4.4 billion flight prices. 22,300 tasks. 7,000 concurrent executions. One day of dev time. That's what the data science team at Hopper achieved when they built a Deep Zoom visualization of global flight pricing data on Union.ai. The challenge: process billions of trip records and reorganize them into an interactive map, where every single pixel represents a real flight itinerary price. Hopper's Chief Data Scientist Patrick Surry had tried Ray first, but hit deadlocking issues that were difficult to diagnose. With Union.ai, he implemented the entire distributed shuffle algorithm in pure async Python. In his words: "I can just write async Python, and it's going to run on multiple containers instead of threads on my one machine. I'm like, wow, that's kind of amazing." The algorithm scaled from 1M test trips to 4.4B production records without a single code change. And that 4.4B dataset is just 1% of one week's data at Hopper.
