Uchu kaijû Gamera (1980)
Garbage
This film was made as a finale attempt to save the company from bankruptcy. Obviously, it didn't work and rightfully so. All of the Gamera footage is recycled from previous films. This is not the first time they've done this in the franchise but in those prior films, it was only a few moments. In this film, every single scene is recycled from previous films, so it begs the question - Why waste your time on it? If they couldn't put forth the effort to make an original film then why bother wasting the time watching it? It's truly nothing but garbage and the lowest point of this franchise without question.
Daikaijû kettô: Gamera tai Barugon (1966)
Slow and lacks quality
Officially in color, the first Gamera sequel revolves around a painfully boring human plot. A hidden gem, a couple of murders, and from the gem hatches Barugon, who causes a ton of destruction. Gamera returns and is quickly defeated. Humans do a bunch of interesting technobabble to corner and hurt Barugon before Gamera finishes it off.
With a near 2-hour runtime, this film would have been much easier to sit through if they had cut back on all of that nonsense surrounding the gem. I was so bored with it that later on in the film, I ended up skipping those parts. The military part of the story was equally uninteresting and played out similarly to the first film. And while it was nice to see a lot more of Gamera this time around, the suits used for the monsters looked terrible and the effects just aren't on par with other films from that time. All in all, It's worse than the first film.
Daikaijû Gamera (1965)
Pretty generic
It almost borderlines on being so bad that it's good but it is still bad. The parts with Gamera are solid but everything else leaves a lot more to be desired. Visually, it doesn't age well. The sub-plot with the boy and his missing turtle is simply idiotic and takes so much out of the film. And the main plot is as generic as you'd expect it to be, which isn't surprising considering it is essentially a Godzilla knock-off.
Don't get me wrong, I can totally understand why someone likes Gamera but if you truly want to get into the character, I honestly wouldn't recommend this as a jumping point. Especially if you're trying to stream it.
Gojira vs. Supesugojira (1994)
Yet another disappointing Godzilla film.
As the humans build a new giant robot, Mogera, to help fight against Godzilla, A new threat arrives. Spacegodzilla comes to the planet causing destruction and leading to an unlikely alliance between Godzilla and Mogera to defeat him. It's a short, simple story that is padded beyond belief.
The human characters range from forgettable to insufferable and their side of the story is incredibly uninteresting. I genuinely did not care about them or what was going on with them, I just wanted to see more of the noticeably absent Godzilla and Spacegodzilla, who are barely featured in the first 60 minutes of the film and largely reserved for the lackluster final that relies too heavily on cutaways to the human nonsense and features a disappointing lack of action.
Doragon bôru Zetto: Tobikkiri no Saikyô tai Saikyô (1991)
Cooler delivers, The rest of the movie does not
Thus far the most tolerable DBZ film I've seen but that isn't really saying much. Oddly shorter than the previous entries in the series as well, Cooler's Revenge introduces Cooler, the older brother of Frieza, who arrives on Earth in order to seek out the person who killed his brother.
What follows is yet another recycle of the other films - Main villain and his henchmen arrive. Krillin, Gohan, and Piccolo have minor success holding them off (Piccolo more so than the rest). Goku saves the day by defeating the villain. It's predictable but the reason I like it more than the other films is that you establish early on Cooler isn't playing around. He takes charge and criticizes his henchmen for playing games when they could so easily win. I also liked that we see Goku take on the SS form rather than spirit bombing his way to victory.
Sadly, It is also yet another non-canon entry but if you are going to watch any out of the first volume of the DBZ films, This should be the only one you watch.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Saiya-jin da Son Gokû (1991)
Heavily recycled and boring
In yet another unoriginal, uninspired DBZ movie - A villain (Lord Slug) arrives on Earth, Uses the dragon balls to wish for eternal youth, and attempts to take over the planet. Gohan tries to play hero but is ultimately bailed out by Piccolo and then Goku, who saves the day by defeating the villain with yet another spirit bomb (for the second time in a row).
Honestly, I don't get how anyone can rate this highly as it just recycles what we have already seen before. It's an utter waste of time.
Dragon Ball Z: Chikyû Marugoto Chôkessen (1990)
Boring
The film opens with a forest fire that Gohan and his friends put out and then quickly gathering the dragon balls in order to restore it. During this time, A group of pirates led by a saiyan warrior named Turtles decide to plant the titular Tree of Might on Earth, which absorbs the planet's energy and produces fruit that gives them a power increase.
Cut to the generic rounding of the heroes to defeat the villain and roll credits. It was predictable and went nowhere fast. I honestly couldn't wait to be done with it if I am being honest. The story had no substance whatsoever, It recycled the second halves of the previous two films where it is just a drawn out, uninteresting fight, ultimately ending with Goku saving the day
And on a side note, Why they had that unnecessary opening with the forest fire when it had nothing to do with the story? Who knows but its there.
