Restaurant chain TGI Fridays is experiencing a severe case of the Mondays. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week, the chain is now contending with the expensive possibility of customers trying to redeem $49.7 million of gift cards that never expire. https://lnkd.in/evEWeybR The cards are a liability for the company trying to sell itself out of bankruptcy and likely unable to foot the bill for eight-figures worth of gift certificates—some of which date back to 2003, according to court filings. It looks like Sam Altman just acquired a four letter URL worth more than $15 million. On Wednesday, the OpenAI CEO ominously tweeted a simple URL, chat.com, which is now the new home of his company’s flagship AI tool, ChatGPT. The new URL was previously owned by Dharmesh Shah, the cofounder of CRM platform HubSpot, who wrote on LinkedIn in 2023 that he paid an “8 figure sum” for it. https://lnkd.in/guR5qY5R

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is demanding employees come into the office five days a week, but it’s not because he secretly wants them to quit, he said. https://lnkd.in/e52Gu4sG Jassy announced the company’s strict return-to-office mandate in a September memo, sparking immediate outrage from employees, some of which had been working at least two days remotely per week since May 2023. Some experts have theorized that Jassy’s RTO plan could be a sneaky way of reducing the company’s headcount, rather than go through the formal process of conducting layoffs. Yet, in an all-hands meeting Tuesday, Jassy denied claims that the RTO plan was a “backdoor layoff” or that the company had reached some agreement with city leaders.
