Fly Me to the Moon (2024)
Seriously good!
Let me start by saying this is not my kind of movie. I like horror and thrillers and scifi/fantasy. I knew this wasn't any of those but I like space so I watched. This was seriously one of the best movies I have seen in a long time! It was well acted, story was tight and it was just fun!
I remember the moon landing although I was only 3, it's one of my earliest meomories, we gathered around our 19" B&W TV to watch. It was unknown what would happen or what they would find when they got there. I thought the movie captured that well, what if something went wrong and what it would do to our world standing if it went wrong, and the lengths the government would go to cover that up. But it also delved into the individuals and how they felt about it and how important it was to them.
I really liked how the astronauts were just kind off in the background, almost any other movie or show about the moon landing focuses on the big three but it took a lot of people to get them there.
And then behind all that you have the romance, something I usually don't care about in movies, but this one made me smile.
All in all a great movie and I'll probably watch it again when it hits streaming.
Snack Shack (2024)
Good fun with a drama twist
This really is a throwback to the older comedies, where they'd cuss, drink, fool around. Todays comedies are so vanilla it was good to see a throwback. I mean it's no Porky's or Animal House but it's the best I've seen in awhile.
My only complaint is that one real serious part they put in, did we really need that? It kind of put a damper on the comedy. But it wasn't enough to ruin it so it still gets an 8 from me.
The actors were good, the two guys made me think of the Corys, the wild one and the more reserved one, and you really can't get more 90's than the Cory's can you? I see some reviewers saying they look too old for the age they're playing but things have changed since the 90's, boys did look older then, now boys still look like boys even when they're men. I don't know why that is but it is, compare a 90's yearbook to one of today and you'll see I'm right.
Tyson's Run (2022)
Sweet little movie
I liked it. It's the kind of movie to watch when you want to be reminded of the good in the world. Yes it's a bit simplistic, yes it's not a multi million budget or A+ actors, but it's sweet and it makes you feel good and what's wrong with that???
I laugh at the reviewers saying the kid didn't portray autism well. First off Autism is a spectrum and people at one end of the sprectrum are nothing like those at the other end, and then you have all those inbetween. Secondly, the kid who plays Tyson is actually on the spectrum so he probably knows a bit better than you.
So yeah, if you're looking for a movie thats gonna blow you away and have you talking about it for weeks, this probably ain't it. But if you just want to pass some time, cheer for a hero and feel good when you turn off the tv give it a shot.
Wonka (2023)
Big fan, I'm very pleased
Big fan of the original and honestly when I first heard of this I didn't want to see it made. Had no idea who this Chalamet kid was, then I saw a pic in the costume and thought he had the right look. When I finally saw a teaser trailer it just felt right so I gave the movie a chance. Glad I did! It was great, same feeling of magic and micheiviousness that the original had. I think a kid would have the same reaction to this one that I had to the original. Theres many nods to the original which was fun. You can tell Chalamet studied Wilder, much of the same mannerisms, the same quirkiness. Is he as good as Wilder, well no, but who is? He comes close and I think believable as a young Wonka, really couldn't ask for more.
I do agree with some of the other reviewers about the songs, they didn't grab me and I would not be able to sing even a line of one of them from memory. I remember after seeing the original I knew bits and pieces after just the one viewing. But if thats the biggest flaw I think they did pretty good! Won't be surprised to see it pull a few awards. Also I will be buying it on DVD for my Willy Wonka collection when it's available. I am very happy with this prequel and will be glad to include collectibles from it to my Wonka Wall!
Quantum Leap (2022)
Happy to be wrong
I was a big fan of the original series, watched it faithfully every week. I really didn't want to see this new series made but I'm not the kind of person who talks down a show without seeing it so I checked it out. I'm loving it, Love seeing Ernie Hudson, Love that it's a continuation and not a remake. I love how they have worked Sam and Al into it.
I kind of like that we see more of whats happening back at home. The intregue of why Ben jumped without telling anyone and that map of jumps adds to it for me. My theory is that destination on the map is where they find Sam. Cameo by Scott Bakula would be amazing!
Sure theres places where writing and acting could be improved but it's a new show finding it's way. Not only that but it's got big shoes to fill. There will always be fans of the original show that won't be happy because it's not the original show, it's something new, judge it on it's own merit. I am only on episode six but watching two episodes a night so should be caught up soon.
Studio 666 (2022)
Schlocky fun
I'll start by saying I am not a Foo Fighters or Dave Grohl fan, they're ok but not favorites of mine. However after seeing the trailer I was looking forward to seeing this. I grew up in the 80s and love that blend of rock & horror, also love schlock and low budget special effects. This movie is all that.
