, and finds her flying. She lands on the same boy. I won't spoil what happened next. But I couldn't grasp it. The ending was supposed to be funny but it isn't. I kept asking myself through the course of the film, "What the hell is this".
Out of Sight (2010)
Something is missing
Something is missing, and it's definitely not feelings. Well, I don't understand what's the purpose of that magic stick, does it play any role, I think it's just for filling the 5 minutes. Yes, I do know that films are about imagination, but there isn't anything in it that I have not watched before.
The girl's voice feels lovely when she calls her dog KoKo. I adore Japanese animation. Their characters are always so well made.
Nothing great, overall.
Coin Operated (2017)
One of the best shorts
197 have given it an average rating of 6.3. And it's way better than most of the Pixar shorts. Obviously, can't compare it with Pixar in terms of animation. But just, had it been made by a bigger company, it would have surely been laden with awards. I wish the production was a little better though.
Or maybe that people don't like happy endings. They want to see only realistic endings, but they don't realize films can be imaginary and exaggerated as well.
I put it alongside Geri's Game and a few other great short films.
Mouse for Sale (2010)
Surprised by the low ratings.
What's wrong with people. How is this rated below 6? It's cute, funny, and has a nice concept. What else does it need? I mean, nit a great film but still, it deserves a better score, and this platform needs better voters.
Chicken or the Egg (2013)
An okay watch
A pig love eggs. After he gets married to a chicken, he has to cut his cravings and compromise by eating corn only.
Nice but not really great. Or it's not what you see. It's very unlikely, but maybe it's about vegetarianism. He can't eat eggs because his own child will be born through an egg. Even If that's the case, It's still an okay watch.
Teeth (2015)
Gee! so ugly.
I will never watch it again. Yes, it's creepy, not sure about the scare. But it's so ugly and loathsome. Never watched something like that, nor do I want to. If you easily get disturbed by the things medical students practice, then don't watch it.
Control Bear: Wonder Garden (2013)
Nothing like I have never seen before.
Short films talk about daydreaming a lot. So, in terms of concept, it's not very new. The reason why there are so many of them might be that it gives the writer chance to use his imagination. In dreams, nothing is impossible, so in such films, there are no boundaries to your creativity.
This film fails to show the creative side of its director. There is not anything about the way it's made. The dream is not that beautiful.
In a Heartbeat (2017)
How was this never tried before.
Cinema is hundred years old, but there are not many gay-themed animated films in all these years. Probably because the genre is believed to be for kids. In a heartbeat is about school-going kids, though.
The film captures the fear in people's minds. It sounds so obvious but is depicted very well here.
Worth watching, for it tries something new.
Duet (2014)
Amazingly done
The story and concept are not new, but it's really well made. I wouldn't say this is among the best in terms of animation, but it's very pleasant.
The definition of love here is different from other films. It's not obsessive.
Deserves better than 7.2.
Dear Basketball (2017)
Oscar for this?
There is not anything new and great about this short. Yes, it's well made, but how many other such well-made shorts are there. People are behaving as if it's been never tried before. In some cases (like for katedra), an Oscar nomination is justified purely because they look beautiful. However, this short was not that good.
Nephtali (2015)
What's the point?
Probably, I am missing something. Or maybe, this short is.
First we see a bellet practicing, Glen Keane is watching her. Then we see some of his drawings in motion. Why did he mix the two stories. Was he trying to say that hand drawing animation can do wonders. I don't think any artist will ever create a movie to prove that.
It's hard to connect the dots. I didn't understand it.
Anchored (2009)
Beautifully animated
It's 11 years old and it was not even a title here on IMDb. I created this title just yesterday. There's no information on the internet regarding its release date. This is so disappointing. Because this is one of the most beautiful animations you will ever see. The original song they used is great.
People always talk about Rasulka when it comes to great animation. This one, though not as unique as Rasulka, but a great animation in its own right.
Unfortunately, very few people know about it. It deserves to be among the 'talked about films.
The Colors of Evil (2012)
Pointless.
