A man with autism who worked voluntarily for four years at Waitrose has lost his job after his mum asked if he could be paid. Tom Boyd, 27, stacked shelves and emptied stock cages at a branch of the supermarket chain in Cheadle Hulme, Greater Manchester, while being accompanied by a support worker. He began back in 2021 and has now racked up more than 600 hours of the volunteer work. He would work two days a week from 9.30am until 2pm and got on well with other members of staff who appreciated his effort with comments like “you work harder than some people who are paid to work here”. Tonight The Mirror will be celebrating our brilliant unsung heroes at our amazing Pride of Britain Awards. The Pride of Britain Awards are an annual event that honours "unsung heroes" from across the United Kingdom who have shown bravery, courage, or have made a significant difference in their communities. Hosted by Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo, the 26th awards will be a star-studded affair. But as always the real stars of the show are the extraordinary winners, who represent the very best of everything British. Nominated by the public, the recipients are ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds whose actions are deemed extraordinary and inspiring. The awards celebrate achievements like overcoming adversity, performing extraordinary acts of kindness, and displaying immense courage. And you can be part of it, too, because on Thursday, at 8pm, ITV will be screening a two-hour extravaganza from the awards. Read all about our winners' stories: https://lnkd.in/eeWvQyGM