It's like Monster Dog & Black Roses had a baby! Rock band, satanic song, demonic possession and lots of bright red blood. What more could one want? It was a bit slow in the beginning but overall I enjoyed it.
The Unholy (2021)
Disappointed
The idea was really good, but the execution fell short. It put me in mind of the religious horror films from the 70s but it just didn't quite pull it off. There was so much more they could have done with it but they didn't. The trailers made it look amazing, but it was just adequate.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't horrible. It just wasn't anything special. The acting by JDM and the girl who plays Alice was very good. I would have liked to have seen their dynamic explored a bit more. They obviously felt a kinship, but why?
I don't usually include spoilers in reviews but two things really bugged me about this movie. First off the date they hung the witch was 1845? That was 20 years before the civil war, I don't think witches were still a big thing then. Would have been much more believable if it had been 1645, around the time of the witch trials. The other thing is Mary was only able to manifest through her decedents so when Alice dies, Mary dies. Then JDM goes and prays Alice alive again and she comes back to life. Doesn't that open the door for Mary to come back as well? Maybe they just did it for a sequel but it kind of defeats the whole point of the story. Unless the point is supposed to be that JDMs character always screws things up.
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Great time killer
I thought the acting was pretty good, the action was great, some pretty brutal scenes that actually made me cringe a bit. The tension was addictive, I found myself wanting a snack from the kitchen but not wanting to pause the movie. Overall a good watch
I get what other reviewers are saying about things that weren't explained but I liked that. We don't need everything spoon fed to us, use your imagination a bit. If they had tied it up at the end with a heres all the info about what the dad found I would have hated that more.
God Incorporated (2019)
Sneak peek
Just saw this through a sneak peek type site where we watch and rate. They called it by a different title but i found it here by the actors and no doubt it's the same movie. I didn't expect to like it but figured it would pass the time on a snowy night. I actually ended up really liking it.
I thought the idea was pretty original, there were some tropes like the morman kid getting drunk and learning to curse but tropes are tropes because they work so wasn't a bad thing. Seemed a bit lower budget then a blockbuster so thinking it might be a hulu or netflix type of movie. It's well done though, I watched straight through which is unusual for me. Kept me interested start to finish.
I didn't know any of the actors but they were all pretty good, believable. There was also a bit in the credits that I enjoyed.
Greatland (2020)
Need more shrooms!!
The only reason this movie didn't get a ten from me is that I would love to watch it again in an enhanced state. Unfortunately I gave that up a long time back so it will have to remain a nine for me.
When leftist ideals go to the extreme! You too can marry a tree and have a rabbit for a son, we must be all inclusive. The few who dare question this are either sent to repentance island or tagged for resurrections. The sad part though is the majority would rather live in this world where they are told what to eat, who (or what) to marry, and how to think, than a world of freedom that might just be a bit scary.
I didn't know either of the young leads, Arman Darbo and Chloe Ray Warmoth, but thought they both did a nice job with their characters. Bill Oberst Jr. and Eric Roberts each have small parts that they play quite well. Bill does creepy so well!!
This movie sums up 2020 quite nicely and if you want to put the thought into it you will find a lot of parallels. And if you don't want to put a lot of thought in to it you can just look at the pretty colors. Either way, strap in, you're in for a hell of a ride.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Don't settle
Love & Monsters - Just see it! It's an end of the world love story with monsters. Got a few laughs in it and gets you wound up in the characters. Acting is good, production is good. There really is nothing bad I can say about this movie. It's a feel good family type flick. I think there were a few curse words and a few people get gulped by monsters but it's done in a fun way. If I had kids I'd let them watch it.
When I finished watching I had that same good feeling I've gotten with movies like Jumanji or Goonies. It's the kind of movie you'd walk out of a theater with a grin on your face thinking "that was fun"
Oh yeah and Michael Rooker is in it so thats a plus
Utopia (2020)
Guess you never forget your first
I really liked this show. I was curious after I finished and came to IMDB to read up and couldn't believe the low score it had. When I read reviews though it seems everyone who didn't like it were fans of the original uk one. I get that, it's like book vs movie, usually whichever you experience first will remain your favorite. Just felt it was wrong for them to knock this one for it.
So then still curious I found the UK one to watch, I'm on episode 4 but it doesn't grab me like this one did. I feel this version builds the characters more. Our Jessica Hyde is much better as is our Arby with his sociopathic innocence! And Ian & Becky, theres just no chemistry in the UK version. Wilson Wilson was good in both I thought. And UK version has no Sam?? Whats with that? Some people mentioned the great music in the UK version so I kept my ears open, can't say I was impressed.
I really liked the opening of the American one much better, how Utopia was found, how it got into Grants hands etc. Maybe its just more Americanized for us but what can I say, I'm American.
