Silo (2023)
First season
Silo falls into Sci-fi category of forgotten past. There is a small community (here 10000) living somewhere in isolation that follows arcane procedures whose reasons and origins are lost/suppressed in history. Predecessor are too numerous to list here. I will only mention the earliest I remember. Non-stop by Brian Aldiss written in 1958 (sic!). There is also virtually identical Polish movie Sexmission from 1983 (also shown in the US. In Sexmission we have a postapocaliptic future with a small community surviving in a huge silo convinced Earth is contaminated by a nuclear fallout and afraid to venture out. I hope you get a picture. Mercifully, Sexmission is a comedy gently poking fun at excessive feminism, and thus 90 minutes it takes pass quickly with frequent laughter.
Not so Silo. It takes itself seriously. And deadly so. Why? I do no not know as it is not particularly profound. We also have to understand it adheres to current orthodoxy of moviemaking, meaning all women are strong and decisive. They can also fly. All men are weak and duplicitous. And they cannot hold alcohol. Obviously all children are above the average. Curiously, this convention coincides with that of adult movies, where all lead characters are female and they carry the action, while men serve as mere props best ignored for our viewing pleasure.
Once we accept the current literary convention and remember that of we reverse sexes of leading characters the plot would remain the same, and we also ignore troublesome lack of originality, the series is watchable and provides nice distraction from daily troubles.
The watching pleasure is ruined by the fact, that as I assume even those not familiar with Sci-fi literature can easily guess within first half an hour where the plot leads to and how the series will end. I think creators of the series also reclined they made a mistake of being to obvious and some time after episode two plot is going sideways. It looks like they got and order for ten episodes but realized they only had material for two. So they kept adding all sort of information that was at best tangential to the main story. I have to give them that rabit was a nice touch.
As for the rest, Sci-fi is only as good as the world created by the writer. Any lack of logic makes one feel cheated. Silo is no exception. Here is my more or less random list of inexplicable but important for the plot elements.
- Why silo has no elevator? Even if the original designers forgot to put them, one would think the inhabitants could add some. Instead, we get to watch incessantly people running up and down the spiral staircase.
- Why it didn't occur to the designers of Silo to have staircase railings at least five feet tall? As things stand, they are only waste up. I for one would certainly trip over and fall down few hundred yards after having few drinks.
- Where the replacement bulbs for the lighting are coming from? The total population is, as we are reminded constantly, 10,000 strong. Obviously it did not occur to screen writers that modern lightning bulbs require multiple brunches of advanced industrial society. I can assure them that this exceeds capabilities of few thousand workers.
- Where chickens lived? We see people frying fresh eggs? Where was the chicken farm? We only see cornfield and apple orchard (duplicating as a graveyard, again, given.population size we would expect 150 death/year, where all these people were buried? I'm an orchard that has 20 trees?).
- What happens to the waste produced by the population? Is there an underground river? It remains a mystery, What about moisture produced by all these people? It would go up and turn into precipitation.
- Why people send outside (presumably to die) are dressed in an expensive and tailor made hazmat suits? I would send in speedos, that would shorten their suffering.
I could continue in this manner for quite so etimr, but I think I made my point. Very little in the series survives scrutiny. While it is reasonably entertaining and it held my attention, it falls into category of guilty pleasure. After substantial budget was allocate to CGi, I wish somebody read critically the script. If somebody responsible for TV+ productions is reading it, I can volunteer to help you for a very modest fee.
Infinite (2021)
Alexa, turn it off!
It worked.
I lasted for about an hour. I love sci-fi, but this is more like a bad comics. There is no sci, there is no fi. The sad thing was that the more I watched the less curious I was how it would end. I also became concerned that I would wake up and the movie would start from the beginning.
While I've seen worse, I've seen better and also much better.
And now please repeat after me to get the quota fulfilled. .

Chernobyl (2019)
Quite correct
For a series that is meant to be entertainment the series is surprisingly correct as far as technical detail of the disaster are concerned. It is a rare feast to have a TV series that makes physics and engineering details not only correct but also fascinating. The writers also avoided a common trap of being didactic.
I have to admit I fast forwarded the entire subplot about domestic pets and in my modest view there should be a warning.
