So... Not a bad start. I was interested. And then the fighting started... And after that it was just fighting - lots of fighting - and after the fighting more fighting. Lots and lots of kicks. Many of them fancy. Lots of chopping. And then more kicks. And it was amazing because the main character was so principled. He seemed utterly committed to fight only with his barehands. Guns and knives were left behind... Anything really that could help him. This guy didn't want them! And it wasn't just him that was amazing. Seriously, some of the guys he fought against were crazy good! One of them kept fighting even after every in one one of his limbs was broken. It was crazy amazing in a wierd kind of way. Wow! So what I am trying to say is this: this was, all in all, one of the most unrealistic (maybe ridiculous) movies I have seen with more nonstop fighting than probably any other movie ever. Have you ever eaten too much? Like way too much? That's how this makes you feel... sooooo much fighting ... But it just keeps on going. So should you watch it? I don't know. It will definitely amuse you, though it doesn't mean to. But if you want anything resembling realism find something else - anything else.
After 4 seasons I can say that watching Poldark is a bit like watching a hamster on a wheel: always the same things repeated ad nauseum and never (ever) any resolution. You will watch as tension and conflict builds always expecting the resolution that must inevitably come. But it never does. The one thing that would redeem this show, the one thing you want so badly to happen never does. And that was and is infuriating. This is a story that began well. Season 1 was just about a 10. But after that it went quickly downhill, with weird (and sometimes perverted) subplots and bad behavior on the part of all, so that by the end of season 4 none of main characters were likeable.
This was such a strange plot. So many inconsistencies. But the worst of it wasn't the unbelievable storyline. The worst of it was the acting.
Taron Egerton was rotten in this role. He held one expression throughout the movie with minor variations: as if always on the verge of tears. There were, of course, variations. Sometimes he seemed closer to tears than others. Sometimes the pain in his face seemed slightly more acute. And that was it. But will he save the day? Will he get out of the mess? Only when it occurs to him to do what occurred to you 20 minutes into the movie. So not the brightest bloke.