Rent-a-Pal (2020)
Mommys little helper
Movie itself was decent, took awhile to get into it. And it wasn't really what I thought it was going to be, I wouldn't really call it a horror or even a thriller. Last 15-20 minutes gets a bit crazy but thats it. It's more like drama with an edge. Wheaton is always a fun watch, and dude that plays crazy man plays it well. The mom with dementia is scary good.
I honestly can't say I liked this movie but may be more where I am in life than anything else. Just last week we decided that it will be this year that mom moves in with me. The accurate portrayal by the lady playing mom was scarier to me then anything else in the film! It was well done though and accomplished what it set out to so I give it an 8
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Most bodacious!
Got to see an advance screening! Bill & Ted Face The Music - Most Excellent! I was really afraid what they were going to do with this movie, would the PC it up? I already knew the sons had become daughters so it made me a bit wary of it. They did ok explaining that I guess. The girls do a good job, the one that plays Thea really has the Ted moves down but it's kinda creepy on a girl. I think they'll carry on the torch fine if thats the plan.
It was corny, dumb and predictable..... Exactly what I was hoping for!! If you're a fan of the original B&T movies you'll like it, if you weren't or if you haven't seen them, I'm not sure why you'd go see this one. You might like it but you'll miss a lot of references. It's kind of like the same story but not really. I guess all I'm saying is I enjoyed it and felt it was worthy of the B&T name
Only bad part of seeing it early is now I've got nothing to look forward to this weekend.
Unhinged (2020)
Stressed!!
Unhinged - Pretty damn good! Or maybe just the fact I haven't been to a theater in 6 months. Today was their first day open so I had to go see something. If you like high tension psycho thrillers, you'll like this movie! The beginning was a bit slow and I was afraid it was going to be a dud but then theres this one scene at a gas station that makes you go dayem and it ramps up to 11 and never stops til the end!
Not a lot of plot really but I didn't want anything I had to really think about a lot. Some dumb decisions and places where you go why the hell did she do that but if not for those scenes we wouldn't have very long movies would we?
Theres a few downright brutal scenes, even made me cringe a bit and I'm a horror movie fan. Russel Crowe played crazy dude really well. He made his eyes look so dead at times and then crazed. Believable and scary!
If you're looking for award winning, skip it. If you just want something fun to remind you what going to the movies is like, this will do the trick!
Brave New World (2020)
Everyone is happy
I'm happy with it. I have read the book but it's been a long time. I thought of rereading it before watching this series but decided against that. I'm glad because most of the bad reviews seem to be because it strayed from the book. I am however going back to read it now that I've finished.
So, book aside, I really enjoyed this series. After the first episode I thought, well that didn't really grab me, but I'm intrigued to see what they do with it/ I'll give it til the end of episode 3. By then I was hooked. They did, like most shows focus a bit too much on the love stories. I suppose if I went to their Facebook page there'd be teenagers talking about who they "ship" (where the heck did that term come from anyway???) but some of it was needed to understand the motivations.
Overall it was a fun ride, made me think and had some nice visuals. Maybe thats not enough for everyone but it works for me.
Take This Lollipop (2011)
I miss this
Not really a movie per say, more of an interactive experience. It pulls your info from your FB profile and injects it so that you are the victim being stalked, very surreal and kind of creepy! This was where I first remember seeing Bill Oberst Jr. who has become one of my favorite actors because of it. I would go back and do this over and over to see what different info it would pull. Funniest was when it showed my friends and one was Bill Oberst Jr! Yes he is on my FB friends list now, very awesome dude and it was because of this little project that I discovered him.
BTW I don't know what this guy who gave it a 2 is talking about,he mentions people rambling on but there are no other people, just the main character and as for talent, dude can creep you out in less than three minutes, thats talented in my book. But to each their own I guess.
I really miss this and think it's a shame it's not still going on.
Proximity (2020)
but honestly
I'd give this a 7/10 but it seems a lot of reviewers rated it low because of the religious part. I guess it goes against their beliefs and ruined the whole movie for them. Thats too bad because it was actually a decent movie. Not great but decent. I'm not religious but that part didn't bother me. I mean if I'm going to suspend my belief enough to believe aliens coming to earth then I can suspend it enough to believe it's for religious knowledge.
Like others mentioned production value was good as was the acting. The story was fun. I was totally getting a CE3K vibe from it but it kind of fell apart. and the whole thing with the android motorcycle cops was a bit weird. Like they're cruising around Costa Rica, going in bars and on trains and no one notices them? I would have rather it just been government agents tracking them down, thats scary enough.
So it wasn't a CE3K, it's not going to be remembered as one of the grets, but it's fun and if the religious part doesn't bug you too much I think you'll be left with a good feeling from it.