The general atmosphere of Soviet times was depicted well, even though British (and also American) depiction of courtroom theatrical drama might have been tad too much.
The actors were selected well. For some reason the main physicist looked and behaved like Shostakovich, which I presume was not intended.
Occasionally Russians speaking with British accents were causing me discomfort, but I understand it is British series and short of hiring Russian speaking actors there is no good way around it. Sometimes one can hear Russian (announcements) and definitely adds to the authenticity. Maybe watching version dubbed in Russian (if available) with subtitles would be a better choice.
Odwilz (2022)
Grand theft
The story could be potentially engaging if not for the extreme lack of originality. It is obvious from the get go that it is Polish attempt to make a Scandinavian criminal noir series. Gloomy landscape dotted by shipyard cranes, nondescript weather compounded by the lack of sunshine (I noticed sun once for 37s at the end of the first season). Is it winter? It is cold as everybody parades in jackets, even though unlike in Scandinavian series they take them off indoors. Maybe it is spring? The title suggests as much, but there is no snow or ice on the river. So maybe the Berlin would thaw her relations with everybody else in the series but ni, she is as acerbic in closing scenes as she was at the beginning.
More to the point, I strongly suggest to HBO to establish a quality control department. While I understand not every series can be a breakthrough, it cannot be built almost exclusively from borrowings. A single policewoman (or man) raising a child and not being able to reconcile work responsibilities with parenthood demands? I am surprised nobody ever thought about it before! An emotionally unstable policeman living along in an RV somewhere on a water edge? Brilliant! There are certainly no other movies that would explore this idea. Here it is unintentionally hilarious as given the depicted climate I would like to see this fellow in his RV during long winter nights or at least his heating bills. Nothing in the movie looks like Southern California. Or a redhead policewoman descending to a police station dungeon to extract from a human flesh eating monster location of a victim. Here Polish moviemakers must be onto something as nobody older than 10 years would think the scene is not original.
After awhile watching the series became tedious as I was trying to guess the source at each new scene.
Overall, not worth time investment. Nothing to see here.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
Stupefying
Due to sheer level of boredom it induces. As often is the case with similar movies, there is much effort put into convincing the viewer that something profound is going to happen right this very moment. We get unsettling music, meaningful stares, but then nothing really happens. Worse yet, nothing happens that we haven't seen (or read) before, only in a more convincing and engaging manner.
I have to admit I did not care much for Herbert's book that I attempted to read around 1970 and I don't think I've seen 1984 movie in its entirety as I found it gross. So it would seem I am immune to the allure to this particular Sci-fi genre. For one, I did not find references to Arab culture all that engaging and I did not see any point to it. Second, the idea that in distant future in technologically highly advanced cultures disputes between adversaries will be settled by a kick in the groin is outright grotesque.
Is there anything I liked about the movie? Yes, the sand. And there is plenty of it.
Das Signal (2024)
No and no
I could not find anything better to watch so against my better judgment I decided to give it a try. And another try. And yet another try. In the first hour there was enough action to fill the trailer. Then at the beginning of the second hour I heard "Enlightenment was freeing man from self-imposed immaturity". After I recovered from the shock caused by this unexpected illumination I had to rewind 30 seconds and listen again to make sure it wasn't the voice of aliens sounding in my head. No, this and some more was indeed declared in the movie and surprisingly nobody laughed.
My modest suggestion to my German friends is why don't you stick to subjects you know, like WWII (Das Boot, Downfall, Stalingrad) and leave sci-fi to Hollywood.
The Spy (2019)
Well known story in slow pace
The story of Eli Cohen reaching high position in Syrian government in early 1960s is well known and I assume most viewers would be familiar with it. I certainly was. I do not know what did I expect from the series under these circumstances. Maybe some newly disclosed and riveting information? Deep psychological insight into the mind of Israeli spy? Nothing of this sort, the series tells the story in a by the book and rather boring fashion. The fact that Eli Cohen was deeply religious (I imagine it must have been large part of his motivation) is barely signaled. The fact that he was sadistically tortured is not mentioned, maybe to avoid offending Syrians, even though these are over 50 years old events. Similarly, fascist underpinnings of Ba'ath movement are not mentioned. It is also a pity that possibly fascinating history of a German/Nazi criminal sheltered by the Syrians and discovered by Cohen was not covered.
