Over 85% of the world’s landmass has zero broadband coverage. More than 300 million people are completely stranded in broadband deserts, and 42% of rural communities remain underserved. How do we solve this? We don't do it by building more towers where they can't physically go. We do it by connecting standard consumer devices, especially the 80+% of devices that do not have cellular connectivity, directly to the sky—over Wi-Fi. This is why the latest move by the FCC is a historic, game-changing pivot. A massive thank you to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr for his bold leadership in launching a proceeding to open up more than 225 MHz of unlicensed spectrum for satellite Direct-to-Device (D2D) communications. He captured the opportunity perfectly: “Coupling [direct-to-device] with the innovation hotbed that is our unlicensed wireless device ecosystem could be a game changer.” For decades, unlicensed spectrum has been the invisible engine of our indoor lives. Extending this incredibly mature framework to Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) creates a beautiful, complementary indoor-outdoor handshake. It means we can deploy open, scalable, and power-efficient space-based Wi-Fi to blanket those "dead zones" and establish a true fabric of intelligent things. This forward-looking regulatory runway is exactly what the industry needs to design next-generation silicon.
