You've lost trust with a C-suite client. How can you rebuild the relationship after a misunderstanding?

As a coach if you've lost trust then I don't suggest being their coach until it's rebuilt. A coaching relationship is meaningless without trust. Take a step back, rebuild that trust over time, follow-up and through on agreements, think ahead and show thoughtfulness, and ask for regular transparent and direct feedback. As a coach you cannot have an ego and lean into the client relationship.

Rebuilding trust after a misunderstanding requires patience and strategic communication. You can begin by acknowledging the issue as clearly as possible without placing blame. Work to understand their perspective by actively listening and asking clarifying questions. Offer a sincere apology and outline the steps you're taking to prevent future issues. Consistently follow up with updates and demonstrate your commitment to resolving the matter. These actions can mend the relationship and strengthen it by showcasing your accountability and dedication. It's important to remember that trust is not gained overnight; it's rebuilt one conversation at a time. However, if these efforts yield no progress, it may be time to end the relationship.

Talk through the situation with candor and kindness. You may be able to resolve the situation and repair the relationship. If that does not resolve the issues, then perhaps termination of the coaching relationship is best for both client and coach.

Think of trust as the main currency for the coaching relationship. You need to make at least a few deposits until you withdraw. Here's a story with a startup founder client of mine. My client was preparing to raise their next investment round. They had asked me to review their investor documents and I left feedback for them. They interpreted my constructive feedback as "I don't believe in you or your business!" and it wasn't until we talked openly about the feedback in our next coaching call that I was able to communicate my true intention of "I am being direct with my feedback so that you have the best chance of persuading investors to choose you." We aren't mindreaders. When you think there may be a misunderstanding. Talk about it.