Other reviewers have said it's dull. Add to that the fact that it is senseless. I can't derive any themes from it. Does every film need to have a meaning? Well, no, but there is a charm about a few films which can't be explained, and this film lacks exactly that.
Following (1998)
If not for Nolan, nobody would have liked it
I don't care if your plot is original, without plotholes, and explains everything, as long as it is boring.
Following is the most boring film by Nolan. I was in a mood to give it a 1 but then I thought I must reserve it only exceptionally poor films, Following is not among those.
Characters are not given any details. They are dull and one-dimensional. In Memento, the plot covered for it and the characters had their motivations for what they were doing. But here, there is no one to support the plot.
Performances are no good. Remember Dial M for murder, a brilliant smart film on a simple idea. But here, Nolan, in an attempt to make it complex and to look smart, has made a story without anything interesting.
It's in black and white. Now, I have seen Black and White films from the silent era, but they were, by no means, as boring as this one.
Hardy Sandhu: Joker (2014)
Very unsual but great lyrics by Jaani
The video is generally good. There is nothing wrong with any of the aspects. But there isn't anything you don't expect. I mean, we keep seeing same things in almost every song. A love story that starts in childhood, totally one sided, that ends in Hardy Sandhu (Joker) killing himself.
Let's focus on lyrics. They say; I, being a joker, spent my whole life trying to make you smile, such that my life has become a complete circus. In English songs, you can expect such analogies to be there. But this is a Punjabi, never has anyone written any such thing. Jaani, by no means is a traditional lyricist, here he used his imagination in a good way.
Only problem might be the way Hardy pronounced hass and nach in starting. No Punjabi will pronounce
these words this way.
Ammy Virk: Main Suneya (2020)
Okay video, great songs
Raj fatehpur has written something marvelous. I haven't heard heard anything as good since Jaani's Ikk Saal.
The concept is not very new but generally good. It's not usual love story or heartbreak. Infact, the heartbreak story is just a part of it. Major plot involves a boy, a girl and her school going son. The man finds out the one of the students he teaches is son of the girl he once loved. What will he do now? Most of the videos feature women as the culprit, this one is different.
Very good, indeed.
Diljit Dosanjh Feat. Tru-Skool: El Sueño (2017)
One of the most creative videos in last few years
I haven't watched Peaky Blinders but I am well aware of the fact that this video was ripped from it. Despite that, I love this song.
It was probably Diljit's least hit song of that year (but still, it was played at every wedding function). The good thing about the video is the colours, the lightning.
Some people say it's based on the story of Sardars living in the U. K., which seems unlikely. Diljit, in an interview, said it was just a waste of money. He is so wrong, it's one of his best songs.
Perhaps the only music video from India, with distinct features, other videos suck in terms of cinematography.
Diljit Dosanjh, Badshah, Aastha Gill: Proper Patola (2018)
Another horrible remix
Why is Bollywood hell-bent on destroying Punjabi songs? Proper patola, although, was not a great song but, at least, was better than its cacophonous remix. The original was destroyed by Badshah's unwanted rap.
This one is no different than the previous, just the tempo is changed. The fast tempo does no good to the song. Totally needless remake.
Diljit Dosanjh: Pagal (2018)
A great song
One of the best Punjabi romantic songs to have come out in the last few years.
The video features Diljit and a bartender named Mary. Diljit gets killed and she grows old in his wait. The ending is a sweet surprise.
The lyrics, written by Babbu, are great. The song is a fine mixture of sadness, romance, and nostalgia. The sad video gives a satisfactory ending, creates mixed feelings.
It's two years old, but nothing has been made in those two years that can match its quality.
Diljit Dosanjh: Clash (2020)
Diljit is going the same route as other singers
Even poorest of songs by Diljit are better than today's Punjabi Singers. Clash, although is not bad but there's nothing great about it.
The lyricist mixed Punjabi words with English, which is trend in today's songs. Clash itself is not a word that we frequently use in Punjabi.
The video and its concept are not new either. It's recorded in very popular studio, so obviously, it's technically better than most punjabi songs which have a limited budget. But, I am very dissapointed overall. It is very unoriginal.
