Forensic (2022)
Terrible movie and worse, seriously bad acting by everyone
The star cast has won awards in other films but here everyone is pathetic. Radhika Apte, Vikrant, Prachi compete against each other for worst acting awards! On top of that unbelievable story and motive for the mystery. This happens to be a ZEE tv movie so that explains the mediocrity of the movie. The movie is slow paced and never picks up. Prachi Desai is in so few films but has a knack of choosing awful films. Vikrant who is so good normally is terrible here and he needs a good director. The last scene of him firing is hilarious, his expressions. Radhika Apte is so bad, looks to be on vacation.
12th Fail (2023)
Master Story teller, Vidhu Vinod Chopra!
For long Vidhu Vinod Chopra was basking in the glory of his films directed by Raju Hirani like Munnabhai, PK, 3 Idiots. Raj Kumar Hirani took all the honors but relegated Vidhu to just a producer. 12th fail blow away all that and Vidhu is back with an extraordinary film that stays with you for long. He is a master story teller, starting in Chambal and then all the way to an emotional climax that is so endearing. 12th fail is a true story of Manoj Sharma and what a ride it has been for him. To immerse oneself in this tale, all credit goes to Vidhu Vinod Chopra. So many feel good moments, so many emotional scenes but no melodrama and great acting by Vikrant, Medha and others. The story, the characters, the pacing has been handled with maturity and the climax is just too good. The entire interview process is so crisp and the dialogues are just perfect! Nothing over the top! Great job Vidhu Vinod Chopra and an excellent movie, not to be missed!
Animal (2023)
Should be renamed as Animals or Zoo!
In Vangaland, everyone is an Animal, you just accept it as there is no point in a character getting redeemed or have some remorse. Anil Kapoor seems to be the only non Animal but he looked clueless the entire movie; he would have thought that all it needed was a little talk with Ranbir and that could have solved the problem but no, this has to drag on for 3 hours! A wafer thin plot and concept of animals roaming in a lawless jungle. Ranbir has been praised for his acting but here it was just shouting; it looked as if he walked from the Sanju set in to Animal and was asked to shout all the time. Sunny Deol would have been better in this role as he can shout more! When Ranbir is not shouting then someone else is. The only redeeming factor was Bobby Deol; he was menacing but why was he mute so Ranbir could walk away with honors? Also Bobby had such a small role but his introduction is actually the scene of the movie, I mean just the song! The violence while excessive for Bollywood tames in comparison to Tarantino. That big gun was lame; when it fired it was all CGI. The characters just move around as if nothing has happened; A massacre at the hotel and next these murderers are in London! How the heck they get visas? Bobby kills a guy in his wedding scene but no issues. In Vangaland there are no cops to be seen. Then there is that big walk around the property in no clothes - what exactly was the point of the scene? Shakti Kapoor likes what he sees and gives a gun salute to the walk - LOL! In that scene, every family member pops up conveniently and are just looking clueless as to how they should act. The cousins are all intact after so many gun shots while the bad guys are all killed; the "good" animals do not get injured at all except the main animal who gets hale and hearty all the time! Overall a hyped movie with no story, insipid action and boring scenes! This is a movie about a legit steel business but it is treated as a Narcos household! Stay Away!
The Archies (2023)
Brilliance is Zoya Akhtar - now can we have a sequel please?
Wow, the Archies was a breath of fresh unpolluted air. After the wafer thin monstrosity, Animal it was great to see 2 back to back movies from woman directors - Meghna Gulzar with Sam Bahadur and Zoya with the Archies. The Archies had peaked my interest since it was announced; what would the setting be, what story would it have, how anyone can pull it off. An extremely difficult film to make - first take a comic book from the 60s and then bring it in to 2023 and make it relevant. To pull this off Zoya and team have done an amazing job! Can't believe how they pulled this off. This is so fresh, innocent fun and transports you to the 60s right away; you just get sucked in to the Archies world. Everything about this movie - the casting, the acting, the music, the songs, the cinematography, the choreography, the costumes, the locations, the dialogues are just wonderful. I can go on and on but do not want to give too many plot points; the messages conveyed through this movie are beautiful, so relevant today. All the leads have acted great, they are all so confident and I won't be surprised if they all go big! The supporting cast was great too!