Overall, it is an OK series and i do not regret watching it, but it might be more interesting to those not very familiar with history of Eli Cohen.
1899 (2022)
And the point was?
Apparently I am not very smart as I could not understand anything. I detected many borrowings, obviously somebody watched matrix too many times and confused it with Westworld and tried to rescue with Prometheus. However, he forgot that a story should have a point. Moreover, for horror there is nothing scary about it and to pass as Sci-Fi it should make more sense. Why the main story was set in 1899? Why not 1799? Or 1929? If it was 1899, why amazing lady doctor new about electrical impulses in the brain and without loosing a step gave us abbreviated modern theory of memories in the brain and new about neural pathways? Why nobody was surprised to hear about programs? How come they knew modern meaning of simulation and did not think it meant to adopt appearance with intent to deceive, as it did in 1899? On the other hand it must have been 1899 as people were somewhat slow. Most people know only their native language, which does not prevent them from talking to each other in strange hope of being understood. Polish sailor is particularly impressive speaking in Polish to a Chinese girl undeterred by the fact that she could not possibly understand a single word. What he was trying to accomplish? Maybe he hoped she would pick up Polish by the end of the series.
All these problems could be overlooked if not for the fact the story serves absolutely no purpose. It is quite convoluted, but there is no payoff. Lost eight hours. One more warning, many fragments are in exceedingly poor taste, probably added for shock value. However, I was not shocked, I was sick and had to fast forward.
The Terror (2018)
And the point is?
O read the book mainly because I was curious what the author of Hyperion does when he is not writing breakthrough Sci-Fi. Then I watched the TV series. After all the time I invested into it I still don't know what the point is. The story of the arctic expedition is fascinating, I strongly recommend reading Wikipedia entry. It takes 30 minutes tops. I can imagine how a strong fiction novel can be written based on it. However, why center the story around some mythical terror creature? We never learn what the creature was and why today's seamen don't encounter it. Is it supposed to mean something for the haruje population? Is it part of their folklore? I don't think so.
The problem with turning true heroism of XIXc. Sailors who ventured into unknown in rockery ships with no communication means is that it cheapens their effort. The story is horrifying as is, there is no need to try to scare us with some childish monsters.
Reminiscence (2021)
At least try to be coherent.
This is marketed as sci-fi, which should put some demands on movie makers. However, there are many inconsistencies and childish mistakes.
When the movie takes place? Judging from how much ocean level rose one would guess thousands of years in the future. However, mem still wear sits, shirts and ties in a fashion strangely resembling 1970s.
Miami is submerged under water knee deep, but mysteriously electricity works perfectly fine.
Clients submerge in a tank of water appropriately and modestly dressed in gowns, but when a beauty appears she jumps in naked (don't build up your hopes, nothing is shown, it is a PG movie).
The overall assumption is that human memory works like a film, information is stored in our brain frame by frame. Note to screenwriters - this isn't so and people generally know that.
Other than that the pace is slow and the impression is of a syrupy melodrama, so I gave up after 30 minutes.
Bodkin (2024)
Unlikable
Maybe I should not be writing a review as I gave up after two episodes. However, I feel I was a victim in of false advertisement. I started watching expecting lighthearted comedy but there was nothing funny about plodding storyline. The.worst part were three extremely unlikable main characters. The worst hands down was.strained humorless The Guardian journalist. This did nothing to change my opinion about The Guardian itself. For a good measure, the American was a former public broadcasting journalist, who behaved exactly as I would imagine NOR personel to behave in real life. All that drained me after two hours of trying and I gave up.
Cold Blood Legacy (2019)
Second derivative.
Leon the professional had a good number of follow ups. I did not know there was a second generation of follow ups to follow ups. Since the novelty of the original movie is by now all gone I don't know what was the point of making this rump. The plot is incomprehensible and the dialog barely audible. This is probably for the better as one can focus on watching beautiful scenery. Now a spoiler: the wolf survives.
To meet the required minimum length I will repeat what I just wrote as I have no idea what else I could write.

