Frost Caves

Frost Caves are optional dungeons in Valheim found within the Mountains biome. They pose a significant challenge if you come unprepared, but hold some nice bits of loot including Fenris Hair, Fenris Claws and unique enemy types like Cultists and Ulvs.

Here's everything you need to know about these frozen dungeons.

Play

Entering the Cave

To find Frost Caves, look out for entrances like the one below. You can usually find them high up on mountains, but they can be a rare sight.

Frost Caves have big icicles hanging over the entrance. Before you enter, you'll want to make sure you have solid weapons and armour. Iron-tier or better is recommended.

Traversing the Caves

Frost Caves can be precarious due to how they're structured. You'll come across big drops which can be navigated by sticking close to narrow paths on the walls.

You will also need to smash your way through icy walls to progress through certain parts of the cave. This can be done with any weapon.

Watch out for icicles from the ceiling! These icicles deal damage to anything they land on, just like falling trees. If you've ever been bonked by a tree you chopped down you'll know how deadly this can be, so be careful not to knock them down!

One enemy you'll find in Frost Caves is the Bat, which will mob you in a big group. They don't do very much damage but they can be annoying to hit.

More challenging are the Cultists and Ulvs. Cultists lurk within their lairs behind wooden doors. They breathe fire, so Fire Resistance Wine might be handy. It's possible that these werewolf-like creatures were once human, but turned into wolf creatures as a result of their dedication to Fenrir.

Ulvs are aggressive creatures similar to Cultists or Fenrings, but they walk on all-fours. They aren't particularly strong alone but can pose a threat in groups.

Rarely, you might stumble across a Stone Golem in a Frost Cave. As always, these behemoths pose a huge threat and deal massive damage. Stone Golems resist piercing and slashing weapons, but they're weak to Pickaxes.

Frost Cave Secrets

Of course, there's more to the Frost Caves than just enemies. One thing you can find within them is a Vegvisir to register Moder's position on your map.

You can also find a variety of items in Frost Caves. These include Crystals, Red Jute, Fenris Hair, Fenris Claws, Coins and other valuables. Fenris Hair is needed to craft the Fenris armour set, and Fenris Claws are needed for the Flesh Rippers weapon.

Crystals are found on the walls, and have a distinctive look that should make them easy to find. In the Cultist's lair you can find altars surrounded by Fenris Claws and other items. Meat Piles can be broken to get Entrails. Fenris Hair is also hanging from the wall, and you can chop it down to get more.

Very rarely, Frost Caves will have a lake in them which is inhabitated by a unique fish, Tetra. To catch Tetra, you need Cold Fishing Bait, which is made in a Cauldron using a Tuna and an Ulv Trophy. Tuna can be caught in the water around the Meadows or Black Forest with normal bait.
