This film, straddling the line between avant-garde cinema and high-end soft porn, leans heavily into an aesthetic that might be mistaken for depth. Despite some characteristics such as a monochromatic imagery, and a theatrical style akin to an unconventional Eastern European play-these elements fail to mask the narrative's hollowness. The film indulges in excessive nudity, violence, and a disturbing disregard for animal rights, underpinned by a pervasive, unexplained strangeness. These choices, rather than enhancing the film's artistic value, appear gratuitous, serving no purpose other than to shock. This strategy, targeting viewers who mistake the unusual for the profound, detracts from the possibility of offering a genuinely impactful cinematic experience.
I know oscars and other awards are usually granted only to "serious" movies which are often sad and long. And many do deserve them.
Somewhere along the way we seem to have forgotten how to tell good stories. Well, this I found to be a brilliant, creative and educational story. The editing and all the 90s style flashbacks were terrific. I found the blend with acting, real-life interviews and past video material to be made masterfully.
Above all, telling a simple story like that in an engaging, entertaining way without sugarcoating it and adding all sort of 2020 drama to it, was so refreshing.
Well done to the director and the whole crew!