The Killing Fields (1984)
Skimming over complex situation
The Killing Fields were made in 1984 and as far as I can recall quite a lot was already known about the development of Khmer Rouge genocidal regime, its extreme communist ideology and ties to China. Strangely, none of that is reflected in the movie. For a person not very familiar with history of the region key elements of the plot must come as a surprise. Khmer Rouge appear like Deus ex machina and if not for the fact they occasionally wave refuse flags there is no mention of the genesis of the movement or driving ideology. Why they kill their compatriots? They just evicted evil foreigners, so why they would kill other Cambodians? Why they would hate journalists? Why they were attacked by Vietnamese? Weren't Vietnamese their communist brothers?
Instead of giving us some background and heavens forbid deeper insight into the complex situation we are treated to a soppy story about a NYT journalist (who else!!), who sadly cuts rather unsympathetic figure as he will sacrifice friends if that benefits his career. This personal moral shortcoming doesn't stop him from moralizing about the US policy in the region. We are to believe that a journalist that doesn't speak a word of Khmer (nor French for that matter) and after brief stay in Cambodia would come up with a much better geopolitical strategy than all think tanks in Washington combined.
Oddly enough the movie.ends with Lennon's ode to communism, which is as mawkish as the movie itself. As movie closing.credits roll one is left to wonder whether the anachronistically placed song (it was written in 1971) is supposed to reflect director's quite adoration for the ideology or a lament over communism's failings in practical implementations. What Lennon himself would think about it we will never know. I don't even know whether his personal enthusiasm for utopias was tempered by the news about genocide in Cambodia. He certainly lost much enthusiasm for extreme left causes after commercial (and probably artistic) failure of his.1972 political manifesto Some Time in New York City.
3 Body Problem (2024)
By teenagers for teenagers.
The series is based on a book. I remember the book was hailed as a.great accomplishment when it appeared and I put it on my to read list. However, after looking at reviews I decided to postpone it indefinitely. Needless to say, series in Netflix is an opportunity to find out what the fuzz was all about. It begins well and I understand how the opening sequences set in China during cultural revolution might be eye opening. I am not even sure whether any of that is even taught at schools. Maybe history classes are all on intersectionality? Who knows. In any case, from there the series deteriorates rapidly. We encounter supposedly top scientists of Great Britain if not the world. I do not know whether dialogues were lifted from the book or were created for TV, but I can assure creators of the series that high IQ people do not talk like teenagers strolling through the mall in buggy pants and do not have emotional problems lifted from Friends. I also hate to break it to TC "creators", but smoking weed is not top pastime at CERN. The reason is prosaic, it is rather difficult for a stoned person to engage in modern physics. I suspect that operating a lift fork would be a challenge, but operating a cyclotron certainly is.
At this point I actually stopped watching, but after few days I decided to ignore physicists cum deadheads licencia poetica and continue. That was a mistake. It became quite obvious that the whole story was conceived by teenagers and caters to younger viewers who still find the world of computer games more engaging than the actual world. Why highly advance alien civilization would use VR game to communicate information about their native world that could have been communicated within a brief paragraph? Note they are so advanced they have no problem typing in Chinese or Cyrillic. They can wrap half of the Universe into a single proton but their invasion plan is to hire Manson Family. I will be merciful and I will skip the soggy drama of terminal disease, which was probably added as in teenage mind it looks profound. No, it is merely.sentimental and wastes valuable screen time that could be otherwise use to clarify many plot holes.
Finally a warning. There are open ended plot lines. Given the quality of script writing it might have been by neglect, but what worries me is that a sequel might be in the making.
The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
Movie from a bygone era
Thomas Crown was made in 1968 and watching it in 2024 one has an impression that it was the last of its kind closing the golden era of Hollywood movie making. Era in which fake eyelashes were considered charming, actresses on screen always looked like they just stepped out of expensive hairdresser and actors discretely emanated charm of misogyny, which back then was passing for masculinity. Give it another few years and American moviemaking changed quite a bit, probably for the better.
The first part of the movie is mildly amusing, with the development and exe urumi of the heist. Then it very quickly goes downhill. It feels terribly contrived, it is very difficult to imagine anybody behaved like that in real life in 1960s (no they did not, I remember those times).