The only con is Netflix - why not the sweeping aspect ratio, Netflix? This is a film about outdoors and outdoors need CinemaScope and not your default aspect ratio. Sincerely hope Netflix corrects this or at least offers multiple aspect ratios so one can choose.
Overall, a fantastic movie, not to be missed; I have already seen twice and would see more times - it was infectious and delicious. Take a bow, Zoya!
Jawan (2023)
Mediocre film in slow motion
SRK is passionate about cinema and wants to take Indian Cinema ahead but looks like he is saddled with several people who are less passionate. How can one explain this slow motion tripe of a movie. Why so much slow motion? Because the cost is low and it serves as a tangent for low cost stunts and VFX. The only good and thrilling shots are of a Metro careening at high speed in Mumbai and mind you that is not in slow motion. There is no action set piece that is a wow, this is great. Slow motion action is cheating the audience. I am sure SRK wants to push his movies to Mission Impossible level but alas at the moment cannot do so. The next is the thin plot that has several plot holes. What about the violence? This movie is so violent that it would have been an automatic R rating in US if it had been a Hollywood movie. With a star cast of more women than men, this would be a first but when you come to individual roles, none of the women have a meaty one including Deepika Padukone. Sincerely wish, Deepika comes back to Piku days. What is she doing in this nonsense? Finally the villain played by Vijay is a caricature. He does not look at all menacing, in fact his right hand, Murad is more threatening. It is hard to say which one was more mediocre, Pathaan or Jawan. SRK needs a Rajamouli to up Indian Cinema, wish that happens soon. 2 stars for SRK's energy and passion!
Kohrra (2023)
Another foul mouthed mediocrity from Clean Slate films
What's up with Clean Slate films? Earlier they gave Paatallok, a foul mouthed tripe and now Kohrra. While Paatallok had slight bit of thrill, this one is flat. Each and every character in Kohrra is morally bankrupt - everyone has an ugly side. There is no one to drill some sense in these characters. All, except Golu, the sweet child. The mystery is predictable with no twists or turns. By the end you lose interest in the proceedings and do not even care about any of the characters. Why is Punjab shown so murky? Prosperity has changed lives in Punjab but the whole proceedings and surroundings of the characters is shown so foggy and rundown. The best crime dramas have been Delhi Crime and the current, Daahad. This is nowhere close. Unnecessary foul language and the way this progresses for answers is violence on suspects or victims - an easy way to get answers but highly improbable. There is not a single scene that has any intelligence in solving the crime. Forensics trickle in each episode to prolong the series and the entire police operation shown is so old and pathetic - apparently there have been no changes with the time period. What's with the lightning in this series? Why is it so dark and dingy? None of the performances redeem this boring saga. Another tripe from Clean Slate and from now on, avoid this production company!
Mili (2022)
Nice watch with a terrific performance from Janhavi
Nicely placed story with a predictable end but keeps you glued for the time. Janhavi is in terrific form along with the rest of the cast. Great Dehradun location and riveting storyline and direction. Janhavi has redeemed herself from the boring Gunjan Saxena but that probably depended on the director. Was great to watch Sanjay Suri after a long time. Great small town location aids in crisp background that adds to the movie. The end is a bit cliched and no sense of urgency but overall a good movie. A welcome original Bollywood fare and would like to see more such survival stories. A Definite watch!
Swades: We, the People (2004)
The best Shahrukh Khan movie ever!
And the best Ashutosh Gowarikar movie. Yes Lagaan went places, both box office and awards wise but half of the film was a cricket match which has endless possibilities to display. This movie was the most difficult with plain storytelling, performances to captivate for 3 long hours. Great photography, sync sound tech, locales and AR rahman's beautiful music as well as background score just raise this movie over others. I have seen this multiple times and it still moves me. The water drinking scene is the most impactful and have yet to see another scene like that.
Forget DDLJ, and other yashraj and johar films, this is the film which defines SRK and his acting! His acting gets elevated due in part by superior direction by Gowarikar and excellent acting from the supporting cast! SRK- Gayatri chemistry is subtle yet mesmerizing! Kishori Ballal is top notch!
