This is a great role for Jeremy Renner and he, no doubt, excels at it. The acting in the show, for the most part, is excellent. It's shot exceptionally well and the dialogue is written well. The problem that I have is the overall story, it's so far from reality it's hard to stop thinking about it. I keep trying to tell myself that's it's fantasy and to just sit back & enjoy the show, but it's very hard sometimes. The character, Mike, is somehow more powerful than the mayor, police chief, & warden of the local prison yet the viewer can't even be sure what Mike's occupation even is. Taylor Sheridan became a favorite after watching Hell Or High Water & especially Wind River, but the TV shows are getting very overdramatic. I don't know, maybe I can finally turn the reality off and just enjoy the show like many of the Yellowstone fandom and just rubber stamp everything Sheridan does. It's tough living in the real world, though, and watching his shows that are supposed to exist in the real world & it be believable. They are not.
I've seen this movie so many times that I can't count. The more you watch it, the more you realize how much of an exercise in human emotion and self evaluation that it is. This is such a beautiful film that will stand the test of time, and the performances are outstanding. It's just a beautiful, comforting film. They don't make them like this anymore. When it first came out, I remember that it was criticized for the repetitiveness. When you really dig in, you realize that it has to be that way so that the character can finally get it right.
It's such an understated film about our purpose & existence and what we can do to control it. This is also a tailor made film for Bill, he absolutely kills it. This will be shown on AMC in the not to very future on repeat, as it should. Just when you thought a innocuous comedy was coming your way, you get hit with a sublime & truly deep work of art.
