David Brent: Life on the Road (2016)
A mediocre, forgettable affair
Disappointment of the year. An utterly forgettable movie. There is no way I would ever re-watch it, especially since the funniest moments have been shown to death through Gervaises social media channels as promotion during the last few months so those are old already before you get the see the movie. There really aren't that many more of them sadly.
The movie is off, unbalanced and weird. Brent is not the cocky, funny and awkward guy we know but a desperate and sad character. He risks everything hes got, literally cashing in his pension in order to follow a pipe dream to make it in the music industry. I think you can guess how that goes.
He is still after 20 years only a sales rep, thus removing the enormous comic value of him being "the worst boss in the world" from the series. Without authority, Brent just another unpopular co-worker that people ignore and downright bully in the movie. There is none of the "I have to pretend I like him since he is my boss" that made the series so awesomely cringeworthy.
Brent would confuse that with actual popularity and the rest is TV history. Brent has to have the fake unnatural respect from his surroundings only an office environment can provide a bad boss in order to fully work as a character. It baffles me Gervais didn't see this and gave him a promotion to mid-manager for the movie.
The side characters range from one dimensional props to downright unpleasant and awful. The ending is lazy and unmotivated.
Its basically a movie about a sad man being bullied while dropping exaggerated cringe worthy lines without the wonderful subtleness from the show with a lame ending, a parody of David Brent stuck inside a lame repetitive story.
It could have been SO much better.
Limitless (2015)
Such a shame and a waste
I absolutely loved the movie and have seen it multiple times. It was creative, intuitive, beautifully shot and with a combination of dark humor and just general darkness that made it irresistible.
This show has none of that. Basically, the only thing it has in common is the NZT pill.
The thing that made the movie interesting in regards to NZT, is how the main character was not only able to out-think even the most impossible predicaments, it also opened his mind to grand schemes and plans - basically to take over the world.
Here, our guy on NZT is still the silly joker living day by day and honestly not that clever even on NZT. Sure, he can see patterns in numbers but thats just lazy writing. He doesn't think ahead like a chess game, outsmarting every single situation he is in or unexpected obstacle he meets. Instead, he spends his time making drawings, clay dolls or useless visual aids like signs hanging from the ceiling. He is also forgetful, for example he totally forgets that hes got a 12 hour limit on NZT - it took a guy NOT on NZT to remind him of that.
As a generic "crime of the week" show, its extremely lame. Every clue is right there where its supposed to be, every case is conveniently closed without any mistakes, detours or problems. Its cringe worthy and just so, so bad.
I was excited about this show, thinking it would continue in the same path as the movie did - grand schemes, battle of NZT giants among the ants who are not on NZT and answers to the big questions of humanity.
Instead we get a silly dude making videos for himself or coming up with stuff that honestly, any MIT-level smart guy could come up with. In half the cases, his NZT brilliance is just normal smart-person thinking, like how to create a distraction in order to escape a room.
I guess its true what they said in the movie, NZT works best if you're already smart.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
No way near as good as i could have been
No people, this show is not genius nor brilliant. To give this 10 stars..what do you then give truly great shows?
I am a lover of no laugh track situational comedies such as Parks and recreation and Weeds. This show looked promising at first but unfortunately failed to deliver. It lacks the intelligence and charm necessary to make a show like this work, and instead goes for a slap stick silly type of comedy that just makes it plain stupid.
It truly is a silly sit-come but with the laugh track removed. Me and my girlfriend found ourselves cringing when it was obvious we were supposed to laugh out loud.
The characters are overly exaggerated and I don't feel any love for them nor interest in them. I watched a few episodes and then gave it a pass, I just cant enjoy such over the top silly BS after enjoying truly great comedy shows such as Parks.., Louie, curb your enthusiasm and more. 6/10.
Alcatraz (2012)
Not even hang-over Sunday worthy
Yes, i give it one star. A broken car with a really expensive paint job is still just a broken car.
I don't think i have ever been as disappointed by a show before. Its been widely marketed as "the new lost", however this show doesn't even come close to the atmosphere and gripping mystery of the first couple of Lost seasons before it, IMO, spun out of control.
As a sci-fi nerd, one of the coolest things about "people from he past wake up in the future" themes is how they react to and interact with the new and undoubtedly strange world they find themselves in. We see nothing of this in here. One of the criminals, having spent roughly 2 hours in the present time, told some guy to "put his phone away" referring to his cell phone. I think that says it all. Whats next, they go on twitter in an internet café and brag about their crimes? The female cop lead looks like shes 18 years old and is completely un-likable. The fat guy from lost adds some comic relief, however although he is supposed to be some genius doctor of criminology, in the show he just scripted as the fat guy from lost.
