A crew of ‘expendable’ workers is sent out to colonize the ice planet of Niflheim. The task is a borderline suicide mission being handled by disposable employees who die and are regenerated with their memories to try again. When one expendable is presumed dead, his new clone arrives ready to begin. But when the previous iteration refuses to make way for his new clone there are consequences for the mission and the whole system at large.

However, the film goes deeper than a multitude of Pattinson's, boasting director Bong Joon Ho's signature style of dark humor and offering intriguing social commentary on what it means to be human. The only caveat is that Mickey 17 doesn't go as deep as its rich clone premise allows. However, it's the perfect choice if you're looking for a sci-fi film with a little more depth, weirdness, and dark humor than the average streaming pick.

Plus, I absolutely love Toni Collette in this movie, who shines in her villainous supporting role. For a fun and funky sci-fi movie that’s got a good dose of weight behind it, check out Mickey 17.

Mickey 17 is a science fiction movie written and directed by the decorated South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, director of Snowpiercer, Okja, and Parasite. The prolific and acclaimed Iranian-French cinematographer Darius Khondji marks his second collaboration with Bong Joon-ho on the movie. The pair worked on Okja together and Khondji is responsible for the visual style of movies such as Bardo, Amour, and Uncut Gems.
Adding to the creative force behind Mickey 17 is Jung Jae-il who composes the score, having teamed up with Bong Joon-ho for the Oscar-winning black comedy thriller Parasite.
The movie is based on the science fiction novel Mickey7. The novel was released in 2022 and is written by Edward Ashton. A sequel titled Antimatter Blues was released in March 2023. Ashton confirmed that director Bong Joon-ho adapts the source material loosely and changes a lot about the book, though he also praised the director as a genius.
In the lead role as Mickey Barnes is Robert Pattinson. The English actor has gained critical acclaim for performances in movies such as The Lighthouse and High Life. Meanwhile, he has solidified his reputation as a commercial success with leading roles in Tenet and The Batman. He plays alongside Naomi Ackie, portraying the character Nasha. Ackie won plaudits for her portrayal of Whitney Houston in the biopic musical Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. The character Berto is portrayed by the award-winning South Korean-American actor Steven Yeun. Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Alif Satar round out the cast.
