Little Dorrit (2008)
Perfection
Charles Dickens writes characters like no other...highly entertaining. He had the ability to create so many characters and he could write a good person, an evil person, a stupid or naive person, greedy, selfish, giving, rich, and poor...he could do it all.
So to watch his story brought to life by the most excellent of British actors was utterly fantastic and nothing short of pure joy.
Each one played their part perfectly. Even the characters that are unlikeable.
In particular, Andy Serkis was brilliant. And Claire Foy was a delight. Treat yourself to the best of acting and storytelling. It's worth every moment.
The Mummy (2017)
Not worth it.
Not worth the time it must have taken to make it or the money or the time it took to watch it.
I used to love Tom Cruise but I'm truly done. All of his dangerous stunts can't make up for the bad acting. He tries but I just won't watch his movies anymore.
The rest of the cast is not good enough to save this movie, including Russell Crowe. Him playing the Jekyll/Hyde character didn't work and came across as ridiculous.
Too many fight scenes where the cast survives what most would die from.
It made me long to get out my VHS copy of the original The Mummy. Now that was a great movie worth every second.
The English (2022)
Brilliant
I have to make a confession.... I do not like westerns. The land is too dry, there is never any water, there are no trees, the distance between places is so far, and it's just a big open space.
I hate westerns, BUT I adore Emily Blunt!! She is a delight in everything she does and this is no exception.
She plays a very likely character who goes through quite a bit in the 6 episodes.
The whole production is very well done. The makeup alone is perfectly done.
The sets, the music and the storyline have the feeling of an old movie, but is not boring at all. It's full of topnotch UK actors like Blunt, Toby Jones, Ciaran Hinds, Stephen Rea, Rafe Spall.
They are reason enough to watch.
The whole thing is full of so much...love, hate, frustration, violence, pride, racism, acceptance, adventure.
Watch this...its worth it!!!
Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1995)
If you are a fan of UK shows...
...then you will enjoy this.
I love that it's so anti Hollywood. In true British style this show has a main character in her 60s, dressed in the older lady's clothing and hats...unapologetically. It's about the stories and characters.
Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators (2018)
For the family.
This show is a delight and the characters get better with each season.
If you love all things British then you will enjoy this and you can watch it with the whole family..except for tiny kids. There are murders but not usually gory.
Spencer (2021)
I tried, I really did...
...but I knew it. Kristen Stewart is one of the worst actors out there. She ruins everything she is in.
She tried, I'll give her that, but she ended up making Diana as irritating as she is.
Even the massive load of first class UK actors couldn't make me watch more than half an hour.
Profile (2018)
An adult online movie
Great combination of movie and documentary. I very much recommend it. The acting is excellent and you will never get bored, even though it all takes place over the internet.
Fascinating story and fantastically shot.
Intrusion (2021)
No chemistry here
There is no chemistry between the two main characters and there are very few other characters so that makes a difference here.
I knew what was going to happen within 5 minutes. Don't waste your time.
Hypnotic (2021)
Can't watch the whole thing...
I'm starting to think that Kate Segal only makes B movies...every time I watch a movie she is in I can't get through it.
This movie is not worth your time.
The Woman in Black (2012)
Perfect
If you love a dark English gothic horror movie then this is for you. It's perfect in every way.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Why is Stanley Kubrick considered such a genius???
I have always been curious about the acting between the then real life husband and wife, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in this movie, and thought I would check this out since Netflix has it.
I have rarely seen such bad acting. The scenes with the 2 of them are painful to watch. It's Cruise trying to be artistic and Kidman long before she learns her craft. I literally cringed several times, especially when Cruise laughs. The script is ridiculous and awkward, the writing is awful, and if they were adlibbing then they should have used better actors. You can feel them trying to figure out what to say.
The rest of the movie is made for a director who uses it as a tool to see naked women.
Do not waste any time on this. It's not worth it.
Flesh and Blood (2020)
If you love British actors then watch this.
You will recognize most if not all of these actors if you love British actors and their level of expertise. This started slow and I wasn't sure for the first 15 minutes, but I am so glad I perservered. It is such fun to watch it all unfold. I won't tell you anything...it would spoil it for you. Sit back and enjoy...you won't be able to stop until it's all said and done.