Finally, it is all but impossible to feel sympathy for main characters. Steeling others' money out of boredom? Maybe for balance they should show couple of retirees who lost lifetime savings in the process. The clairvoyant investigator who immediately guesses who the culprit was is difficult to accept. I for one would want to see a movie in which the guess is incorrect and @smart" investigator doggedly pursues wrong suspect for two hours. That would be much more believable.
World War II: From the Frontlines (2023)
Useless
It is a more or less random collection of well known footage from WWII, by the looks of it much was colorized (in a haphazard fashion, we hear eyewitness talking about black German planes but on screen they are blue for some reason) and noise was suppressed. However, most of it is familiar to people with even passing interest in history and access to YouTube.
Other than that, I can only hope that you get viewers will not confuse it with actual history. For undisclosed reasons events are not presented in chronological order, so narration jumps forth and back. In an "arts" movie it may have its place, but in a documentary it simply leads those not already familiar with the period to confuse causes with effects. Finally, some pivotal events are missing. There is extensive footage of German troops invading Poland, but invasion of their Soviet brothers-in-arms and partition of Poland in September 1939 is not even mentioned. Why?
Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021)
Keep fast forwarding
To scenes of fire. Forest fire should get Oscar for acting. It as menacing, scary, all consuming and yet soothing in an unsettling way. Prime acting! I kept fast forwarding for the first hour as I found "psychological" scenes difficult to bear. I was hoping for a good action movie, not lame psychological drama. Overall the movie did its job, particularly for older guys like me who grew up on the 70s disaster dramas. Hardly believable action is an excuse for scary moments of people burned alive or jumping from burning skyscrapers. In lack of those, sinking ship will do.
Note for the screenwriters: no, jumping into a narrow creek in the middle of a firestorm will not save your life. Fire will suck the oxygen and you will suffocate.
Clark (2022)
Awful
This is in extremely poor taste. It moves from one cringy scene to the next. The opening birth scene gives a good sample of what is coming and a sensible person should stop right there. To my peril I lasted for another 30 minutes or so, until a policeman is murdered, an unpleasant scene immediately followed by some slapstick comedy. It might that in contemporary Sweden that in last decade became gang and crime capitol of Europe shooting a policeman is a good reason to enjoy some bathroom humor, that I don't know. I prefer to think it is not and this series is a rock bottom of Swedish movie making for inexplicable reason selected by Netflix for world to enjoy.
Spy Game (2001)
Strangely boring.
I don't expect spy flicks to be deep psychological dramas with striking realism of scenery and characters, but for crying out loud they cannot be boring. I even swallowed medical doctor immediately ready to kill his patient based on flimsy and obviously fake photographic evidence of crimes, n it sadly I totally lost interest in the plot 3/4 through. I admit I found Redford disappointing. I couldn't escape the impression that his acting style belongs to yesteryears. He tries to be cool and witty, but comes across as pompous. Finally, for a spy flick if one expects amazing action sequences there are none, it is more like a court drama, but without drama.
Het gouden uur (2022)
Something foshy
I do not understand how this show could get 7.5 average rating if almost all written reviews rate it below 5.
Be it as it may, the show is not very good. I have to admit I started watching it hoping to charming cabal streets of Amsterdam, but instead they kept showing very modern police headquarters and some ultramodern shopping mall. Neither was particularly charming. I also saw projects, where i
assume Dutch house their immigrant population, and couple of abandoned warehouses. This is not Amsterdam I visited couple of times and remember fondly.
Since most reviewers mentioned terrible acting I'll give it a pass. What really got to me though was most inept storyline. If this is how Dutch police operates I wonder how anybody there can get a parking ticket. It is also strange that in such an affluent country the police has only one and rather dated helicopter. I would also suggest the Dutch explosives expert to get some protective outfit. Even skiing goggles would help somewhat.
Finally, I am not sure whether the filmmakers ever visited Afganistan, but I can assure them that sepia is not the only color there. They also have blue and red.
DNA do Crime (2023)
Not much to see here
Not much to see here, so unless one has eight hours to kill, it's better to move on. The series has all proper ingredients for chaos and robbers show, but sadly they do not add to much, and certainly nothing original. In a good side, it occasionally grabs attention, on a bad side it also drags from time to time and I found myself skipping scenes that would be more in place in Brazilian soap opera. Potential viewer should be also warned it is the first season so some plot lines are left open.
