Feedback can be scary. Constructive feedback centers on a relationship. On day one, managers and employees must work to understand each other, explain their communication styles, and set expectations for giving and receiving feedback. Always ask, "Can this person take action based on my feedback with results that drive the business forward?" If no real change can be made, it isn't feedback; it's an opinion. Next, ask yourself, "Is my feedback centering my comfort over theirs?" Often, people give critique to make themselves more comfortable. For example, saying you speak too directly. The reality is that you are uncomfortable with direct truth. Feedback goes both ways. It should always be grounded in truth and fairness.
