3rd Rock from the Sun: Two-Faced Dick (1999)
Kristen Johnston 10/10
Kristen absolutely perfectly embodies Dick's character in this episode, from his mannerisms to his cadence, and in doing so shows up John Lithgow's not quite as up to scratch depiction of the goofy but forceful Sally. Every series should have an episode like this so that actresses can use them to show their worth and earn equal (or in this case greater!) pay, which I suspect was not the case as it rarely is. John's performance relies a little too much on playing a simpering woman, which is a shame as this is a series that doesn't generally negatively stereotype women. Kristen more than makes up for John here though.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Hackneyed Ridge
The true story this is based on offers a fascinating chance to do more than the usual war film; to really delve into an alternative presentation and discussion of mankind's tendancy to war, as well of course to honour the lives lost to war by so many men and women, whether they condone or object to it. Andrew Garfield is a fantastic actor. His nuanced portrayal of an alternative Christian's actions in Under the Banner of Heaven shows how much he could have brought to this film. Sadly he has little to work with here where all we get are trite sentimentalism and plenty of gore. I see from IMDB that Mel Gibson's son has high billing in the credits for his debut role although he made little impression. It is worth seeing Desmond Doss and some of the remaining soldiers portrayed here speak at the end, but you don't need to sit through the whole film to do that. Otherwise give this a miss and watch/rewatch Under the Banner of Heaven and Band of Brothers instead.
Goliath (2016)
Truly dire
Quick off the mark Billy Bob Thornton's character manages to bed a potential client nearly 20 years his junior. Uncomfortable and unbelievable, but this seems the norm for Amazon series (see Bosch, the Romanoff's etc) whose casting team, writers and directors live so far from reality as to believe this is common occurrence. Then behold the incredulous seduction of a young solicitor by her boss portrayed by actors with a vomit-inducing 36 years difference. To give context when she turned 16 (a common age of consent) he would be 52, and if you don't see anything wrong with that you should talk to a doctor.
The Tez O'Clock Show (2019)
Just about the nearest thing the UK has to the Daily Show
⌚Just about the nearest thing the UK has to the Daily Show.
Muppets Now: Getting Testy (2020)
Disgusted at Disney
There are the obvious criticisms of the Muppet's voices not fitting anymore, and an absence of any humour hitting the mark as well as of any heart and soul, but this episode also shows a disgusting waste of food and an offensive hand gesture.
New Girl (2011)
See it for Cece
Amusing and sweet but obvious and it soon gets tired. I could have watched Cece in her own series though - less kooky and more kick-ass.
The Disappearance of Susan Cox Powell (2019)
An interesting case incredibly badly recounted
This could have been much more effectively and intelligently told in a quarter of the time to make a stronger statement in support of abuse victims. Countless unnecessary recaps, terrible editing and numerous jumps around the timeline in the name of unachieved suspense are presented by a director and production team who will hopefully find different careers now. Jenn Oxborrow's contributions are the highlight that gain it some stars.