For a viewer from northern hemisphere who never visited South America locations were on exotic side and quite interesting. I wish they added Iguazu Falls to the mix but sadly not and now I'm afraid I'll havevto travel there to see them. As a depiction of life in this part of the world the show is severely lacking. As often with thrillers of this kind (even Scandinavian) everybody shown is either a cop or a criminal. After few hours of watching I was yearning to see some normal people, you know, those that get up at 7am go to work and then shopping in the afternoon. I cannot believe that the only career choice young people in Brazil have is to become a bank robber. As things stand, we don't even see people walking in streets. As a result, there is a depressing feeling of being in an artificial nowhere land and one is left to wonder where the electricity in Brazil is coming from. Is it imported since nobody works? Finally, it is rather surprising that DNA analysis in criminal investigations is a novelty in Brazil in 2020s. We hear about it as nauseam as though it was invented just few years ago while in fact DNA profiling was introduced in 1980s. I don't know what to make out of this.
Spartacus (2010)
Strictly for young of heart
Strictly for teenagers. Simplistic story line, light on historical content heavy on CGI. Visually attractive to younger viewers who spend days playing animated computer games and who also seem to be desensitized to excessive but gratuitous gore and blood splashing in most unrealistic way. Occasional rewards in terms of nudity (soft porn) and for some reason massively muscled men. The latter is puzzling as I doubt the series would attract many teenage girls.
In terms of disclosure, I gave up after first hour. I was bored and disgusted, which is a rather unusual combination and I give the series credit for making me feel this way.
The Killer (2023)
Please tell me why!
Why this film was made? Why the voice over rambling on and on about state of mind of the main character instead of showing us what he felt? If at least I the thoughts were original but we heard the same ideas before in other much better movies. Occasionally monotony is broken by loud intrusive punk music. I am afraid this ingenious trick is lost on those of us like me who were never aficionados of punkt genre and found in your face playing offensive. I barely managed to half of the movie and after watching for five minutes the main character sneaking through the gardens of his house and then seeing that nothing really happened I gave up. Life's to short to spend it on watching ego trip of a bunch of inept filmmakers.
Ferry: De Serie (2023)
Engaging but lacking originality.
The show itself hovers around 8, it is reasonably short, this decline coiple of slow moments now and then it never gets tedious.in fact, one cannot help.rooting for bad guys, who come across as industrious and honest. The show could use bigger budget as 2-3 interiors and coiple of empty lots quite quickly get repetitive. In addition, I didn't know that Low Countries had such a great climate. It is always sunny and everybody wears short sleeve.
So why only 6/10 after I annoyed the show so much? It happens to be a carbon copy of Breaking Bad. Those of us who know the original be heart can easily predict what will happen in Ferry from one scene to another and I got tired of aligning characters with thidr in Breaking Bad. However, if you are going to steal, steal from the best and Ferty provides coiple of hours of engaging entertainment.
1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything (2021)
Series about music by people who hate music
I was duped into watching it by misleading title. Instead of a story about music influencing or reflecting society in early 70s I was treated to a series of disjoint vignettes in pet issues of the left with music treated as accessory. I never learned why 1971 was supposedly pivotal and not say 1969 or 1973. I did not learn what specifically music changed outside of couple of fads for which couple of musicians provided background music. I watched in disbelief one installment and L-something and women issues, neither of which has any relation to music from 1971. I was 16 that year and I remember quite well seemingly endless stream of great records, many I still play to this day, and how music was new, uplifting and opening new horizons. The authors of the series accomplished something unique - they turned all that into a depressing story in which equal voice is given to music journalists and various activists, some of which I would describe as terrorists. Finally, despite the title music didn't really change all that much in 1971. War in Vietnam didn't end, Nixon won election, Elton John didn't come out this year and so on. What using music for political causes accomplishments was that in just few years all these self-aggrandizing musicians, some of which come across as buffoons, were swept away by happier dance tunes, namely disco. While back then I considered it an affront and end of civilization, watching this series I couldn't help thinking that disco couldn't have come soon enough.