Roadkill (2020)
Not Bertie Wooster
It's great to watch Hugh Laurie do a dramatic role in the UK. I'm not one for political stories but the Brits do things so well that I can recommend it.
Mrs Wilson (2018)
Hard to believe but true...
Such a different & dramatic story. Brilliantly acted by a top list of UK actors. Well worth watching.
Dark Skies (2013)
Pleasantly surprised
Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of Keri Russell, nor am I a fan of alien movies, but I really recommend this one. It's different, but still scary enough. There are a few scenes that really freaked me out.
It is well done and worth a watch.
Fisherman's Friends (2019)
A nice movie with a good heart
If you are tired of the violence, language and skin in most movies, then sit back with a cuppa or a pint and enjoy this lovely story with matchless English scenery.
If you like Doc Marten then this is a must watch for you.
It's not the best movie, but it's worth the time.
Then Came You (2020)
I actually feel badly about this review but...
...I have to be honest, so here we go.
The best part of the movie is the castle and the scenery. It is Scotland so it is beautiful and breathtaking and the castle is perfection, and I've seen quite a few.
The second best part is Craig Ferguson. He is gorgeous and funny and he is delightful in everything he does. Ford Kiernan is great, although he doesn't really get a proper chance to shine in this movie.
Here is the hard part. Kathie Lee Gifford was absolutely awful. I mean bad. I used to watch 'Regis & Kathie Lee' and loved it, but it was like she walked off that stage and right into this movie, as herself, not an actress. I feel bad because I believe that she is a lovely person in real life, and strives to bring joy wherever she is, but it doesn't mean that she can act. It was truly painful to watch most of the time, but the scenery made it worth most of the pain. She almost wrecked the entire thing.
It's a nice but very Hallmark-y movie. Unless you adore those silly movies, then you probably won't like this one. Very American and not enough Scottish for me.
Sorry Kathie Lee.
Johnny English Strikes Again (2018)
A right good laugh
If you like Johnny English then you will like this 3rd installment. Yes it's silly, but there are some really clever bits and I sure did laugh.
Escape Room (2019)
Very entertaining
This is a great movie. Although I admit that I have never done an escape room myself, so can't comment on whether that would change my enjoyment of the movie.
The rooms are done so well, and it does a good job of keeping you on your seat.
It gives just some character development to get you going and the rest unfolds on its own.
No guts, gore, violence or sex and low on profanity so a good choice for families with older children.
Criminal: UK (2019)
Could season 2 be as good as season 1???
YES!!! The acting & writing in Criminal is so good maybe it should be criminal. The Brits know how to take 2 rooms and a hall and make you forget that there are no guns, sex, violence or true backgrounds...and they don't need them.
You never know what is coming but each episode is absolutely brilliant!!
This show deserves to win every award they can be nominated for.
Don't miss this.
Relic (2020)
Understated but excellent
This is typical yet not typical of the horror genre. I can't quite put my finger on why, but I really liked this film. The acting was excellent as is normal with English and Australian actors. It is understated. Let it unfold and try to figure out what it is all about. I think it's worth it.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Disturbing...
This is one of the most confusing & disturbing movies I have ever seen.
The only reason I gave it a rating of 3 is that the acting is excellent. Toni Collette & David Thewlis are brilliant in everything they do, even in this nonsensical script.
I don't get it. If you do, please enlighten me.
Fantasy Island (2020)
No fantasy here
Don't waste your time with this one. It's truly a bad movie and doesn't really work.
Devil (2010)
Light scare but different
Good movie if you are looking for a scare but it's not over the top.
I thought it was an interesting story and it was well done.
We'll worth it.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Not the best version of this great story.
I love the Turn of the Screw. It's a great story. It was a great idea to make this into a short series...BUT, they dragged it out too long. Some parts are very slow.
The kids are terrific actors but the main character is sometimes painful.
I recommend looking for the Valerie Bertinelli version called The Haunting of Helen Walker. It's perfect. It stays truer to the story and the acting is great.