Great job Ashutosh Gowarikar!
Gold (2022)
Boring joke of a movie
The Director shot the arrow in the climax! He was also bored and had no clue how to end it! It is likely Efron and Tom Hardy auditioned for Mad Max but Hardy piped Efron and Efron had to settle for this boring clone of Mad Max but nevertheless he mumbles here just like Hardy's dialogues! Hopefully he has less to speak!
Boring, predictable and nothing new!
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
What a movie! Thank you Tom Cruise!
A must see in IMAX. Thank you Tom Cruise for an exceptional movie that brought back the memories of dog fights, intense air sequences and the Ray Bans!
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
RRR - Rotten, Repetitive and Ridiculous!
Rajamouli was in a fantasy mode post Bahubali. Bahubali worked as it was a fantasy but this is outright nonsense. It definitely is fiction as never heard of any South Indian freedom fighters. On top of that anything goes in this movie. The 2 protagonists kill about 10-20 Brits but loads of Indians in over the top action. Special effects are cheesy and the action has no let up. It is a mindless dumb action especially post the party scene where there are animals unleashed on the Brits. So they need animals to create chaos and then why not the same in climax?
Overall cgi is horrible, sound effects are good and the nacho nacho song is spirited but other than that and Olivia Morris, this movie is really boring and repetitive in over the top action.
Rotten, Repetitive and Ridiculous, the only star is for the British actress, Olivia Morris. Would like to see more of her, hopefully in some sane movies.
Karma (1986)
Mediocre Subhash Ghai
Subhash Ghai always made mediocre films except a few like Karz. The people rating this move a 9 or 10 are all followers of chalta hai cinema. This movie is seriously bad; forget Holly wood comparison, this was supposed to be an ode from Ghai to Sholay, the iconic film but this is not even 10% of Sholay. Anything goes in this movie, no logic, no plan, takes the audience for granted. Substandard acting even the mighty Dilip Kumar; the lesser said the better of other actors. Not even Kashmir is captured nicely - cardboard sets - red tower, LOL; cheesy costumes, over the top acting! Terrible!
False Positive (2021)
Has Pierce Brosnan gone bankrupt?
Cannot believe that 007 did this trash! Freaking terrible waste of time! Why the heck she tries to open the safe always in the dark? Please do not watch this epic trash of a movie. Will have to read reviews now before watching Brosnan movies.
Pawankhind (2022)
Average - should have been really better!
When you are committed to such an important historical, you make sure you do complete justice on all fronts! Dialogues ok, Bajirao excellent, Shivaji could have been better, Mughals - caricatures and cartoonish!
The main aspect of the movie was to show the battle of Pawankhind and that's where there was no budget for that!
Lousy battle scenes, fake blood spouting everywhere, slow motion to compensate for amateurish special effects. The swords looked fake, the big boulder was fake - the entire battle sequence was repetitive and unrealistic so there was no emotion left to feel for the warriors and that to me is unacceptable.
Average but seriously should have been better!
Scream (2022)
Stupid Trash!
Here is the spoiler - the cops arrive at the very end! Anything goes in this movie! Even after so much brutality, all the characters get up again and again as if there is no pain! Predictable and Nonsense!
El practicante (2020)
Good but the ending ruined it!
The ending was awful. Not because how they let his ex girlfriend care for him but why the heck she even wanted to care? The guy was already gone, completely disabled so why even bother to take care of him! Both the performances were great! Overall a good film but the ending!
Bob Biswas (2021)
Dark humor and then really dark
What a different movie after ages. Really brutal and funny while doing the brutal. The in the face violence and a very nonchalant attitude about it was really original. The unexpected twists and turns keep you engrossed. A big shout out to Divya on her first movie; the cinematography, technical finesse, the way in which Kolkata plays a big part is really appealing and well done. I can debate about the ending but as this is a prequel to Kahaani which has the maniacal Bob Biswas, I think the twists at the end more than enough explain it. It would have been good to know why he became a hit man in the first place and the how he goes in to an amnesic state. Abhishek is superb in the title role and the supporting cast is also too good. Comparisons with Saswata are not fair as the latter had a 5 minute role and was shown as maniacal with no remorse. Here the character has remorse and then he becomes the one which Kahaani continued. A good original movie and no there is no resemblance to Bourne Identity - apparently every memory loss movie seems to be inspired by Bourne Identity, which this one is certainly not.