Doragon boru Z: konoyo de ichiban tsuyoi yatsu (1990)
Slightly more tolerable than the first film
At a snowy mountain top, Dr. Kochin uses the dragonballs to wish that Dr. Willow be released from his icy tomb. The duo then set out to kidnap the world's strongest fighters in order to test them against their experiments. The reason? To find a suitable host for Dr. Willow's brain, which was the only thing to survive their ice prison after 50 years of confinement.
Goku, upon being told that Piccolo and Master Roshi have been kidnapped, teams with Krillin and Gohan to defeat the experiment and ultimately Dr. Willow, who uses a giant robot mech to fight them.
Overall, It was certainly a more tolerable film than Dead Zone because it told an actual story and didn't rely on filler to pad it through. I will say though that the final act was a bit of a drag and relied too heavily on obvious fake-outs before the heroes win at the end. Much like the first film though, This isn't considered canon so thankfully, it is optional viewing.
Doragon Bôru Zetto Ora no Gohan o Kaese!! (1989)
Don't waste your time
A non-canon prequel to DBZ. Taking place not long after Dragon Ball ended, Gohan is kidnapped by Garlic Jr for the dragon ball on his hat but soon after decides to keep him alive as an apprentice after noticing his high power level. His abduction leads to Goku teaming with Krillin, Kami (who had defeated Garlic for the role of Earth's guardian, and Piccolo teaming up to take on Garlic Jr and his henchmen.
Having united the dragon balls and wished for immortality, Garlic Jr becomes an unbeatable foe who opens the titular dead zone up in hopes of killing off the heroes. Gohan taps into his powers, knocks Garlic Jr into the dead zone and all is right in the world.
Minus the opening and closing credits, The run time is under 40 minutes (I'd say closer to 34-35 minutes total) and it is quite a forgettable movie. There is virtually no story aside from the brief encounters with a couple characters and the Kami/Garlic backstory. The majority of the run time is dedicated to the fight scenes. And despite its short length, You can't help but feel like there is an overwhelmingly large amount of filler in this. It was to the point where I thought they could have made this one-off 25 minute episode and just moved on, This did not have to be a movie at all.
My advice is to skip it. Not only, as I mentioned before, is it not canon but it also simply is not good.
Gojira tai Megagirasu: Jî shômetsu sakusen (2000)
A poorly dubbed mess
First off, I'd highly recommend listening to the original Japanese dub because the English dub is an absolute mess. But then again, So is the plot of this movie.
There are many plot holes or just clear gaps in logic that turn this plot into one of just utter nonsense. They want to get rid of Godzilla using a black hole capable of teleportation....really? That is the best you can come up with. Each film in the Millennium era is essentially a soft reboot with each film acting as its own individual story. I am thankful for that because I would genuinely feel bad for the writer(s) that had to deal with a sequel to this trash.
And let's not forget to mention the terrible cast, poor CG and the oddly condensed Kaiju action that is really saved for the final act with a small appearance or two sprinkled throughout the movie as a teaser.
Gojira vs. Biorante (1989)
I really wanted to like this
I appreciate Biollante and what she meant for the series going forward but sadly, Biollante was never properly utilized in this movie. She never came off as a threat to Godzilla and was beaten fairly in one-sided affairs both times that they encountered each other. And it freaking sucks because she was beautifully done and should have been a much bigger threat than she actually was in the movie.
And I would say that the same applies for the plot as well. It was all over the place and was such a mess at times, I could hardly stand it. There were far too many subplots, the pacing was like being dragged across nails and it felt like they really couldn't pick one aspect of the film to develop before going into something else entirely.
Godzilla vs Biollante is one film that I genuinely would love to see remade because I think they can do much better the second time around than they did the first.
Gojira (1984)
A return but not a return to form
The first film of the Heisei era was meant to be a Godzilla film that returns to it's roots but sadly, It is not a return to form. The incredibly unoriginal plot is something we have seen nearly half a dozen times before this. The primary focus of the plot is Godzilla's return (duh...) and the humans attempt to stop him from his destructive rampage.
It is essentially a rehash of everything we have seen before, a reintroduction of a classic character and that was their biggest mistake making this film. There was no risk and no real reward. They played it safe and ultimately delivered a bland movie that failed to live up to expectations.
Gojira tai Mekagojira (1974)
Could have been better
I will happily agree that Mechagodzilla is one of the best villains that Godzilla has faced, I will not agree that the movie is actually good. I thought the sub-plot with King Caesar was nonsense and took away from building up Mechagodzilla. Especially when it would take another 30 years for Caesar to appear in another Godzilla film while Mechagodzilla has appeared multiple times.
I think this movie could have been a lot better than what it was but for the most part, It was watchable for sure. I just think the love for Mechagodzilla overshadows the actual quality of the movie.
Gojira tai Megaro (1973)
Not really a Godzilla film
Originally intended to be a solo film about Jet Jaguar, They quickly re-wrote the script to add Godzilla and Gigan once they realized that Jet Jaguar couldn't carry the film alone and shot the film in just 3 weeks. The rushed shooting schedule and script that was made up on the fly caused a massive drop off in quality, Resulting in this movie being one of the worst in the series.
