12th Fail (2023)
It's an inspiration beyond borders! Deserves National award and an Oscar nomination.
The film stands as a symbol of perseverance, patience, and character. Every element of the movie was skillfully crafted, with characters, regardless of size, delivering their best performances, ensuring there's never a dull moment. As time races on, you'll find yourself rooting for the lead character's success.
Notably, the film's strength lies in its compelling story and the outstanding performance of the lead actor, Vikrant Massey, who truly owned and conquered the role. It's disheartening that the movie struggled to gain attention pre-release, overshadowed by high-budget mediocrity like Jawan, Dunki, Animal, and even more disheartening that Netflix opted for a film like Annapoorni-a mere propaganda movie-over this gem.
Sunbae, Geu Libseutik Bareujimayo (2021)
Emotional and romantic love story
This is another typical Korean drama. But I loved the series specially because of the acting of the cast and direction
The story was banal but direction and script was good. The attires c were very professional, elegant, chic and stylish, Except for the story, everything else was done masterfully. Jin-a quite artfully displayed her character's emotions, flaws, and resolution. She made her flaws appear humanly. On the other hand Rowoon was as usual brilliant. It really shows up that he researched and well thought about executing the role, if not he is gifted. His micro expressions were amazing, perhaps he is a method actor. I really hope he comes out his comfort zone of being "chocolate boy" and pursue some serious roles.
One thing I really like about romantic K-dramas is they are actually romantic. It's not about lust /sex / physical attraction. They depict the bond of love tastefully, and makes the lust look like a by-product - which is how it should be.
Yi Yeonaeneun Bulgahangryeok (2023)
Rowoon+Bo-ah <3
Critically speaking the series deserve 5/10. The flow of story is pretty random, story itself was weak. I liked the costume design though.
But the reason I gave it 9/10 is simply because this series was not meant for critical assessment. The whole intention was to make the audience take the back seat, turn off cynicism and just enjoy. I would say it was successful in making me feel what it intended to- Romantic!
The chemistry between Hung-Jo and Sinyu was critically lame, yet non-critically adorable, funny and cute. Actor Rowoon and Bo-ah were perfect together. Specially Rowoon showed his acting prowess. He gives brilliant yet subtle facial expressions. I watched him on "she would never know" and "the king's affection" and I hope he thinks about acting in movies, and on more serious script. He displayed a lot of potential, and can be something really big and global. Bo-ah is the the cutest, I felt like squeezing her cheeks, haha. Hope to see this pair again.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Truly immersive experience!
I'm still processing my thoughts after experiencing Nolan's Oppenheimer. Opting for the IMAX 70mm format was a great decision as the movie truly transported me to its era through its immersive presentation.
Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. Delivered the performances of a lifetime, and the background score was truly captivating.
Among all these aspects, Cillian Murphy's portrayal was particularly outstanding. My brother used to say, Cillian is the most underrated Hollywood actor, true that.
He's undoubtedly on track for an Oscar win, so is Robert as the best supporting actor.
A perfect 10/10!
Fall (2022)
Great story of stupid people high on adrenaline!
I was very skeptical about the movie, specifically because of unknown cast members. Also, it was "meh" at the beginning, but it picked up from the moment they started climbing ladder, it was the moment both acting and direction started showing maturity.
The story was gripping and nerve wracking. At times with predictable "twist"s, I think the background score was giving it away. It depicted how people risk their lives for seeking attention, jeopardizing life in the name of "life is short, let's make it shorter and traumatic"
I think they intentionally had less known cast, so the character's survival chances don't become obvious to us. Overall enjoyed a lot.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)
Laila-Mojnu 3D
Such a huge disappointment. My expectation was it would be a mythological movie. They will describe the power, backstory, significance of certain Astras/weapons, and mythology. It failed because of basic costume design, unappealing set design, inconsistent background score, cringe dialogues, horrible acting and inapt direction. Only thing watchable is visual effects (that too if you watch in 3D), but it's really animation like.
It's mainstream bollywood love story. The title is misguiding.
End of the day, I know this movie will be commercially successful, because of scarcity of good movies in the market, and people dying to watch something new after COVID, and that's an irony.
Death to 2021 (2021)
Sharp-witted slapstick! Watch it!
Really loved it. It is definitely a sour grape, many people will be offended but I will say watch it with open mind and judge it for yourself. It is obviously a time-worthy satire.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Great political satire!
Enjoyed every bit of it. Movie is politically polarized but truthfully done. Best movie of 2021. Great casting, direction, script and dialogues. Lyrics of Ariana's song was killer. It brought up issues like climate change, social media obsession, news program being comedy shows, bureaucracy educational institutions, money over science.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Season 2 - complete garbage
This is one of the mindless binge watching tv series, I watch while doing something else such as cooking. So I never really had high expectations from this one. However the first season was okay, and I think they should have stopped there. Because the second season is completely garbage. No story at all. It seems like characters were just doing or saying whatever they want to. Such a waste of time. I stopped at episode 2, and started watching Everybody Loves Raymond, all over again.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Very metaphorical! Brilliant story! But not everyone's cup of tea.
The first six episodes are peculiar and looked ordinary, but episode seven was deal breaker. How we twist verses or mantras for selfish purposes. It showed religious blindness, brainwash, being suicidal in name of religion, losing conscientious in herb, eventually the destruction it causes.
X-Ray: Selected Satyajit Shorts (2021)
Disappointing
Good plot, but Direction is garbage. All of them tried to give Bengali-theatre style look.
StartUp (2016)
Great plot but clumsy direction
Very funny Direction. The casting is good. The story 'frustratingly' great. A program that broke so many stereotypes, such as a person can be Jewish yet not bright, women might have higher IQ than any men in the room, studying in a great Institute does not guarantee great life. It showed how fiercely competitive the tech industry is. I liked it more, because it showed women can be as brilliant, ambitious, selfish, ruthless, dangerous as any man can be.
The Father (2020)
So traumatizing that it feels like torture! Carefully hand crafted
I am speechless at Hopkins acting. My grandma was an Alzheimer's patient. Seeing the movie through an eye of a patient going through memory loss, I realized how traumatizing it would have been for her too. I didn't watch movies of other Oscar nominated actors but this acting was
beyond well deserved. Olivia Colman's acting was shattering. I was surprised to know its Director's debut.
But can't forget the last scene. Brutal, heartbreaking and traumatizing. It will be in my memory quite some time.
Bombay Begums (2021)
Bakwas!
I lived in India for four years, but don't know, since when Indian society became so desperate about sex! I mean who is so desperate to have sex with other woman, having sleeping GF next door within eye sight? Such rubbish and misleading portrayal of a society. Women empowerment means freedom of choice, expression and speech; it never means, women having the freedom of doing the same wrong and bad things that men do regularly. What's wrong, is wrong, irrespective of gender. Total Garbage.
Capharnaüm (2018)
I wish I could give more than 10.
So detailed and carefully crafted. Everything, cast, script, acting, direction, set design, costume design...everything was flawless. But I speechless by the Zain's acting, so natural.
AK vs AK (2020)
Impressed by Anurag's acting
The plot is good. Anurag's acting was very realistic and convincing. Even Bonny Kapoor's short appearance was pretty good. Anil's son overacted too much. It was a good script, good direction. Camera work was above average. The cast and make-up could have been better. All the side actors-actresses were not looking or acting like normal people, I mean their acting looked like acting.
Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives (2020)
Koi bhi star ban jata hai aaj kal...
Just watched first episode.Such a rubbish. Fake accent and wannabes. Everyone is trying to prove she is the happiest and, has the most perfect life.
