So after watching "Better Man" which is 2024/2025 Film of the year, and a solid 10/10.
I was looking forward to this film about Bob Dylan. Sadly, I rated it 2 /10.
There are several problems: first I could barely make out a word Timothy said. I don't care if its character accurate - that I don't know. But I'm watching a movie and he is slurring ALL his words. I barely made out a full sentence. This is a movie and their choice to ruin the dialogue made this work to listen through.
The main character is highly unlikeability, Affairs aside, he is just a grumpy man. At no point do we see him smile, even with three girls that love him. A movie should be an emotional rollercoaster. You have the negative depressing side and see them bounce back. In this film, he never bounces back. He just gets grumpier and never seems happy.
He didn't even seem to enjoy performing so why was he continuing? We never find out. It depressing to watch and so the audience leave the theatre bored and upset.
It has zero energy. Better Man has amazing energy throughout. Rocket Man had some magic to it. This felt like going through the motions.
All the selected song choices sounded identical and some were only briefly heard as he came up with them, but then never sung.
Again, Better Man make the songs part of the narrative and the lyrics tell us a chunk of time from his life. So the musical pieces have purpose. Here, they are just him singing; they don't have any emotion or reason for why he is singing them. We never learn about the inspiration for the lyrics or what inspires him. It's just lifeless poetry on a piece of paper.
The time span was weird. Three lovers we know about. One of which suddenly appeared for one scene and was never seen again. It was though pages of script were removed from the edit.
His turn against Pete was never explained. There was clearly a story here that could have been explored, but it's as though the real Pete read the script and asked for his character to be rewritten to be more likeable, in a way that is not realistic. There was a conflict story here that if they focused on, could have been the driving force behind the plot.
Instead the film has none and just treads water.
I read somewhere that it spans 5 years? When it seems more 15, yet the actor never ages. He changes clothes and that's it.
And he starts acting like he has a substance abuse problem but again, they edited out all those scenes which might have shown it. Where is the drama?
Pages of the script appear to be thrown out here as well.
In the end, it's by the numbers and filtered through so many people's editing choices that it doesn't make compelling viewing.
I will add that i'm British and was unfamiliar with Bob Dylan when going in. I watched it as a bio-pic fan. I think it needed someone not familiar with him to be involved in the production process; someone just there to make a good film.

It makes no sense. How does a CGI singing Chimp bring a middle aged man to tears? But it really is one of the best films of the year, definitely in the top 3. And that's not just me saying me. Check out all these reviews that all say it's amazing.
I know convincing people to pay to see it is tough, the mere concept sounds weird. But it works. This is art. He is a monkey for a reason and it works.
Go into this movie with an open mind and you will be rewarded with an emotional rollercoaster that is an absolute joy to watch.