Chikyû kôgeki meirei Gojira tai Gaigan (1972)
A slow paced, unoriginal plot with plenty of action towards the end
The plot is one very similar to those of Invasion of Astro-Monster and All Monsters Attack. It's very slow paced and rather difficult to get into. TBH, It kind of kills watching this movie for me as nearly all of the Kaiju action is reserved for the final 40 minutes of the film.
Gigan proved to be a pretty worthy combatant to Godzilla and it certainly helps having the returning King Ghidorah by his side. I've never got the appeal of Anguirus as he is pretty worthless when it comes to a fight. I wished they used another monster to team up with Godzilla so the fight wouldn't have been such a one-sided affair until the last few minutes of the film.
Overall, If you can tough it through the slow plot, You'll get a pretty entertaining fight scene near the end of the film. And despite being as entertaining as it was, It still wasn't good enough to save the film from mediocrity.
Gojira tai Hedora (1971)
One of the more entertaining Godzilla movies
What makes this movie so entertaining is how great of a villain that Hedorah is. He transformers multiple times throughout the movie and always seems to be constant threat against Godzilla until the very end.
The only bad thing I could possibly say about this movie is that the plot is a little cliche. Hedorah was created by Earth's pollution so we are beaten fairly heavily with the "Don't Pollute" message throughout the film. Other than that, It's incredibly entertaining and Hedorah is makes it a must see IMO.
Gojira Minira Gabara Ôru kaijû daishingeki (1969)
A desperate attempt to appeal to children
All Monsters Attacks is the one and only attempt by those behind the Godzilla franchise to appeal to children. And it was just an utter mess.
Aside from their heavy use of stock footage, The plot was painfully weak and the fact that a majority of the film takes place within a dream is a slap to the face of fans. All Monsters Attacks is simply the worst Godzilla film.
Kaijû sôshingeki (1968)
Recycled plot but the fight scenes make it worthwhile
The plot of this movie is very similar to what Invasion of Astro-Monster was only the plot takes place on Earth rather than another planet. And personally, I am much more of a fan of that movie than I am this one.
The only redeemable thing about this movie is that the fight scenes are pretty entertaining. There's a wide variety of Kaiju featured (from Godzilla to Ghidorah) and it makes for some pretty solid entertainment. It's definitely more tolerable than a majority of other Godzilla films but it's far from the best.
Kaijûtô no kessen: Gojira no musuko (1967)
But why?
Why is there a baby Godzilla? Well, Probably to appeal more to kids but that is about it. It's a pretty dumb movie with surprisingly decent fight scenes. At this point in the filmography though, It's the worst one.
Gojira · Ebira · Mosura Nankai no daikettô (1966)
And back to the drop off in quality
The previous two films were great, This one not so much. Ebirah is a giant lobster under the control of a criminal enterprise using slave labor on an island to create weapons. Godzilla is eventually thrown into the mix and it goes from there. Sadly, Not much happens.
A majority of the film is based on the human side of the story and features little monsters. Mothra, in it's adult form, finally appears and that to me was the only highlight of this movie.
Kaijû daisensô (1965)
Rivals the original IMO
The plot was surprisingly great. Human-like aliens seeking to use Godzilla and Rodan in order to combat Ghidorah on Planet X try to form an alliance with humans on Earth. The fight scenes are rather short and abrupt but the story is satisfying enough to warrant watching.
San Daikaijû Chikyû Saidai no Kessen (1964)
Enjoyable for the most part
The human side of the plot was utter nonsense. A princess possessed by an alien spirit to warn of the coming of Ghidorah is constantly under threat of assassination in an unrelated subplot. It's best to just ignore it because what you really want to watch is the king himself.
Ghidorah, Godzilla and Rodan deliver quality fight scenes that instantly made this one of my favorite Godzilla movies.
Mosura tai Gojira (1964)
Where's Mothra?
Mothra appears for all of 5 minutes in this movie. It was essentially just a teaser and nothing more. Aside from that, This film was a mess. Poor acting, The stupidly miniature twins that summon Mothra through song and fight scenes that will put you to sleep. Just skip this one.
King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963)
Very unsatisfying
For the time, I am sure it was interesting enough but nowadays, I found it very unsatisfying to watch. Kong doesn't behave like a gorilla, He behaves more like a man in a gorilla suit. The fights between the two were often one sided (with Godzilla winning a majority of the time) and filled with multiple, rapid edits that made the fight scenes look awful. The plot to pit the two against each other was decent enough but it was the disappointing fight scenes and terrible acting that ruined it for me.
Gojira no gyakushû (1955)
A quickly produced sequel
Godzilla Raids Again was shot and put out within months of the original's release. The intention was to simply capitalize on the suddenly popular Godzilla and make a quick buck. And while they certainly did get paid with this film, There was a severe lack of quality. It's almost instantly forgettable.