Sooryavanshi (2021)
Rohit Shetty - overhyped mediocre film maker
Some people just survive even though they dish out ridiculous movies like Rohit Shetty. To be fair some have been entertaining but most are repetitive. Shetty claims to be an action director but the action is so poor - haven't seen realistic action since Sholay with all the tech around in Hindi Cinema. In addition the cringy slow motion which is only done for unachievable action. This director doesn't give anything new - the same old stuff, fleecing the audience, chalta hai! However, there are other choices and thank you OTT for that, for e.g Suriya's Jai Bhim blows this Suckvanshi away!
Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021)
3 stars for Madurai; predictable, slow and boring
The movie started off very well but went down soon after. Nothing was going on at all. Lame and lazy writing - the guy brings a suitcase for an orientation - where is the receptionist? Absolutely no laughs and nothing new. Tried to make a Hrishikesh Mukherjee type movie but falls flat. The only redeeming thing is the backdrop of Madurai. Saniya Malhotra seems to move from Badhai ho set to this one. Watch it only for Madurai.
Blood Red Sky (2021)
Too long but ending was good!
This became long and repetitive. 2 stars for the movie and additional 2 stars for an appropriate closure to the story unlike the freaking Jason who came back again and again!
Sherni (2021)
Dull, boring, mediocre
What a waste of time. I have never seen Vidya Balan so disinterested in a movie and the credit for that is Amit Masurkar for ruining a great actress. Even David Attenborough's docs blow this movie away. There is nothing in this movie that works. They credit some CGI for a one minute sequence of Sherni. Looks like T-series did not have the budget. OTT has been good but for some of these new Indian filmmakers, it has been a way to show their mediocre talent. Amit Masurkar - what was the intent of showing Sharad Saxena brushing his teeth in the morning? What was that scene for? Several scenes have no flow - they just come and go. When everyone starts looking for the female tiger, there is absolutely no idea, who is going where and then that ridiculous map with a six inch tiger model to show where she will be. This is plain lazy and chalta hai attitude of the filmmakers - India has come a long way from there so show some professionalism and put forth at least a balanced narrative. Masurkar is more interested in politics and the same old corrupt Netas - grow up man!
Even a FTII graduate can make a better movie than this dud!
The Family Man (2019)
Replace Bajpai with Sharad Kelkar!
Bajpai is a sore! His acting is the same since his Shool days and is highly overrated plus he does not even look like an agent who can run even 100 yards. Contrast to Sharad Kelkar who has an insipid role of Arvind. Make home the Family man. A True Lies rip off, Arnold was believable but not Bajpai. Sample dialogue from first season, "Moosa is escaping", rejoinder - "F word"! - really. There doesn't seem to be any urgency or professionalism for the characters, still the Chalta hai attitude, which is changing and that is what the filmmakers should also show. Problem with all these opened up filmmakers is to take some headline and come up with a far fetched plot around it - that is not how the Security establishment operates. Watch Jack Ryan or Fauda instead!
Vantage Point (2008)
Whitaker was the fastest to reach the underpass
What a nonsense movie! Quaid, poor man's Harrison Ford has the same two expressions throughout the movie. Everyone ends up at an underpass but somehow Whitaker and the young girl are the quickest. Just chaos and idiotic direction. What were Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt, who was more effective as the double, doing in the movie?
The Big Bull (2021)
Nice movie!
Didn't have 10 hours to sit through Scam so watched this instead. Was surprised at this fast pace movie, above expectations! Great acting by AB. After a long time Hotstar has come up with something good!
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Thanks for HBOMAX !
Thanks HBOMAX streamed this nonsense. Saved me money at IMAX and I could watch this tripe half an hour at a time! How are the cities rebuild so quickly after so much destruction. The sizes of these characters does not matter at all - freaking trash!