I think my major gripe with the show is the lack of present-meets-past. The criminals act like they have been traveling 5 years in time, not 45.
I stopped caring after 5 episodes.
Jackass 3D (2010)
Jackass have outlived their existence
I really enjoyed the Jackass series on MTV. It felt new, fresh, cool and shocking. The fascination you felt for these cool dudes (who didn't wanna be Knoxville?) combined with the novelty of shock value on TV was irresistible. The first movie was a nice extension to that. The scene where the guy poops in a toilet store remains one of the funniest bits I've seen in this genre.
Now, however, both me and the Jackasses are older. These "dudes" are pushing 40, some probably over 40. Nothing wrong with that, but what we see here is the opposite of what made the original Jackass irresistible: The guys are old, the stunts have been seen before, some of them have drug/drinking problems, etc. There is a sadness to it all. Its mildly entertaining but also somewhat embarrassing. I understand the "dudes" need cash but i would really want to see them come up with something different that just wearing a ballerina skirt and punching each-other in the face. That was fun 10 years ago, not so much now.
The midgets in the bar was indeed a nicely made candid camera scene. So was the simplicity of the fat man leaving his dog with a guy on the street. None are movie-worthy though, there are funnier TV-shows that do the same.
Nah, guys, don't ever grow up but please..re-invent yourself for the next one.
Göta kanal 2 - Kanalkampen (2006)
Made me sick
This is not a movie. This is a bad draft of a bad script directed by a bad director. I seriously considered asking for my money back.
The movie is bad on so many levels, but as i just saw it and are still upset i have to get a few things of my chest so i can sleep tonight without nightmares.
. When she shoots the firework, where does the firework go? . Why did the bartender put the Viagra shot back on the counter? . Isn't the canonist supposed to fall into the water? Whats the fun otherwise? - Why the elements of violence? - Why the aggravated upset screaming that are not comic but just bad acting? - Why not making something funny out of härenstanms mud Hitler mustache - the only time i actually smiled in the movie? - Why not delete jokes that are so obviously lame it ruins the flow, like the taking away of the ladder? - Whats up with the two depressing girls with coffee and fishing? - He's not Italian - hes like Turkish! Italians don't wear gold chains and tacky stuff. - When the guy gets real drunk, why have him saying something negative, why not something pathetic to make it FUNNY? - Why, oh why, are people in the movie angry looking 90% of the time? - Why did the cop steal the Ferrari? Is that funny? And why the *** didn't the Italian guy take his bike, that would actually be pretty funny. - What was up with the couple in the sailboat? What was their purpose? - Why did the nerdy guy hook up with the Filmer? We don't like the nerdy guy! We must like him to like them falling in love! - The snuff scene is disgusting and stupid and makes you NOT fall in "movie-love" with the girl. - Why just relying on accents being funny without actually people saying something funny, like when the couple recognizes the limo driver on the paparazzi-shot. - HOW did she get to buy the dog? Did she turn around and go after the car with the dog? - The gay guy with the dog was the only funny character in the movie. - Why choose a director with obviously no sense of humour him self. This is "comedy" according to a child, plus spoiled by negative energy, violence and screaming. - Why a "race", they meet up at every "sluss" anyways? - Why would people watch such a boring docusope, with no elements of voting out people or drama. - Girls Don't whats docusoaps because of sex, they do it because of drama and relationship related stuff - guys like sex. - Even if they had have sex, where was the person to shoot it?
Yiiiikes! Don't do it, don't see it. Ever.
Puerto Vallarta Squeeze (2004)
What???
Are we talking about the same movie? This movie is totally ridiculous, the plot is disgusting and completely without logic. Its a typical straight to DVD/TV-movie including all the necessary ingredients for a horrible movie experience: Over-acting by has been actors, side steps from the plot that are left unexplained, THE GIRL SHOWS HER T*ts(why, god, why??), people do not react to things as they would in real life. I'm not even gonna bother you with details, it would take all night. Well, OK, just one: If two people were murdered in front of you as you were walking down the street, one of the victims practically dies in your arms, his blood spurts from his head-wound all over you, would your first concern be; "Oh, he left the world and the last thing he saw was my angry face!"? My thoughts goes to Harvey and his lost career.
