Death on the Nile (2022)
Awful remake
This film was so awful I fell asleep during it and am not going back to rewatch.
Branagh is ruining a well loved Christie character with this made up back story that all who know Poirot know it is not in keeping with the true character created. Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov and David Suchet have all portrayed him brilliantly. I will still rewatch every Christmas the original death on the Nile which is a proper murder mystery filled with drama and excellent scenery.
A lot of miscasting and a rubbish film in comparison. If you want a true sense of the story watch the 1980s film with Peter Ustinov in the role.
And a request to Sir Ken please do not re-make any more!
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
First time I laughed out loud in a long time!!
I started Schitts Creek at the start of pandemic but I could not get into it after a few episodes as my head was full of doom and gloom etc
A few months ago over a year into the pandemic I decided to try again and I really got into it. I loved all the characters but Moira is my favourite, the wigs the makeup and outfits and her accent just set the scene for someone who lives in another world but still keeps it up when hit with reality of losing all their money and the lifestyle.
I loved the romance with David and Patrick and how Alexis try's to make a life for herself there too abs the sibling rivalry.
I was gutted to reach the final episode today but I am going to watch it again soon.
Well done David and Eugene and all the cast - this was a rare treat that I really loved during these difficult times.
Shrill (2019)
Not what I expected - really quite good
As a 40 something when I was in my 20s the go to show for single women was SATC. It was amazing and a bit of escapism but never our reality.
Now 20 somethings are able to watch more real life shows like Shrill and Girls.
I enjoyed it and really liked the main character Annie and her best friend Fran - if only when I'd been that age it would've been great if not everyone on tv was stick thin so I think it great young girls can have these role models.
I did think her relationships are quite real too and the difficulties of that in the modern world.
I really enjoyed the ending too but felt the show did have a few stereotype characters.
Hopefully we will see more of these 2 great actors in future.
Pan Am (2011)
Wonderfully nostalgic
I discovered this on Amazon recently and I loved it. I'm obsessed with anything 1960s and this series ticked the boxes of a trip to that time period.
I found the characters interesting and a great plot. My only disappointment was it was cut short and only 14 episode.
If you looking for some 60s nostalgia set in the glamorous world of airlines I would recommend.
Out of Her Mind (2020)
Overhyped
Oh dear - I like Sara Pascoe on panel shows so I thought this would be good.
I managed 10 minutes and found it total rubbish and not funny. Maybe I'm not the right age group for this type of program (mid 40s) but I thought I might be able to relate to the female character. I think it has been advertised too much and I defo wouldn't recommend. Sorry Sarah.
Miss Scarlet & the Duke (2020)
Brilliant Show
I stumbled across this show whilst looking for something to watch. I wasn't familiar with the actors playing the main characters but I thought they were great. It had a really interesting story and beautiful Dublin backdrop posing as Victorian London.
My only criticism is not enough episodes - I do hope there are more in the pipeline.
Great show and would recommend it to anyone who likes period crime drama.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Great movie but disappointing ending
Having watched this for the 2nd time at home this week there was a lot of detail I missed from seeing it at the cinema. It was certainly more of the Star Wars genre than ep8 and gave a better take on the story. However I just didn't get the ending. Why would she choose skywalker? And where was Ben or Anakin force ghosts?
I have now read that different endings were planned and filmed where Ben would've lived which would've been much better in the story.
Adam driver and Ian mcdiarmid gave outstanding performances and I thought the way Carrie fisher was included as Princess Leia was seamless and a great tribute to her.
I am looking forward to more from Star Wars which might make more sense of this ending .
Little Women (2019)
Beautiful Film
Having read the book as a child I've always loved the story of the March sisters.
This film does not disappoint although it seemed to be in a different timeline order to the book with going back and forward to the past. There were very strong messages to inspire young women as with the original book. I thought it looked stunning and the cast were all very good especially those playing Jo and Amy. I would definitely watch it again. I have only seen the 1994 version once so can't quite recall it to compare.
As the book inspired me as a young girl to try and make my own way in the world without the need to be married I believe those messages are still relevant today 35 years later.
Murder Mystery (2019)
Lighthearted Murder Mystery
This was an enjoyable film that was lighthearted and reminded me of Murder She Wrote the classic tv series.
It's not a serious drama but a bit of fun and set in beautiful locations. If you'd like an escape to the Med for a couple of hours with some well known actors and a lighthearted comedy then it is a must see.
What We Do in the Shadows (2019)
Brilliant
Having watched the original film I couldn't wait to see this tv series and it didn't disappoint. The 3 vampires are brilliant and Guillermo also is a stand out character. If you like dark comedy and vampires it is a win win. Sunday nights won't be the same now it's finished.
Russian Doll (2019)
Brilliant funny and compelling drama
This was the best show I've seen this year! Brilliant story and great acting. It was Groundhog Day for adults with lots of twists and turns. I wasnt familiar with the 2 main actors but they were amazing. Can't recommend this enough. Only rubbish part was when I'd finished it. Hopefully a series 2 will be made.
Mary Queen of Scots (2018)
Oh dear
I'm afraid I didnt even get past the trailer to see this film!! I think saoirse Ronan is an amazing actress but we cannot always assume an Irish actress can do a Scottish accent. I am afraid she cannot however MQS historically would speak French. In Scottish schools she is taught as a heroine and I am worried this is not portrayed in this way. Like Mel Gibson badly depicting another Scottish hero I will not be watching this film to find out. I am so annoyed with Hollywood that they cast anyone in Scottish parts. Maybe it's tims they cast a Scottish person in the main part!!
