Fermilab is building a new linear accelerator! In this video, take a behind the scenes look inside the tunnel that will house the new 800-million-electronvolt linac. The Proton Improvement Plan-II is an essential enhancement to the Fermilab accelerator complex, powering the world’s most intense high-energy neutrino beam on its journey from Illinois to the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment in South Dakota. DUNE scientists will use neutrinos to answer some of the most profound questions about our universe. In addition, over the next 50 years, PIP-II will drive a broad physics research program, delivering scientific breakthroughs and likely to reveal surprising answers to questions that are not yet contemplated.

Earlier this month, the Mu2e collaboration moved the experiment's calorimeter into the Mu2e Hall! Physicists will use Mu2e to search for the never-observed direct conversion of a muon into an electron, a process predicted by theories beyond the Standard Model. The calorimeter is a subdetector of the Mu2e experiment that will help scientists to confirm that a candidate signal is indeed an electron if a muon-to-electron conversion happens.

In the near future, astronomers will have a new tool to help them spot a nearby supernova: the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. Researchers working on DUNE are actively developing algorithms aimed at quickly sorting through millions of recorded particle interactions and saving only the most interesting for physics. These trigger algorithms will enable researchers in DUNE to quickly identify signs of a nearby supernova and send out an alert. The alert will be sent to astronomers worldwide, who could then orient their telescopes in time to capture the light as it catches up to the neutrinos. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d4_vbmNF
