Angmapansa (2021)
Great Drama with some...questionable tropes
It's a very interesting drama. Like most Korean Dramas it can drag at certain points but always ends the episode making you want to keep watching. My only real complaint is the very obvious queer-baiting beginning in episode 1. And up until episode 12 there's this "will they won't they" between the two male leads. Could've done without this especially because one of them is supposed to resemble the others deceased brother. Even with that knowledge, it still felt at times like they were attracted to one another sexually.
This kind of trope is often included in dramas to get the queer audience invested. Other than that I can't complain too much. Acting is over the top as expected, even comical at times. If you are a fan of slow burns as well as Korean shows, this one is most definitely well worth the watch.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Almost a masterpiece
Great rendition of this Disney classic.
Much like Disney's Cinderella starring Brandy, they went with casting whoever they wanted to for the roles and I think it went really well.
Halle's performance in the movie was top notch and she told a story like no other has during Part of Your World. Her voice fit more than the Jodi Benson version only because Jodi's voice sounded more mature whereas Halle's voice sounded very young and it fit.
The other supporting characters did a good job in the acting portions their vocals during the singing could've used some work.
The only reason this movie doesn't get a perfect 10 is because sometimes the CGI was a little questionable, the supporting casts vocals, and the movie was a little long clocking in at 2.5 hours.
The packed theatre of children loved it and I was right there with them enjoying it. Bravo Disney.
Discreet (2017)
'Discreet' should've remained hidden behind a blank Grindr profile..nobody asked for this
Alex returns to his home town after many years away to discover that the man who abused him as a child is still alive. What follows is a weird, disheveled, and quite unorganized group of scenes that together is supposed to make a coherent movie but instead makes you wonder how the writer was able to convince anyone to sign on to this project. He wants revenge, but then takes quite a long time to enact this revenge. He becomes obsessed with a teenage boy going so far as to break into his home and inhale his presumably dirty underwear and stalking him inside of his home (btw where are his parents?). So now he, a grown man, victim of kidnapping and sexual assault as a kid, is now victimizing a teenage boy. Btw you never find out what happened when the boy found him in his home, it just goes to the next scene. Is the boy ok? Along the way he's stopping off at an adult video store, luring discreet older men to hotel rooms and robbing them, and arguably the most confusing part of this film is his obsession with listening to right wing media on the radio. I mean he's a thief and a creep, why not throw bigot on top of that too. There are several random scenes of an unknown corpse being wrapped in black plastic, zip tied and tossed in a river to float. It doesn't appear to be difficult to find as the lighting gives off the impression that its not too far into the woods and if the last scene is any indication...its right by a highly trafficked bridge. Then there's Mandy and her ASMR randomly juxtaposed in the film that are painful on the ears. I can't for the life of me understand what this movie is meant to be. What was I supposed to learn from this film? I was an hour and 6 minutes into this hour and 19 minute film and I had no idea what the actual plot of this film was.
A complete waste of my time and I wish I had never watched it. If I can protect others from seeing this film with this review then I've done my due diligence and public service for the new year.
Everything Is Free (2017)
I guess the concept is worth a star??
For something that had a good concept going in it just made all the wrong steps from start to finish. The best friends character makes no sense. How was he best friends with the guy for so long but homophobic? I can understand a homophobic person being a casual acquaintances with a queer person because they are kept a distance most of the time. But someone who's homophobic enough to not be willing to have his brother be gay wouldnt CHOOSE a best friend that's openly gay. It makes no sense. Then there's the little brother who is even more unlikable than our best friend. He used amd manipulated the main character the entire movie. He didn't get a redemption arc and just gets his happy ending? And speaking of the ending...it was the WORST ending this film could've had. I'm sorry but in his speech he said they made him feel like he deserved to die...and you forgive himself? You mean after 2 years, you're still not over a guy you hooked up with a few times over the course of a couple weeks?
There was no chemistry or tension that would make us as an audience feel a connection to their trysts. Also, our main character threatens to kill himself when ol boy doesn't want to talk to him? Gross.
The main character was saying and doing all the right things at the ending interaction but somehow still gave in?
Here I was hoping I'd be watching a gay film with a good ending for once and we are left with this...
Wish I could give less than 0 stars.
This movie could've been something but instead it took us om a long trip to nowhere.
Hawaii (2013)
A bit slow, but enjoyable
So there was alot wrong with the film. The music in the beginning that lasted for 10 minutes until the title screen, and then after the title screen...the music came back. There was alot of unnecessary music and underscore but because there was so few dialogue spoken they had to fill the silence with something.
