An agency of the European Union
About us
EU Agency The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) was established in 2005. It is an EU agency which aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. It is seated in Stockholm, Sweden. Our Mission: To identify, assess and communicate current and emerging threats to human health posed by communicable diseases. Further to this, the ECDC works to provide timely information to the European Commission, the Member States, Community agencies and international organisations active within the field of public health. In order to achieve this mission, ECDC works in partnership with national health protection bodies across Europe to strengthen and develop continent-wide disease surveillance and early warning systems. By working with experts throughout Europe, ECDC pools Europe's health knowledge to develop authoritative scientific opinions about the risks posed by current and emerging infectious diseases. How can we plan for emergencies when there are so many possible threats and priorities? Today we discussed this very question at #GHS2026, with representatives from Africa CDC, Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Thanks to Kamara Neema, Giorgia Soldà and Marsha Taylor, who discussed the wide ranging positive impacts that threat prioritisation exercises can have, from informing #preparedness planning to guiding surveillance and stockpiling strategies. We may not be able to predict the precise timing or location of the next #pandemic or #epidemic, but through soliciting expert opinion we can at least begin to peek around the corner. A best guess is better than no guess at all.

⚕️ European doctors at the heart of public health Our President, Dr Ole Johan Bakke, discussed our ongoing collaboration with Pamela Rendi-Wagner, MD, MSc, Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), including: 🔹 The potential to improve online communications between doctors on the ground, public heath and others, and national public health authorities during outbreaks and other health issues. This must also be implemented into the Electronic Health Records of public health physicians and part of the solutions within the the #EHDS. 🔹 The participation of doctors in crisis preparedness and management must be assured at all levels, for all kinds of crises, including outbreaks of infectious diseases. 🔹 The role of competence and capacity in primary care cannot be overestimated when tackling the challenge of antimicrobial resistance. 🔹 ECDC and CPME will collaborate more closely on the upskilling of doctors. Dissemination of ECDC’s publications and training materials is an important part of this.

🔵The publication of the first Public Health Emergency Preparedness Assessments (PHEPA) Interim Report marks an important milestone in strengthening health security across the #EU. Developed by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) with the support of DG HERA, the report brings together findings from the first 15 assessments and identifies common strengths, challenges and opportunities for improvement across key preparedness capacities. DG HERA contributed the medical countermeasures #preparedness component, covering areas such as strategic #stockpiling, supply chain monitoring, manufacturing capacity and access to critical medical countermeasures during public health emergencies. Preparedness starts long before a crisis. By identifying gaps, sharing good practices and learning from each other, we can build stronger, more resilient health systems across Europe. We are proud to support #ECDC and Member States to strengthen preparedness and ensure #Europe is better equipped to respond to future health threats. 👉🔗 https://lnkd.in/eSJwHUDk

Thirteen organisations. Five years. One shared goal. The European Climate and Health Observatory partners met in Stockholm this week to celebrate what the partnership has built — and to plan what comes next. 🎉 On 9–10 June, Observatory partners came together in Stockholm, kindly hosted by European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), to celebrate this special milestone and set the course for the work ahead. Since its launch in 2021, the Observatory has grown into a strong and dynamic partnership, jointly managed by the EEA and the European Commission, helping Europe respond to the growing health impacts of climate change. Over these five years, the partnership has achieved so much together, including: 📚 building a trusted knowledge platform with analysis, data and tools that support policy action at European, national and subnational levels. 💡 promoting evidence-based solutions that help strengthen public health systems and protect communities across Europe. 🤝 growing the partnership to include 13 European and international organisations working together across climate, health, environmental policy and research. The partners meeting was not only a moment to celebrate these achievements, but also an opportunity to shape the next two-year Observatory workplan and further strengthen collaboration within the partnership. The partners agreed to scale up efforts on knowledge creation, data collection, and capacity building and to explore new ways of transforming knowledge into action by European policy makers and public health authorities. ✨ Five years on, the partnership is stronger than ever — and we’re excited for what comes next as we continue working together for a healthier, more resilient Europe.
