Once again, I led myself to be deceived by the ratings and comments on IMDB. Besides the fact that both Nicole Kidman and Antonia Banderas featured here. Both these actors played their roles well, but the script of this movie gave them nothing to work with. You can paint lipstick on a pig, but it remains a pig. I don't even know how to classify this movie. Erotic thriller ? No thrills and no erotic neither. I must say that it was one of the biggest disappointments in a long time. Sometimes I watch a movie without expecting too much. Small budget, unknown actors, a crappy story etc, but on the odd occasion I get a pleasant surprise. I do read the IMDB comments but found that they are equally untrustworthy. I only gave this movie a 1 star. It probably does deserve a little better, but I feel the need to offset the, in my opinion, much to high 6.2 rating.
For once, the glowing reviews were spot on. The first part of the movie was just plainly boring, but once the story picked up pace, boy did it become entertaining. I am certainly going to rewatch in the near future. The classification comedy, drama, romance is spot on. No gratuitous violence, no really provocative sex scenes, although the latter is highly represented in the first half. Maybe a bit much of swearing, but I didn't consider it offensive. Sometimes it is good not knowing what to expect, as the surprise can be very gratifying. I gave this movie a straight forward 10 as it was outstanding and refreshing compared to the rubbish I have watched lately.
I suppose that good is a bit simplistic, but it describes what I thought of the movie. Never ever heard from it and being from 1990 already rather aged. In the beginning I was close to stop watching. Too many unrealistic and improbable actions. I can't go into details because that would give away too much (spoiler alert). Going into the second half, however, things became more interesting. I came away pleased with sitting it through. Someone remarked that there was a hidden feminist angle, which I can't agree on. Definitely, the movie took a swipe on fanatical and bigoted religious beliefs. I found it entertaining and thought-provoking.