This movie is a very slow burn. I expected that it would take a while before they both realized they were attracted to one another, but it all took too long. 1hr45min. I expected 40ish minutes to discover the attraction and then the rest of the film to show the growth of the relationship. All the buildup for a kiss...it left me with a sense of blueballs so to speak. I expected more. With that being said I still enjoyed the film. And it had a happy ending which is very rare in gay films that aren't comedies.
Watch it or don't watch it. It's not cinematic masterpiece so you can go your entire life without seeing it and not regret it. But again, I enjoyed the film.
Bad Is Bad (2011)
I mean, it had promise
The Concept of the film is good, two unlikely hit(men/boys?), one a badass and the other a nerdy weirdo, run into the former's father while out on a job... then he proceeds to make him relive the assault and also dish out his own version of revenge.
Could've been a good movie if it had better acting, a bigger budget, and a real director.
Cut Snake (2014)
Great film
After watching some terrible gay films and wanting more than just a drama. This film was a breath of fresh air. The acting of the main character was amazing. The chemistry between the male leads was great. While I did not like the way the film ended (it always seems like no matter what, all gay films have to have a tragic or sad ending) I will accept it because the movie was great. Coupled with the fact that the film is set in the 70s I'll allow the internalised homophobia and the fact that he clearly still loved the man and wanted to be with, slide this time.
Despite what other reviewers might say, gay people will love this film.
Un rubio (2019)
Superb acting
Awesome movie. Really enjoyed it. Great acting, great chemistry between the main characters.
The only negative I really have is that much like the overwhelming majority of gay films, it just gives off the impression that we can't be in happy, successful, and non-toxic relationships. It always ends badly.
But otherwise a really great film
bwoy (2016)
Good looking supporting lead...that's all
Nothing about this is realistic besides the fact that people try to scam gullible Americans. This man bought a gun and flew down to Jamaica just to see a man and try to kill another ugh... I can't believe what I watched...
I'm just glad it didn't take the racist tone I expected it to take.
Still a pretty bad movie though. Not sure if I watched it to it's conclusion to see a naked Yenny or to see how dumb Anthony Rapps character was.
Mario (2018)
Wow...
What a really emotionally engrossing film. The chemistry between the lead actors is phenomenal and I found myself falling in love with them as they fell in love. The acting is superb. The only reason I'm not giving it a 10 star rating is because I'm so sick of all gay films ending in the same way. Let the film industry tell it, and there's no way gay people can actually be happy unless it's in a comedy filled with negative gay stereotypes and almost parodies actual relationships. This film deserved a better ending. Why couldn't he just look out into the crowd and see him there...I would've accepted that ending...not this one....ugh...
Still worth a watch I guess.
Jahr des Tigers (2017)
An ok film
The lack of much dialogue makes the film kind of drag on . I see what the writer was going for but, the idea that someone can be stalking you for weeks, breaking into your home, eating your food, stealing your clothes, and even driving you out of town only for you to end up having sex with him upon confrontation is extremely far fetched. In reality the stalker isn't that cute and the victim is absolutely gorgeous. Not saying relationships like that don't work because they can/do but to have it start out as a stalker-relationship? Nah that makes it even more unbelievable. Overall the film was meh to watch. I found myself hoping the stalker would get caught and out in jail...not end up with the guy.
But if you're into the stalker type film with a good-looking supporting actor and some random weird nude scenes. Then this is the film for you
Yo soy la felicidad de este mundo (2014)
Nudity does not save this film
Everything about it is confusing and quite angering. How do you, a hustler, invite someone else to the house of your significant other then proceed to have sex with them while your partner is still in ge house. Then you question why he tells you to make him leave?
Not to mention how do you allow someone to bring another lover into your bedroom and not lose your mind and overreact. I'm sorry I guess I just don't understand why gay men can never be depicted as happy in films?
Like what did we really do to always deserve misery?
Ander (2009)
It's not...awful?
Very slow paced. I got some of the characters mixed up because none of them really have their own personalities. Another unrealistic depiction of gay sex but I'm used to that in films.
The fact that he spit in old boys face because he can't accept his own sexuality was abhorrent. Ugh. I've seen much better foreign gay films that I would recommend all of those before watching his one
Grinder (2016)
Don't bother
Too many long close ups. The main character is 16 and his extremely attractive modelling agent is hitting on him? Doesn't make sense to me. The photographer swears he's straight to his gay best friend who he spent months sleeping with. Then proceeds to get barebacked by a random guy in a bar bathroom...
So is he just not attracted to his friend anymore? Because that makes much more sense than to screw some random guy.
Anyway I wouldn't bother, only giving it a 3 because there were some attractive guys
I should've watched the whole film first...1 star