Lyle (2014)
It was just ok
Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Just ok. I just felt they could have done so much more with it. The landlady, at first she thinks shes behind it all but then at the end it's shown she wasn't even a part of it as shes led away being asked you always wanted a baby of your own didn't you. Would have loved to have seen a "one year later" showing the landlady rocking a baby.
The beginning was boring and weird, then it got interesting and had a bit of tension, but the ending just lacked. A bit more in the middle about these so called deals would have been great. So would an ending where we know if she got out of there or not. I know, people say these kind of movies are so you can make up your own mind but I don't want to. When I sit down to watch a movie I want the film maker to tell me a story. One that includes a beginning a middle and an ending.
5/10 won't bother seeing it again
Villains (2019)
It's not great
Nope it's not great and I really wanted it to be. From the trailers ahead of time I expected it to be one of those quirky oddball kinda movies. The kind that when you meet someone who's seen it and liked it you bond over it because there's not many of you out there. But no, I can't even say where it went wrong, it was ok, but just ok, it should have been better but it was missing something.
I will say the acting from everyone was on point! The production, editing, all that was great. Story was a fun twist to the normal home invasion type thing. So why wasn't it great? I honestly can't figure it out. It just didn't get there. I'm glad I saw it as was waiting for it to hit online, then I kind of forgot about it. Found it tonight and was all kinds of happy. Now I'm just kinda....... meh.
Vivarium (2019)
I hate this kind of movie......... but........
What a weird, odd but somehow enthralling movie. It really should have been boring but somehow it kept me interested the whole time. I'm not sure why. And it's the kind of movie I usually hate because you get no real answer at the end. Theres a lot of things that maybe they were trying to say about suburbia life and such, maybe trying to be artsy, but I never really care about that kind of thing, yet again I liked it.
Maybe it's got to do with the isolation part. I watch this and think hey, our isolation ain't bad. If you haven't seen it and you like quirky weird movies give it a whirl, might grab you like it did me.
Lucan (1977)
Loved this show
I was 10 or 11 when this came out and it was my favorite show while it was on. Unfortunately it didn't last long. I was so disappointed when it didn't come back. Like so many other shows of that era it focused on an outsider (a good guy) who was just trying to find his place in the world. Bad guys from evil organizations pursued for their own nefarious reasons. I guess it just wasn't different enough to capture a large enough audience. If they'd been smart they would have done more marketing towards the pre teen girls like myself because that Kevin Brophy was a hottie!
So yes its outdated and kind of corney but if you enjoy shows from that era, the ones with a moral every week, that the whole family could sit and watch, you'll enjoy this one. Maybe my 10 is for nostalgias sake but it was well done for that type of show.
Flight of the Melvin (2011)
fun
Short, sweet and to the point. I enjoyed this little short. It had an early 80s flavor of the hero kid. I think the music added a lot to that flavor, that triumphant hero type music. It's 7 minutes so not a lot to write on it, just if you've got 7 minutes to fill this is a good way of filling it.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Kill it and hope it doesn't reanimate!
I can't believe with the names that were in this movie it could be so bad! I saw the trailer and the names in it and thought this would be right up my ally. Boy was I wrong. I get what they were trying to do but it just didn't work. Bill Murray with his dry humor and deadpan stare, man I love the guy, but not in this, even he couldn't save it.
Theres just no point to it. It was put out there like it was a horror comedy, it's not scary or creepy and its definitely not funny. The writing is bad, the pacing is bad, the jokes (if thats what they are) are bad. the build up some characters like the kids from Cleavland but why? They had no part in the story. And what about the kids in the detention center? What even happened to them? The UFO.... yeah not even getting into the stupidity of that. If done right it could have been quirky and fun, it wasn't and it isn't.
This is the first time since Mr. Hush many years ago I really feel like I wasted my time on a movie. I can usually find some redeeming quality. not here
The Boy (2016)
Poor sad Brahms
Tonight's movie, in preparation for seeing Brahms:The Boy II I felt I had to see the first one. Glad I did. It was creepy enough having a seemingly haunted/possessed doll but the twist on this movie got me. I was not expecting that. I figured it wasn't straight forward and I figured there was going to be the twist but I had my money on the grocery guy. I love when I can't guess the twist in a movie!
And all these 1 star reviews saying it's unoriginal and that they saw the twist I say BS. A possessed doll, yeah thats pretty unoriginal but that twist, I'm usually good at seeing them coming and i didn't see that. And i don't think many others did either (no matter what they claim)
Reminds me of a movie called Bad Ronald that I saw when I was young. I think that was a TV movie so this was allowed to do a bit more. Bad Ronald was a favorite when I was young.
I'm now really looking forward to The Boy II :)
