I don't know the budget on this movie but it probably wasn't huge. They spent it well. The first half of the movie builds atmosphere and character. Then it takes off and doesn't let up until it's over. There cast is small, and they only use a few locations to shoot, but it looks good and the acting is good. The special effects are practical and used sparingly. The is some well-done body horror and the connections to the Lovecraft mythos is apparent but not overdone. There aren't a lot of jump scares. I really enjoyed it.
I could pick this movie apart without trying to hard, but why? It did what it was supposed to. I was a decent, popcorn action flick. The action scenes were plentiful and well done. The acting was overall good although a bit uneven. There was a plot, sort of. The hero had a backstory, I think. He was going through things. The female lead also had a backstory and was going through things. I didn't matter, because there wasn't much of what you could call character development. The one complaint I had was the fighting ability of the lead character. His skill seemed to be on a sliding scale depending on what the script needed.
This movies features some awesome action scenes. There isn't much plot, barely enough to string between action scenes. It slows down in a spot or two, once pretty bad. It's kind of a throwback to the action movies of the 80's, without the tongue-in-cheek humor. The acting is very good, especially for a straight action flick based on a graphic novel.
