Sovereign and secure communications for governments, from the creators of Matrix.
About us
Element is a new type of communications platform. It combines consumer messaging apps, collaboration tools and video conferencing to replace email, address shadow IT and improve security. Of most importance, Element offers sovereign, secure and interoperable communications - all based on the Matrix open standard. Sovereign The end-user organisation retains complete ownership and control of the entire platform and all the data it contains, enhancing privacy and protecting against vendor lock-in. Secure The entire Element platform, and the decentralised Matrix open standard, is end-to-end encrypted by default. Operating across a decentralised network, Element provides resilient communications in the toughest of environments. Interoperable The Matrix open standard ensures Element deployments can federate with partner organisations to support sovereign and secure real time communications between multiple organisations. How Element works for organisations Element can be self-hosted, or delivered as a fully-managed solution directly from Element or one of our many hosting partners. Element is the flagship app for Matrix-based communications, and is available to everyone free of charge. Designed by the creators of Matrix and the FOSS Synapse homeserver, Element Server Suite is a professionalised backend that delivers outstanding performance. It includes enterprise-grade features such as powerful admin control, advanced identification and access management, auditing and compliance. Who uses Element? Customers include NATO ACT (using NI2CE Messenger, an Element fork), United Nations, US Department of Defence, the French government (Tchap, an Element fork) and Germany's Armed Forces (BwMessenger, an Element fork). The importance of open source Element (and the Matrix open standard in which it is built) is committed to open source. Being open source ensures transparency, improves security and drives innovation by creating a healthy and competitive ecosystem.

Who controls your communications - you, or your vendor? Digital sovereignty is widely discussed, but the importance of interoperability in real time communications is often overlooked. ❌️ Relying on a single vendor is the vulnerability, wherever it's headquartered. 👉️ Digital sovereignty demands choice, and it needs an interoperable open standard. Download our study that covers what genuine sovereignty for real time communications looks like, and our checklist to assess where your organisation stands today: https://lnkd.in/ebvJkZDS

We're interoperable, so you can be sovereign. Digitally sovereign communications require open standards and interoperability: the freedom to pick and mix backend components, and the ability for separate deployments to federate and communicate on your terms. That's why we build on Matrix - the decentralised open standard no single vendor can own, control or shut down. https://lnkd.in/eayNNq77

Last week our CEO Matthew Hodgson joined a panel on responsible public-open-source partnerships, alongside voices from the Dutch government's OSPO and the new Digital Commons EDIC. The Matrix open standard ensures choice for governments' real time communications. It's an independently managed open standard that no single vendor, cloud, or government can hold hostage. Element is proud to contribute heavily to Matrix, helping maintain and develop that standard. We also offer an enterprise-grade solution built on top of the Matrix open standard, designed specifically for governments, defence and public sector use. Being a good citizen of the digital commons means more than adopting open source. It means contributing back to it. We hold ourselves to that, and hope that others using and building on Matrix make that same commitment. Thank you to APELL for convening this conversation, and to everyone in the room pushing Europe's open source ecosystem toward real, delivered sovereignty. Thank you to Koen de Jonge for the picture. 💚

Fantastic to see T-Systems International delivering TI-Messenger compliant communications to hospitals, clinics and pharmacies across Germany. Our multi-tenant Element Server Suite Pro provides the robust, performant server infrastructure that enables T-Systems to offer a reliable, cost-effective service for small and mid-size healthcare deployments. ESS Pro has been independently pentested in work commissioned by gematik GmbH.
👇 #SmartHealthforBetterCare #OneHealthTeam #WeWontStop

🇫🇷 We had a great time at Salon Souveraineté Numérique - thank you to everyone who stopped by to talk digital sovereignty with us. It was wonderful to see Marine Tondelier stop by our stand to learn more about how Element and Matrix power Direction interministérielle du numérique (DINUM)'s LaSuite and Tchap - and how 800,000+ public sector servants have recently migrated smoothly from 'Element Classic' to our next-gen 'Element X'. See you next year! 👋

Wonderful to see Direction interministérielle du numérique (DINUM)'s Tchap and LaSuite migrate smoothly from 'Element Classic' to our next gen Element X (building on the matrix-rust-sdk by Element). By migrating to Element X, Tchap's 800K end-users now benefit from faster performance and next-gen secure authentication. It's a fabulous proof point of the vibrant Matrix ecosystem, and the importance of upstream vendors that continue to invest in the maintenance and development of both the underlying protocol and flagship apps built on it.

Element CEO Matthew Hodgson is on stage at APELL Conference today, giving an update on the adoption of the Matrix open standard (The Matrix.org Foundation) across the EU. He's highlighting Matrix to demonstrate the importance of interoperability in achieving digital sovereignty. Unless there's choice, there's no sovereignty.

🇫🇷 Amandine Le Pape on stage at Salon Souveraineté Numérique. She joined a panel together with Anne-Marie Calmeil (T-Systems France), Nouamane Cherkaoui (BPCE Solutions informatiques) and Boris Lecoeur (Qwant) to discuss "Digital Europe: How do we break the chains of technological dependency?" Digital sovereignty is the theme of the event - and we believe it needs an interoperable open standard to work.
